Evaluation Of Gene Expression In Pigs Selected For Enhanced Reproduction Using Differential Display Pcr: Ii. Anterior Pituitary, G. R. Bertani, C. D. Gladney, R. K. Johnson, Daniel Pomp
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to identify differentially expressed genes in the anterior pituitary (AP) of sows selected for enhanced reproductive phenotypes. Selection in the Index (I) line was based on an index of ovulation rate and embryo survival, whereas random selection was used in the Control (C) line. Average numbers of fully formed piglets at birth were 12.5 ± 1.5 and 9.9 ± 2.0 for Line I and C sows used in this study, respectively. In order to induce luteolysis and synchronize follicle development, sows were injected (i.m.) with 2 mL of prostaglandin F2α analog between d …
Effect Of Food Availability On Reproduction And Brood Size In A Freshwater Brooding Bivalve, Mark Beekey, Ronald H. Karlson
Effect Of Food Availability On Reproduction And Brood Size In A Freshwater Brooding Bivalve, Mark Beekey, Ronald H. Karlson
Biology Faculty Publications
Brood size is often constrained by the amount of energy available to produce offspring. Yet, energetic constraints may not be as important if the physical capacity to brood offspring is limited. Investigating the relative importance of energetic and physical constraints on brood size is necessary to understand how reproductive strategies are molded by natural selection. We investigated how food availability affects brood size in Sphaerium striatinum, a freshwater bivalve. We reared juveniles to adulthood under three food levels in a common garden experiment. The number of reproductive attempts, brood size, and stage of offspring development were measured. Clams reared …

The Evolution Of Social And Reproductive Monogamy In Peromyscus, Evidence From Peromyscus Californicus (The California Mouse), David O. Ribble
Biology Faculty Research
The genus Peromyscus (deer mice) is an attractive group in which to study the evolution of social and mating behaviours. This genus includes over 50 species (Carleton, 1989) that are widely distributed across North and Central America from coast to coast and from the northern subarctic to Panama (Kirkland & Layne, 1989). The diversity in body sizes among Peromyscus ranges from 13 to 77 g (Millar, 1989) and exceeds that of most other genera. Phylogenetic relationships among species of Peromyscus are relatively well understood (Stangl & Baker, 1984), although the systematics of Peromyscus is an active area of study (e.g., …

Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt
Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Northern river otters (Lontra canadensis) were widespread in North America at the time of European settlement. However, river otters were extirpated from most of Iowa in the early 1900s due to habitat degradation and unregulated harvest. In 1985, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources began an effort to restore the river otter population throughout the state, including a pilot study of survival to determine if establishment was feasible. Annual survival was estimated to be 86% during the pilot study. River otters dispersed an average of about 11 km from the point of release and exhibited habitat use typical for the …
Population Dynamics Of Soft-Furred Field Rat, Millardia Meltada, In Rice And Wheat Fields In Central Punjab, Pakistan, Shaher Bano Lathiya, Abdul Rauf Khokhar, Syed Muzaffar Ahmed
Population Dynamics Of Soft-Furred Field Rat, Millardia Meltada, In Rice And Wheat Fields In Central Punjab, Pakistan, Shaher Bano Lathiya, Abdul Rauf Khokhar, Syed Muzaffar Ahmed
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Data on the abundance, reproduction, diet and damage index of the soft-furred field rat Millardia meltada were collected during the rice and wheat seasons. The abundance of Millardia meltada remained high at the post-harvest stage of the rice and wheat crops. The ploughing of fields did not affect the abundance of Millardia. The mean annual prevalence of pregnancy was 50% and the mean embryonic litter size 6.2 ± 0.4. Millardia continued to eat wheat and rice grains over a long period even when there was no crop standing in the fields. The damage indices in rice and wheat crops were …
Investigation Of Some Population Parameters Of Common Sole, Solea Solea (L., 1758) From İskenderun Bay, Mustafa Türkmen
Investigation Of Some Population Parameters Of Common Sole, Solea Solea (L., 1758) From İskenderun Bay, Mustafa Türkmen
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Data on age, growth, reproduction, mortality and exploitation were examined for common sole collected in İskenderun Bay from March 2000 to February 2001. The examined individuals were aged between 1 and 8 years. Total length ranged from 8.8 to 28.2 cm. The length-weight relationships for males (a = 0.0117, b = 2.998) and females (a = 0.0091, b = 3.077) showed no significant difference from isometric growth. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L_{\infty} = 26.03 cm, k = 0.221 year^{-1}, t_o = -1.31 for males and L_{\infty} = 29.95 cm, k = 0.181 year^{-1}, t_o = -1.55 for females. The …

Gonad Histology And Spawning Pattern Of The White Grouper (Epinephelus Aeneus) From İskenderun Bay (Turkey), Mahmut Ali̇ Gökçe, İbrahi̇m Cengi̇zler, A. Argun Özak
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The gonad histology and spawning pattern of the white grouper (Epinephelus aeneus) were determined from fish sampled from commercial catches. Histological, microscopic and macroscopic techniques were used to examine the ovaries of E. aeneus. A six stage maturity scale based on morphology was proposed to classify ovarian development. The results showed that the white grouper has an asynchronous mode of ovarian development, and the histological study of oocyte development in the white grouper indicated that two types of inclusion, first lipid and then protein, are formed during vitellogenesis. Towards maturation, protein granules and lipid droplets increased in size and number …
Reproduction Of The Silverbelly (Leiognathus Klunzingeri Steindachner, 1898) In Yumurtalık Bight (Adana), Turkey, Meltem Özütok, Dursun Avşar
Reproduction Of The Silverbelly (Leiognathus Klunzingeri Steindachner, 1898) In Yumurtalık Bight (Adana), Turkey, Meltem Özütok, Dursun Avşar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This present study was performed to identify reproductive peculiarities of the silverbelly (Leiognathus klunzingeri) in Yumurtalık Bight. For this purpose, 430 individuals were obtained by monthly sampling between October 1997 and September 1998 and then they were examined. By using the monthly changes in the mean values of the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Fulton's Condition Factor (K), we found that reproduction period occurred between July and September, length at first maturity was 5.8 cm and 5.5 cm for males and females, respectively, egg diameter was between 0.8 and 1.0 mm and mean annual fecundity was 2789 ± 2109.
