Economic And Spatial Impacts Of A Wildlife Habitat Policy On Forest Management, Karin N. Bothwell Aug 2017

Economic And Spatial Impacts Of A Wildlife Habitat Policy On Forest Management, Karin N. Bothwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Regulations protecting habitat of forest-dwelling species often impact forest management practices. Those impacts may be mutually beneficial to both wildlife and forestry or they may lead to unanticipated negative outcomes, such as an associated economic cost compared to management free from habitat regulations. One example of a regulation that impacts forest management is the zoning of winter habitat of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Maine, where deer abundance has been consistently below socially desired levels in most areas of the State since the 1970s due in part to the heavy toll of severe winter weather. To mitigate winter-related mortality, the …

Herbivory Impacts On Growth And Survival Of Seedlings In Bottomland Hardwood Forest Restoration Sites In The Post Oak Savannah And Blackland Prairie Ecoregions Of Texas, Usa, Ryan J. Jacques May 2017

Herbivory Impacts On Growth And Survival Of Seedlings In Bottomland Hardwood Forest Restoration Sites In The Post Oak Savannah And Blackland Prairie Ecoregions Of Texas, Usa, Ryan J. Jacques

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in bottomland hardwood forests (BLHW) ecology and restoration has increased over the past 40 years. These communities aid in water quality improvement, streambank stabilization, and urban expansion mitigation. They also provide important habitat for many species of wildlife. Since the majority of remaining BLHW are degraded due to land fragmentation, restoration attempts are becoming commonplace within the Western Gulf Coastal Plain. However, restoration success has been mixed, with managers observing survival rates of <15% for desirable species due to various factors. Over two growing seasons, I investigated multiple factors that have potential to limit BLHW restoration success in East Texas. Specifically, I tested the impacts of herbivory by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and feral swine (Sus scrofa) on Nuttall oak (Quercus texana Buckley), Shumard oak (Q. shumardii Buckley), bur oak ( …

An Evaluation Of Deer And Pronghorn Surveys In South Dakota, Kristopher W. Cudmore Jan 2017

An Evaluation Of Deer And Pronghorn Surveys In South Dakota, Kristopher W. Cudmore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To properly manage white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and the American pronghorn antelope (Antilocapridae americana), wildlife managers must identify population perimeters, sample size, age and sex ratios of these three species. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate age and sex ratios and determine a minimum sample size for each study area for all deer species and pronghorn, in addition to deriving a methodology and population estimate for white-tailed deer in the Black Hills. Sample size needed for both species of deer and pronghorn ranged from 60-70 groups of does. Age ratios calculated from daylight …
