Planning For Multi-Purpose Riparian Management, Gary Bentrup, Mike Dosskey, Kelly Klenke, Tim Leininger, Michele Schoeneberger, Gary Wells
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Proper riparian management can provide numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits. At the USDA National Agroforestry Center, we are tailoring the land-use planning process to facilitate riparian management in the Western Corn Belt ecoregion for multiple benefits. This planning framework integrates regional, landscape and site scale planning approaches into a unified framework. In this framework, regional and landscape-scale public issues are addressed along with site-scale landowner objectives to facilitate balanced management plans providing broad mutual benefits. Our question-driven framework provides general guidance for inventory and analysis, preparation of planning objectives, and development and evaluation of management options. To support the …

Direct Determination Of The Kinetics Of Oxygen Diffusion To The Photocytes Of A Bioluminescent Elaterid Larva, Measurement Of Gas- And Aqueous-Phase Diffusional Barriers And Modelling Of Oxygen Supply, G. S. Timmins, E. J. Bechara, H. M. Swartz
Dartmouth Scholarship
We describe the development and use of a direct kinetic technique to determine the time taken for oxygen to diffuse from the external environment into the light-producing cells (photocytes) in the prothorax of bioluminescent larvae of Pyrearinus termitilluminans. This was achieved by measuring the time course of the pseudoflash induced through sequential anoxia followed by normoxia. We have also determined the separate times taken for this oxygen diffusion in gaseous and tissue (predominantly aqueous) phases by using helium and nitrogen as the carrier gas. Of the total time taken for diffusion, that in the gas phase required 613+/-136 ms (mean …

The Open Reading Frame 5a Of Foxtail Mosaic Virus Is Expressed In Vivo And Is Dispensable For Systemic Infection, N.L. Robertson, Roy C. French, Thomas Jack Morris
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Infectious transcripts were successfully derived from full-length cDNA clones of foxtail mosaic potexvirus (FoMV). Full-length clones were constructed by RT-PCR whereby 50 and 30 genomic segments of 2.7 and 3.4 kb, respectively, were ligated into Bluescript II KS. The in vitro RNA transcripts were infectious to moncotyledonous (barley) and dicotyledonous (Chenopodium amaranticolor) plant species. Individual mutation studies on clones of each of the five major ORFs confirmed predicted gene function for the polymerase, TGB (triple gene block), and coat protein (CP) genes. Protoplast studies on expression of a unique open reading frame, ORF 5A, which initiates 143 nts …
What Can We Expect From The Markets For The Next Few Months, Lynn Lutgen
What Can We Expect From The Markets For The Next Few Months, Lynn Lutgen
Cornhusker Economics
When we started into June we had the chance of fluctuating markets due to drought in some areas and hot weather coupled with inadequate subsoil moisture in other areas of the United States. Then the rains started, and since then we have had general widespread and very adequate rainfall. Now that is not to say that some areas such as Southwestern Nebraska are not suffering from drought conditions, but for most of the U.S. the drought and chance of drought has certainly been curtailed.

Strategy For The Conservation Of Non-Game Birds In The State Of Nebraska, Jacqueline Lee Canterbury
Strategy For The Conservation Of Non-Game Birds In The State Of Nebraska, Jacqueline Lee Canterbury
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Non-game birds comprise 93% of the 831 species recorded in the U.S; of these, forest birds and neotropical migrants have received considerable attention. To develop a management plan for non-game birds in Nebraska, historically a predominately grassland ecosystem, it was necessary to determine species in need of conservation and assess their respective habitat status. Using BBS and PIF databases, we developed a prioritization scheme that identified 44 breeding species in need of conservation in Nebraska; 20 of the 44 are grassland birds. Because several species in need of conservation known to occur in the state were missing from these databases, …

Description Of A New Subspecies Of Poanes Aaroni (Hesperioidae: Hesperiinae) From The West Central Gulf Coast Of The Southern United States, Ronald R. Gatrelle
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
Poanes aaroni bordeloni is described from Jefferson County, Texas, United States. This taxon is part of a lepidopteran community endemic to the west central area of the United States Gulf Coast between Mobile Bay, Alabama and Galveston Bay, Texas. As such, bordeloni is defined taxonomically by its evolutionary development as much as by its facies. Bordeloni is the largest aaroni subspecies. Bordeloni males are marked much like those of P. a. howardi both dorsally and ventrally. Bordeloni females usually have the fulvous spotting on the dorsal forewings reduced as in P. a. minimus females while …

Burrow Morphology And Behavior Of The Mud Shrimp Upogebia Omissa (Decapoda: Thalassinidea: Upogebiidae), Vania Rodrigues Coelho, Roland Arthur Cooper, Sergio De Almeida Rodrigues
Collected Faculty Scholarship
The burrow morphology, burrowing behavior and feeding mechanisms of the thalassinidean shrimp Upogebia omissa were studied. Twenty burrow casts were made in situ with epoxy resin, and an overall 'Y' shape was most frequently observed. Several burrows consisted of a single, oblique tunnel; burrow diameter was positively correlated with burrow length, maximum depth and distance between openings. Additionally, burrow length was positively associated with maximum depth, indicating that as burrow length increased burrow depth increased; i.e. burrows spread vertically rather than horizontally. Total sediment displacement by the burrows accounted for 2.6 % of sediment to a depth of 30 cm. …

Acreage Trends Mixed For Gmos, Roy Frederick
Cornhusker Economics
USDA’s June Crop Report made headlines mostly because the corn acreage planted for 2000 exceeded expectations. At 79.6 million acres, the total was at least 1 million acres higher than most pre-report guesses. Prices skidded, helped along by reports of timely rains throughout the Corn Belt.

Parameter Estimates For Greasy Fleece Weight Of Rambouillet Sheep At Different Ages, J. W. Lee, D. F. Waldron, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Variance components for greasy fleece weight in Rambouillet sheep were estimated. Greasy fleece weight was modeled either as repeated measurements on the same trait or as different traits at different ages. The original data were separated according to the age of the ewe at shearing into three classes; 1 yr, 2 and 3 yr, and older than 3 yr. An animal model was used to obtain estimates of genetic parameters with a REML algorithm. Total numbers of animals in pedigrees for the different age classes were 696, 729, and 573, respectively, and 822 for the repeated measures model across ages. …

The Impacts Of The Introduced European Green Crab, Carcinus Maenas, On Selected Bivalves And Meiofaunal Communities, Zasha A. Bassett
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines the potential impact of the invasive green crab, Carcinus maenas, in Yaquina Bay, Oregon. I sampled the current extent of crab colonization in the intertidal zone of Yaquina Bay using a standardized trapping regimen in selected intertidal sites in August and September 1999. I also evaluated the potential impacts of C. maenas on the commercially important bivalve, Crassotrea gigas. Carcinus' preferred size ranges of C. gigas and other species were experimentally determined. Additionally, Carcinus species preference for C. gigas was examined in relation to two common bivalves, Mytilus trossolus and Macoma nasuta. Experiments were …

Cloning Of The Bovine Immunodeficiency Virus Gag Gene And Development Of A Recombinant-Protein-Based Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, Ling Zheng, Michelle Swanson, Jinghua Liao, Charles Wood, Sanjay Kapil, Ron Snider, Thomas A. Loughin, Harish Minocha
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was established for the rapid detection of specific bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) antibodies in cattle, using recombinant Gag protein as an antigen. The gag coding region from BIV was cloned into an expression vector, pQE32, which expressed high levels of recombinant protein from Escherichia coli. The ELISA was standardized by a checkerboard titration against known BIV-positive and -negative sera from cattle and a monoclonal antibody to the Gag protein. A total of 139 cattle serum samples, from the diagnostic laboratory at Kansas State University, Manhattan, and from the Dairy Station, Louisiana State University, Baton …
