Spring Phytoplankton Photosynthesis, Growth, And Primary Production And Relationships To A Recurrent Coastal Sediment Plume And River Inputs In Southeastern Lake Michigan, Steven E. Lohrenz, Gary L. Fahnenstiel, David F. Millie, Oscar M.E. Schofield, Tom Johengon

Faculty Publications

[1] A recurrent coastal sediment plume (RCP) is an episodic event in the southern basin of Lake Michigan that typically coincides with the spring diatom bloom. Strong winter storm activity during El Nino conditions in 1998 resulted in a large and intense RCP event. Consistently higher values of the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis, P-max(B), were observed in spring 1998 compared to 1999 and 2000. Higher values of P-max(B) in 1998 appeared to be related to increased availability of phosphorus, as evidenced by significant correlations of P-max(B) with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). Light-saturated growth rates were also significantly correlated with SRP …

Finding Cancer Subtypes In Microarray Data Using Random Projections, Debashis Ghosh Oct 2004

Finding Cancer Subtypes In Microarray Data Using Random Projections, Debashis Ghosh

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

One of the benefits of profiling of cancer samples using microarrays is the generation of molecular fingerprints that will define subtypes of disease. Such subgroups have typically been found in microarray data using hierarchical clustering. A major problem in interpretation of the output is determining the number of clusters. We approach the problem of determining disease subtypes using mixture models. A novel estimation procedure of the parameters in the mixture model is developed based on a combination of random projections and the expectation-maximization algorithm. Because the approach is probabilistic, our approach provides a measure for the number of true clusters …

Relationship Among Genes Conferring Partial Resistance To Leaf Rust (Puccinia Triticina) In Wheat Lines Ci 13227 And L-574-1, Jeffrey Lehman

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

This study describes the segregation of genes for resistance to the fungus Puccinia triticina in a cross between partially resistant wheat lines L-574-1 and CI 13227 with two and four genes for resistance, respectively. The objectives of this study were to use parental, F1, F2, and backcross populations to quantify maternal effects, degree of dominance, and transgressive segregation, and to determine whether CI 13227 and L-574- 1 share any resistance genes for long latent period or small uredinia. In two experiments conducted in the greenhouse, the uppermost leaf of adult wheat plants was inoculated prior to heading with P. triticina. …

Upwelling And Degree Of Nutrient Consumption In Nanwan Bay, Southern Taiwan, Chen-Tung Arthur Chen, Bing-Jye Wang, Li-Yu Hsing

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The newly proposed Degree of Nutrient Consumption (DNC) of upwelled waters was used to evaluate the upwelling process in Nanwan Bay off the southern tip of Taiwan. DNC values were found to be low in subsurface waters or in newly upwelled waters. In general, a low DNC value was detected alongside other traditionally used upwelling indicators such as lower temperature, pH and % oxygen saturation but higher salinity, nutrients and chlorophyll a. On the other hand, the DNC value could be several times higher in aged upwelled water found in the surface layer.

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The present study aimed at determining the impact of cooling water discharge from a Nuclear Power Plant in Kenting, Taiwan on the recruitment patterns of marine invertebrates. Field experiments were conducted over a six-year period in the vicinity of the power plant, with six control sites, five at influent areas, one at reference site, and three experimental sites at effluent areas. In general, among the monitoring sites, polychaetes and bryozoans were the most abundant organisms, and their recruitment on settlement plates was always higher in influent than in effluent areas. Partially as a result of a 5-week accidental shutdown of …

Two Drosophila Suppressors Of Cytokine Signaling (Socs) Differentially Regulate Jak And Egfr Pathway Activities, Jason S. Rawlings, Gabriela Rennebeck, Susan M.W. Harrison, Rongwen Xi, Douglas A. Harrison Oct 2004

Two Drosophila Suppressors Of Cytokine Signaling (Socs) Differentially Regulate Jak And Egfr Pathway Activities, Jason S. Rawlings, Gabriela Rennebeck, Susan M.W. Harrison, Rongwen Xi, Douglas A. Harrison

Biology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The Janus kinase (JAK) cascade is an essential and well-conserved pathway required to transduce signals for a variety of ligands in both vertebrates and invertebrates. While activation of the pathway is essential to many processes, mutations from mammals and Drosophila demonstrate that regulation is also critical. The SOCS (Suppressor Of Cytokine Signaling) proteins in mammals are regulators of the JAK pathway that participate in a negative feedback loop, as they are transcriptionally activated by JAK signaling. Examination of one Drosophila SOCS homologue, Socs36E, demonstrated that its expression is responsive to JAK pathway activity and it is capable of downregulating …

The Coastal Currents Offshore The Nuclear Power Plants At Northern Taiwan, Jian-Hwa Hu Oct 2004

The Coastal Currents Offshore The Nuclear Power Plants At Northern Taiwan, Jian-Hwa Hu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Coastal tidal currents play an important role to disperse the warm waters outlet from cooling system of a nuclear power plant (NPP). The modern technique of ship-board acoustic Doppler current profiler (SB-ADCP) was intensively applied to scan the current fields around the three NPPs at northern Taiwan. Sophisticated data processing provides time series of synoptic flow charts of vectors in grids associated with streamlines, allowing the visualization of how the bay like coastline input its boundary layer effect to the current field. The generation of cyclonic or anti-cyclonic vortices inside the bay in flood or ebb tide and their migration …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The nuclear power plants are very important and cheap electric power source for Taiwan. However, the Nuclear Power Plant I and II (NPP I and II) are located in the northern Taiwan where the most populations inhabit. Therefore, the impact of operation of nuclear power plants on the surrounding environment, particularly in the surrounding waters, has drawn great attention to the public of Taiwan. Here we reported the first analyses on a three-year period of monitoring copepod assemblages in the adjacent waters to the NPP I and II. The copepod assemblages in the vicinity waters of NPP I and II …

Marine Environmental Radioactivity Near Nuclear Power Plants In Northern Taiwan, Chih-An Huh, Chih-Chieh Su, Yueh-Yuan Tu, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Ching-Yi Chen, I-Jiunn Cheng

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The levels and composition of environmental radioactivity at the outlets of nuclear power plants and nearby coastal environs in northern Taiwan have been investigated by gamma spectrometric analysis of seawater, algae, fish and sediment samples collected systematically in the past four years. The results show that anthropogenic radionuclides contribute very little to the total radioactivities in all types of samples. Samples from the outlet of the Second Nuclear Power Plant are more enriched in artificial nuclides, with average algae samples containing ~4 Bq/kg of 137Cs + 54Mn + 60Co (or 3.6% of the total activity) and average sediment samples containing …

Physical Properties Of Thermal Plumes From A Nuclear Power Plant In The Southernmost Taiwan, Sen Jan, Chen-Tung Arthur Chen, Yueh-Yuan Tu, Hsien-Shiow Tsai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Circulation and hydrographic variations in the inner shelf of a semi-enclosed bay adjacent to a nuclear power plant of the southernmost Taiwan were analyzed using intensive observation data from 2003-2004. The dominant tide in the bay is a mixture of diurnal and semidiurnal components. Currents are dominated by tidal forcing which flows southwestward during flood and northeastward during ebb. The amplitudes of tidal currents range from 0.2 to 0.4 m/s. A persistent southwestward subtidal flow is present with a mean velocity of 0.15 m/s. The upwelled cold deep water in the central bay can intrude to the inner reach near …

A Trophic Model For Kuosheng Bay In Northern Taiwan, Hsing-Juh Lin, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Jiang-Shiou Hwang, Wen-Tseng Lo, I-Jiunn Cheng, Lih-Huwa Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Using the Ecopath with Ecosim software system, a mass-balanced trophic model of Kuosheng Bay, where the Second Nuclear Power Plant is sited on the coast, was constructed. This model comprised 17 compartments, ranging from a trophic level of 1.00 for primary producers and detritus to 3.97 for piscivorous fish. The geometric mean of the trophic transfer efficiencies was 6.5%. The lower efficiencies were attributable to high flows to detritus, suggesting that the food web was more dependent on detritus than on primary producers to generate total system throughput. The total system throughput, system production, and system biomass were comparable to …

Heterosis For Grain Yield And Other Agronomic Traits In Foxtail Millet, M. M. Siles, William K. Russell, Lenis Alton Nelson, David D. Baltensperger, Blaine Johnson, L. Dale Van Vleck, Stanley G. Jensen, Gary L. Hein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.] is a largely self-pollinating species that is used as a warm-season annual in the USA. Nearly all cultivars of this species grown in the USA are selections from land races. This research was undertaken to determine whether sufficient high-parent heterosis is expressed in foxtail millet for grain yield and other key traits to justify the development and use of varietal crosses. Seven diverse parents and 21 F2s and 21 F3s produced from biparental crosses were evaluated in five environments in 1996. Genotype x environment interaction was highly significant …

Differential display PCR (ddPCR) and complementary DNA microarray analyses were used to evaluate gene expression differences in porcine ovarian follicles between a line of pigs selected for an index of ovulation rate and embryo survival (Line I) and its randomly selected control line (Line C). Follicles (4.0 to 7.0 mm) were dissected from ovaries of multiparous sows (n = 27) at either 2 or 4 d following PGF2α analog injection on d 12 to 14 of the estrous cycle. Using ddPCR, differentially expressed bands (n = 282) were excised from gels and 107 were sequenced, yielding 84 unique porcine follicle …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Formin Homology 2 Domain, Henry N. Higgs, Kevin J. Peterson Oct 2004

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Formin Homology 2 Domain, Henry N. Higgs, Kevin J. Peterson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Formin proteins are key regulators of eukaryotic actin filament assembly and elongation, and many species possess multiple formin isoforms. A nomenclature system based on fundamental features would be desirable, to aid the rapid identification and characterization of novel formins. In this article, we attempt to systematize the formin family by performing phylogenetic analyses of the formin homology 2 (FH2) domain, an independently folding region common to all formins, which alone can influence actin dynamics. Through database searches, we identify 101 FH2 domains from 26 eukaryotic species, including 15 in mice. Sequence alignments reveal a highly conserved yeast-specific insert in the …

It is often suggested that nitrogen absorbed in the vegetative stage of growth acts as a “reservoir” to supply the shortfall in demand during grain filling. The main objective of the work described in this paper was to investigate how effectively nitrogen absorbed at different stages of the growing season was retained and used for grain growth. The total nitrogen in the grain is the integral of the product of the total nitrogen absorbed at any instant and the eventual allocation of a fraction of that nitrogen to the grain. A point-placement technique was used to deliver small amounts of …

Necrotic Lesion Resistance Induced By Peronospora Tabacina On Leaves Of Nicotiana Obtusifolia, E.P. Heist, D. Zaitlin, Deanna L. Funnell, W.C. Nesmith, C.L. Schardl

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Infection of Nicotiana obtusifolia plant introduction (PI) #555573 by the downy mildew pathogen Peronospora tabacina resulted in a compatible interaction, in which P. tabacina penetrated and freely colonized host leaf tissue. This interaction became incompatible 5 to 6 days later, with the appearance of necrotic lesions (NLs) and inhibition of pathogen growth and subsequent sporulation. NL development depended upon the presence of P. tabacina in host tissue, was not due to the effects of other microbes, and occurred co-incident in time with the pathogen’s ability to produce asexual sporangia on a susceptible N. obtusifolia genotype. Inhibition of the necrotic response …

Skeletal Muscle Fiber Atrophy: Altered Thin Filament Density Changes Slow Fiber Force And Shortening Velocity, Danny A. Riley, J. L. W. Bain, Janell Romatowski, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Single skinned fibers from soleus and adductor longus (AL) muscles of weight-bearing control rats and rats after 14-day hindlimb suspension unloading (HSU) were studied physiologically and ultrastructurally to investigate how slow fibers increase shortening velocity (V0) without fast myosin. We hypothesized that unloading and shortening of soleus during HSU reduces densities of thin filaments, generating wider myofilament separations that increase V0 and decrease specific tension (kN/m2). During HSU, plantarflexion shortened soleus working length 23%. AL length was unchanged. Both muscles atrophied as shown by reductions in fiber cross-sectional area. For AL, the 60% atrophy …

Management Of Cattail (Typha Spp.) Stands With Glyphosate To Disperse Blackbirds, George M. Linz, H. Jeffrey Homan, Ryan L. Wimberly, Philip Mastrangelo, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota and South Dakota, blackbirds (Icteridae) gather by the thousands in large premigratory roosts in late summer and early fall. Wetlands dominated by cattails (Typha spp.) provide ideal roosting habitat for these aggregations. Sunflower fields near large roosts can receive substantial damage. To eliminate potential roosting sites, Wildlife Services of the United States Department of Agriculture has implemented a cattail management program that aerially sprays dense cattail stands with the herbicide glyphosate m-(phosphonomethyl) glycine]. The continued viability of the program depends on a positive benefit-cost ratio and minimal environmental impacts. In this …
