The term forested wetland covers a variety of forest types including mangroves, cypress/tupelo swamps, bottomland hardwoods, pocosins and Carolina bays, flatwoods, and mountain fens. These forests are dominated by woody species that have morphological features, physiological adaptations, and/or reproductive strategies enabling them to achieve maturity and reproduce in an environment where the soils within the rooting zone may be inundated or saturated for various periods during the growing season. Although alluvial floodplains occur along most streams of the United States, they are most extensive in the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Gulf Coastal Plain, and Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Only about half of …

Critical Analysis Of Cerebrovascular Autoregulation During Repeated Head-Up Tilt., R L Hughson, M R Edwards, D D O'Leary, J K Shoemaker
Kinesiology Publications
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebrovascular autoregulation has been described with a phase lead of cerebral blood flow preceding changes in cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), but there has been less focus on the effect of CPP on cerebral vascular resistance. We investigated these relations during spontaneous fluctuations (control) and repeated head-up tilt.
METHODS: Eight healthy adults were studied in supine rest and repeated tilt with 10-second supine, 10 seconds at 45 degrees head-up tilt for a total of 12 cycles. Cerebral blood flow was estimated from mean flow velocity (MFV) by transcranial Doppler ultrasound, CPP was estimated from corrected finger pressure (CPP(F)), …

Bipolar Cells Contribute To Nonlinear Spatial Summation In The Brisk-Transient (Y) Ganglion Cell In Mammalian Retina, Jonathan B. Demb, Kareem Zaghloul, Loren Haarsma, Peter Sterling
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The receptive field of the Y-ganglion cell comprises two excitatory mechanisms: one integrates linearly over a narrow field, and the other integrates nonlinearly over a wide field. The linear mechanism has been attributed to input from bipolar cells, and the nonlinear mechanism has been attributed to input from a class of amacrine cells whose nonlinear "subunits" extend across the linear receptive field and beyond. However, the central component of the nonlinear mechanism could in theory be driven by bipolar input if that input were rectified. Recording intracellularly from the Y-cell in guinea pig retina, we blocked the peripheral component of …

Physid Snails As Sentinels Of Freshwater Nematomorphs, Ben Hanelt, L. E. Grother, John J. Janovy Jr.
John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications
Freshwater nematomorphs, or gordiids, are parasitic as larvae, but free-living in aquatic environments as adults. Studies based on the collection of adults have reported gordiids to be widespread, but discontinuous in distribution. However, a relatively short adult life span and unknown life history make the detection of adults difficult. An alternative approach to investigate gordiid distribution is to use cysts. Of all paratenic hosts, snails were chosen because they lacked internal defense reactions to the cysts and become easily infected. Here, it is reported that the occurrence of gordiids on the basis of the cyst stage is much more common …

Epimerite-Host Epithelium Relationships Among Eugregarines Parasitizing The Damselflies Enallagma Civile And Ischnura Verticalis, Tamara J. Percival Cook, John J. Janovy Jr., Richard E. Clopton
John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications
The host-parasite interface between two species of damselflies and four species of eugregarines was examined at the ultrastructural level. Nubenocephalus nebraskensis organisms attached to the host midgut epithelium by means of a sucker-like protomerite; the space between the epicytic folds and host epithelium was filled with electron-dense material interpreted to be adhesive in nature. Actinocephalus carrilynnae organisms attached by means of the epimerite, which had no epicytic folds, and by the fluted stalk with characteristic epicytic folds; host cell and parasite membranes appeared fused at some places on the epimerite. Hoplorhynchus acanthatholius organisms attached by means of an ovoid epimerite …

Corn Stalk Nitrate Concentration Profile: Implications For The End-Of-Season Stalk Nitrate Test, Wally Wilhelm, Gary E. Varvel, James S. Schepers
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The end-of-season corn (Zea maysL.) stalk nitrate-N test was developed as a post-mortem to determine if excessive or insufficient N was available to the corn crop during the latter part of the season. The stalk section specified for the test was very specific, the 20 cm-long section between 15 and 35 cm above the soil. Under production conditions, it may not always be possible to collect this precise stalk section. The objective of this study was to determine how nitrate concentration varied within the stalk from the soil level to the ear node, and how this variation could …

Ocean Drilling Constrains Carbonate Platform Formation And Miocene Sea Level On The Australian Margin, Alexandra R. Isern, F. S. Anselmetti, P. Blum, Shipboard Scientific Party
Ocean Drilling Constrains Carbonate Platform Formation And Miocene Sea Level On The Australian Margin, Alexandra R. Isern, F. S. Anselmetti, P. Blum, Shipboard Scientific Party
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Carbonate platforms are large geologic structures composed of the remains of formerly living, calcium carbonate‐secreting organisms that can develop in environments ranging from tropical to temperate, and in locations that are free of siliceous sediment to those with significant amounts of sediment from land. Because these platforms are composed of biogenic remains sensitive to changes in environmental conditions such as sea level, wind or currents, nutrient content, and water temperature, the study of carbonate platforms provides fundamental information regarding environmental change in a range of environments. In addition to their high‐quality environmental record, carbonate platforms are often important petroleum reservoirs. …

Temporal And Spatial Variation Of Nitrogen Transformations In Nitrogen-Saturated Soils Of A Central Appalachian Hardwood Forest, Frank S. Gilliam, Bradley M. Yurish, Mary Beth Adams
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
We studied temporal and spatial patterns of soil nitrogen (N) dynamics from 1993 to 1995 in three watersheds of Fernow Experimental Forest, W.V.: WS7 (24-year-old, untreated); WS4 (mature, untreated); and WS3 (24-year-old, treated with (NH4)2SO since 1989 at the rate of 35 kg Nha–1year–1). Net nitrification was 141, 114, and115 kg Nha–1year–1, for WS3, WS4, and WS7, respectively, essentially 100% of net N mineralization for all watersheds. Temporal (seasonal) patterns of nitrification were significantly related to soil moisture and ambient temperaturein untreated watersheds only. Spatial patterns of soil water NO3–of WS4 suggest that microenvironmental variabilitylimits rates of N processing in …

Recreational user data was collected from postage paid post cards left on vehicles and through personal interviews. Pressure data was collected during a roving survey from ground counts of vehicles, boat trailers, recreational users. Aerial counts were made to compare angling and recreational boating data with ground count data. Recreational users spent an estimated 745,303 hours on the Missouri River survey reach during 2000. Fishing accounted for an estimated 458,749 hours, or 62% of …
Cocaine- And Amphetamine-Regulated Transcript Peptide Modulation Of Voltage-Gated Ca2+ Signaling In Hippocampal Neurons, Elena (Olena) Petroff, Jianguo Chen, Pastor R. Couceyro, Toshinori Hoshi
Cocaine- And Amphetamine-Regulated Transcript Peptide Modulation Of Voltage-Gated Ca2+ Signaling In Hippocampal Neurons, Elena (Olena) Petroff, Jianguo Chen, Pastor R. Couceyro, Toshinori Hoshi
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Administration of cocaine and amphetamine increases cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) expression in the rat striatum (Douglass et al., 1995). CART mRNA is highly expressed in different parts of the human and rat brain, including hippocampus (Douglass et al., 1995; Couceyro et al., 1997; Kuhar and Yoho, 1999; Hurd and Fagergren, 2000). The presence of CART peptide 55-102 immunoreactivity in dense core vesicles of axon terminals suggests that the peptide may be released and may act as a neuromodulator (Smith et al., 1997) to induce neurophysiological and behavioral effects. Little is known, however, about CART peptide-responsive cells, receptor(s), or intracellular …
