Nf01-478 Creating A Strong Family: "I Should Have Spent More Time At Work", John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The key for family members is finding a level of commitment and emotional bond that works for everyone. Each of us has different needs in this regard, and often, some compromises need to be worked out. For what it's worth, I vote for a commitment to family over work and making this commitment long before it's too late. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure when it comes to family dynamics.

Nf01-477 Creating A Strong Family: We Are One, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Though the benefits of long-term commitment to each other are great, the price we pay for this high value we place on our loved ones is not small, by any stretch of the imagination. When we lose a cherished loved one, the feelings of loss can be overwhelming. These feelings, though they may soften over time, still reside in our private souls. A warm and sad spirit. An undercurrent of melancholy that we carry with us as long as we live.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This creative genius never disappears, even in those times when family income is shrinking rather than expanding. But in tough times, it is especially important that family members remember to communicate with each other in positive rather than negative ways. This is not easy to do, of course, Parents flush with money still find it difficult to keep their cool when faced with what may seem like a teen-ager's insatiable demand for the latest clothing or shoes so that the youngster can fit in with everyone else at school. In the best of times, $75 or $100 or $125 basketball …

Nf01-481 Creating A Strong Family: Life As A Soap Opera, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

And one doesn't have to look far to see loopy behavior among adults, either. Meetings at the office occasionally get out of control as we feed off each other's emotions, both negative and positive. Citizens in this country - and many others - often view national politics as one gigantic and long-running uncontrollable cybernetic feedback loop. As we strive to communicate effectively with each other in our families, the delicate balance lies in how we manage to keep the sparkle of positive emotion alive in our very intimate relationships with each other, while minimizing negative emotional interchanges that can easily …

Nf01-485 Creating A Strong Family: Listening And Speaking From The Heart, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

For 45 minutes the woman discussed her husband's distress and her own feelings of inadequacy as she struggled in vain to find ways to help him. I listened closely and suggested she contact a good counselor in her hometown - one familiar with alcohol use - to work with both of them. The conversation wouldn't have been particularly remarkable, except that she and I had just met for the first time on a brief airplane flight. I sat down next to her, said How's life? and she told me. In great detail.

Ec01-797 Filtration And Maintenance: Considerations For Subsurface Drip Irrigation (Sdi), Brian Benham, Jose O. Payero

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

When using Subsurface Drip Irrigation (SDI) systems, it is important to prevent clogging problems before they occur. The best prevention plan includes an effective filtration and water treatment strategy. Depending on the water source and its quality, various combinations of sand separation, filtration and chemical treatments may be required and are discussed here in this extension circular.

Ec01-157 Precision Agriculture: Untangling The Gps Data String, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Most people associate precision farming or site-specific management with the global positioning system (GPS). It is used to locate the antenna of aGPS receiver on Earth. GPS provides the opportunity to record a set of geographic coordinates that specify a particular field location. Therefore, field data collected using GPS technology is georeferenced. Processing of these data is complicated, and software packages designed for precision farming applications have built-in capabilities to interpret the GPS receiver output. However, some simple operations can be performed using standard office software. In this case, it is necessary to know the basics behind GPS data. The …

Nf01-472 Growing Annual Flowers, Anne Streich, Susan D. Schoneweis, Steven Rodie

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Annual flowers can be a prime source of color to accent and enliven a home's landscape. While flowering trees and shrubs provide short bursts of color, most annuals begin blooming within a month of planting and flower until frost. The wide range of colors, sizes and species adapted to either sun or shade makes it possible to plant annual flowers almost anywhere. Annuals are perfect for beds, borders, rock gardens, window boxes, hanging baskets or as temporary ground covers and fillers.

Nf01-487 Creating A Strong Family: Living In The Moment, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

As a young father, I learned to live in the moment. And to enjoy the moment. I think it was the time when the doctors thought I might have a brain tumor or an aneurysm. I'd been having headaches for several weeks, and they just wouldn't go away. As a young professor back then, I had been under considerable stress, or, perhaps, was creating considerable stress in my life by over-involving myself in what at the time seemed to be important activities.

Submerged And Solid-State Phytase Fermentation By Aspergillus Niger: Effects Of Agitation And Medium Viscosity On Phytase Production, Fungal Morphology And Inoculum Performance, Maria Papagianni, Sue E. Nokes, Keith Filer Jan 2001

Submerged And Solid-State Phytase Fermentation By Aspergillus Niger: Effects Of Agitation And Medium Viscosity On Phytase Production, Fungal Morphology And Inoculum Performance, Maria Papagianni, Sue E. Nokes, Keith Filer

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Qualitative relationships between agitation levels and medium viscosity, Aspergillus niger morphology and phytase production were investigated in submerged and solid-state fermentations. Overall phytase production increased with increasing shaker speeds from 150 to 300 rpm, although specific growth rates and phytase production rates were higher at 150 rpm for 72 h from inoculation. Fungal morphology was greatly influenced by agitation with the morphological forms of small pellets and entangled mycelia predominating at 150 rpm, while the free filamentous form was obtained at 300 rpm. Upon inoculation of SSF, increased productivities were obtained from inocula grown at 150 rpm. A shift towards …

Tests Of A Rotenone-Impregnated Bait For Controlling Common Carp, Joseph L. Bonneau, Dennis L. Scarnecchia Jan 2001

Tests Of A Rotenone-Impregnated Bait For Controlling Common Carp, Joseph L. Bonneau, Dennis L. Scarnecchia

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

An experimental rotenone-impregnated pelleted (approximately 10 mg/pellet) bait was tested in force-feeding and field-feeding experiments as a method of control for common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Mortality rates of force-fed fish ranged from less than 40% when fed one pellet to 100% when fed more than 10 pellets. Mortality occurred within 48 h. Mortality rates of control fish did not exceed 10%. In reservoir feeding trials in 1994 and 1995, carp were fed for 2-3 weeks on a non-toxic, vegetable-based bait dispensed by automatic feeders, followed by one feeding of the bait with rotenone added. Carp ceased feeding on the rotenone …

Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Bluntnose Darters And Crystal Darters In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler Jan 2001

Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Bluntnose Darters And Crystal Darters In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The distribution and status of Iowa's fishes were last extensively described in Iowa Fish and Fishing (Harlan et al. 1987). Since then, numerous fish collections have been made in Iowa's interior and bordering rivers and streams. Excluding non-native species, there have been three documented accounts of new fish species distributional records in Iowa since 1987. In this paper, I describe new collections of crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella) and bluntnose darter (Etheostoma chlorosomum) from the Mississippi River. The first documented specimen of C. asprella in Iowa was collected in Pool 11 of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) in 1995. One specimen …

Tillage Effect On Soil Water Content And Soybean (Glycine Max) Yield In A Strip Intercropping System, M. Ghaffarzadeh, F. Garcia Prechac, M. M. Harbur, R. M. Cruse

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] response to strip-intercropping with corn (Zea may L.) and oat (Avena Jativa L.) interseeded with nondormant alfalfa (Medicago Jativa L.) may be affected by soil moisture. A three-crop strip-intercropping system of corn, soybean and oat interseeded with nondormant alfalfa was established to determine the effect of tillage system and row position on soil water content and grain yield in the soybean strip. The experiment was a split-plot design with three tillage treatments (conventional, CT; reduced, RT; and minimum tillage, MT) as main plot effects and three row positions (both edge rows and the center …

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen Jan 2001

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Historically, the tetraploid and diploid species pair of gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis, were mapped collectively in Iowa because no macroscopic morphological characteristics useful in recognizing the two species had been found. The present study reports identification and separation of the species by counts of nucleoli in the palpebral membrane of the eye and by measurement of scanning electron micrographs of toepad epithelial projections. Subsequent morphometric data confirm that the two species are morphologically distinct in Iowa but that overlap in characters continues to make macroscopic morphology unreliable for identifying individuals. H. chrysoscelis is distributed sporadically though all …

Fraxinus Parryi, Nom. Nov., Of Nw Baja California, Mexico, Reid Moran Jan 2001

Fraxinus Parryi, Nom. Nov., Of Nw Baja California, Mexico, Reid Moran

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The common ash of NW Baja California is usually called Fraxinus trifoliata, as in Wiggins' (1980) flora of Baja California. That name is a misspelling of F. trifoliolat, which is a later homonym of F. rriJoliolara W. W. Smith (1916). The Baja Californian ash is therefore renamed Fraxinus parryi. It has also been misidentified as F. jonesii. The common name is "crucecilla". This ash barely extends into San Diego County, California.

Systematics And Relationships Of Fallugia (Rosoideae—Rosaceae), James Henrickson Jan 2001

Systematics And Relationships Of Fallugia (Rosoideae—Rosaceae), James Henrickson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The paper presents a systematic monograph of Fallugia (Rosoideae, Rosaceae) consisting of one variable species, Fallugia paradoxa. Morphological, cytological and molecular data clearly support its relationship with Geums.l. rather than Purshia-Cowani, with which it is often allied. The species was named twice independently in 1825 from the specimens and drawings, respectively, assembled by Sessé and Mociño for their proposed Flora Mexicana. The paper discusses the nomenclatural history, morphological variation, and the polygarno-dioecious mode of reproduction of the species. No infraspecific taxa are recognized.
