Eucalypt Woodlands A Guide To Management, Liz Brown, Colin Holt Oct 2000

Eucalypt Woodlands A Guide To Management, Liz Brown, Colin Holt

Natural resources published reports

This guide was mainly developed using information gathered from studies in Salmon gum (E. salmonophloia) woodlands. However, the principles in this guide can be broadly applied as it considers the general ecological processes that occur within most woodlands.

If your goal is to restore a woodland to a healthy, functioning unit with a range of original species, this guide provides a way of diagnosing the health of individual woodlands and some of the causes of poor health. It also suggests some relevant management actions.

There is a huge array of different types of Euclaypr Woodlands in the Western Australian Whearbelr, …

Varying The Abundance Of O Antigen In Rhizobium Etli And Its Effect On Symbiosis With Phaseolus Vulgaris, K. Dale Noel, Lennart Scott Forsberg, Russell W. Carlson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Judged by migration of its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in gel electrophoresis, the O antigen of Rhizobium etli mutant strain CE166 was apparently of normal size. However, its LPS sugar composition and staining of the LPS bands after electrophoresis indicated that the proportion of its LPS molecules that possessed O antigen was only 40% of the wild-type value. Its LPS also differed from the wild type by lacking quinovosamine (2-amino-2,6-dideoxyglucose). Both of these defects were due to a single genetic locus carrying a Tn5 insertion. The deficiency in O-antigen amount, but not the absence of quinovosamine, was suppressed by transferring into …

Is Reproduction By Tree Swallows (Tachycineta Bicolor) Cost-Free?, Michael T. Murphy Oct 2000

Is Reproduction By Tree Swallows (Tachycineta Bicolor) Cost-Free?, Michael T. Murphy

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We manipulated brood sizes of Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) in 1996 and 1997 to test for the existence of intra- and intergenerational costs of reproduction. Modal clutch size was six eggs, but experimental brood sizes ranged from two to nine young. Nestling starvation was higher in 1996 (and dependent on brood size) than in 1997, but in both years enlargement of brood size resulted in increased productivity. Nestling mass near fledging was negatively correlated with brood size, but tarsus length and wing chord were not. Food deliveries by parents increased steadily between broods of two to six young but then …

Improved Beef Demand Benefits Nebraska Cattle Producers, Richard T. Clark Sep 2000

Improved Beef Demand Benefits Nebraska Cattle Producers, Richard T. Clark

Cornhusker Economics

From 1979 until 1997 inflation-adjusted, retail beef prices in the U.S. declined by over 30%. During this same time period, per capita consumption declined about 10 pounds. These two facts, declining prices and declining consumption, lead to the conclusion that demand for beef in the U.S. declined over this time period.

Environmental Finance Charette, Hyannis Park On Lewis Bay: A Case Study, New England Environmental Finance Center, Environmental Finance Center Of University Of Maryland

Water

The town of Yarmouth currently has a $30 million septic sludge treatment plant and transport lines in place. The vast majority of the dwellings and businesses in the Hyannis Park area are on septic systems that are viable and Title 5 compliant, regardless of age. Conventional, "non-failing" septic systems, however, were never intended to remove form their effluent nutrients such as nitrogen. These have become recognized as an environmental threat only as our understanding of the impacts of excess nutrients on ecosystems has increased in recent decades.

Employee Motivation, Lance L. Cummins-Brown Sep 2000

Employee Motivation, Lance L. Cummins-Brown

Cornhusker Economics

Currently in the state of Nebraska, there is a shortage of agricultural workers. As Nebraska’s population continues to move east, and the size of grain and livestock operations continue to increase, finding and retaining employees will become a necessity for more agricultural producers. Research is being conducted at the University of Nebraska to improve the leadership skills of producers. Even though there are many skills successful leaders need to have, one of the most important is being able to motivate your employees. A recent study looked at the relationship between an employee’s source of motivation and the type of behaviors …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We used an airborne Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (AFTIR), coupled to a flow-through, air-sampling cell, on a King Air B-90 to make in situ trace gas measurements in isolated smoke plumes from four, large, boreal zone wildfires in interior Alaska during June 1997. AFTIR spectra acquired near the source of the smoke plumes yielded excess mixing ratios for 13 of the most common trace gases: water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitric oxide, formaldehyde, acetic acid, formic acid, methanol, ethylene, acetylene, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. Emission ratios to carbon monoxide for formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methanol were 2.2±0.4%, 1.3±0.4%, and …

A Conserved Mechanism For Post-Transcriptional Gene Silencing?, Eleanor M. Maine Sep 2000

A Conserved Mechanism For Post-Transcriptional Gene Silencing?, Eleanor M. Maine

Biology - All Scholarship

Proteins with homology to RNA-directed RNA polymerases function in post-transcriptional gene silencing: in quelling in the fungus Neurospora crassa, RNAi in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, and co-suppression in the mustard plant Arabidopsis thaliana. These findings are consistent with a conserved mechanism operating in these diverse species.

Is Grass The Cheapest Feed?, Richard T. Clark Sep 2000

Is Grass The Cheapest Feed?, Richard T. Clark

Cornhusker Economics

A recent IRM meeting with cattle producers in Gering highlighted the fact that different producers have different approaches to answering this question. It was quite obvious that the answer is “it depends.” It depends on the availability and cost of alternative sources of nutrition for the animal, labor costs and producer goals.

Agriculture, Trade And The Wto, E. Wesley F. Peterson Sep 2000

Agriculture, Trade And The Wto, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Cornhusker Economics

The Uruguay Round (UR) of trade negotiations, conducted under the auspices of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), ran from 1986 to 1994. The final UR agreement brought agriculture under the full discipline of the GATT for the first time. It also established the World Trade Organization (WTO) which incorporates all of the earlier agreements included in the GATT as well as the Agreement on Agriculture and several other components. These agreements were officially signed in Marrakesh, Morocco in 1995 and entered into force that same year after they were ratified by national governments, including that of the …
