The Effect Of Floor Sitting Posture On Low-Back Pain, Knee Pain And Hip Pain Among Kuwaiti Men, Sameera H. Al-Jedi Aug 1998

The Effect Of Floor Sitting Posture On Low-Back Pain, Knee Pain And Hip Pain Among Kuwaiti Men, Sameera H. Al-Jedi

Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Background and Purpose. Ground resting posture is common in Kuwait and other Arab communities. Kuwaiti men gather daily, especially on weekend nights socializing in the Diwaniya. Diwaniya is a special room in every Kuwaiti house. The Diwaniya is traditionally furnished with seating cushions and pillows. Men are seated on the floor in a tailor-sitting posture for long periods of time. The tailor-sitting posture flexes the trunk. hips, and knees. The flexion position has been shown to decrease the lumbar lordosis and increase joint compression in hips and knees. However there are no studies about the effect of floor sitting …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The profession of plant pathology strives to improve the health and safety of the public through improved plant health systems. This includes the benefits afforded by well-managed urban landscapes and abundant food and fiber. However, the proud glow of the profession of plant pathology has dimmed over the past 20 years to the point that some members of the American Phytopathological Society (APS), the principal professional society of plant pathologists in the United States, are not sure what a plant pathologist should know or what a plant pathologist is responsible for (Phytopathology News 30:162). Without a unified, positive direction for …

Patellofemoral Joint Compressive Forces During Backward And Forward Running At The Same Speed, Hesham N. Alrowayeh Aug 1998

Patellofemoral Joint Compressive Forces During Backward And Forward Running At The Same Speed, Hesham N. Alrowayeh

Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A previous study found that the patellofemoral joint compressive force (PFJRF) during backward running was less than during forward running at free speed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the patellofemoral joint compressive forces during backward and forward running at the same speed. Ten runners (4 females, 6 males) between the age of 20-25 (X=22, SD=2) ran in backward and forward directions at the slow speed of 2.3 mph (1.0 m.sec-1). Using the inverse dynamic technique the knee extensor moment and PFJRF during the slow backward and forward running were calculated. Results showed that the …

Comparison Of The Emg Activity Of The Supraspinatus And Infraspinatus Muscles During Various Closed Chain Exercises, I-Chen Lin

Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Advantages of closed chain exercises used in the lower extremity have been well documented. However, the effects of closed chain exercises on the upper extremities have not been studied very much. Thus, the purpose of this research is to analyze the EMG activity of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles and compare the relative amounts of activities by performing different isotonic closed chain exercises and an open chain exercise in normal subjects. The supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles in 1 o healthy subjects were studied with fine wire, intramuscular, electromyographic electrodes while performing 5 closed chain exercises and a D2. open chain …

Radiocarbon From Nuclear Testing Applied To Age Validation Of Black Drum, Pogonias Cromis, Steven E. Campana, Cynthia M. Jones Aug 1998

Radiocarbon From Nuclear Testing Applied To Age Validation Of Black Drum, Pogonias Cromis, Steven E. Campana, Cynthia M. Jones

OES Faculty Publications

Radiocarbon ((14)C) in the world's oceans increased sharply between 1950 and 1970 as a result of the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. Through comparison with the (14)C time series reconstructed from atmospheric measurements and marine carbonates, Kalish, in 1993, used the (14)C concentration measured in fish otolith cores as a means of confirming the annulus-based age estimates for some South Pacific fish species. Here we report the pre-and postbomb (14)C chronology of North Atlantic adult black drum (Pogonias cronis), assumed to be between 15 and 42 yr of age on the basis of otolith annulus counts. According to …

In Vitro Assessment Of The Toxicity Of Cocaine And Its Metabolites In The Human Umbilical Artery, Tessa L. Long

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An in vitro model was used to assess the effect of cocaine and its metabolites on the umbilical artery. Objectives were to pharmacologically confirm the presence of adrenergic innervation using tyramine, evaluate the ability of cocaine, benzoylecgonine, norcocaine and cocaethylene to potentiate vasoconstriction by serotonin and norepinephrine, examine the ability of ketanserin to block the enhanced vasoconstriction produced by cocaine, and determine displacement of 3 H-ketanserin by serotonin, norepinephrine, tyramine and mianserin. The vasoconstrictive effect of tyramine (100 μM) was enhanced in the presence of cocaine by 257%. Vasoconstrictive effects of serotonin and norepinephrine were significantly enhanced by cocaine by …

Estimating And Using Probabilities In Farm And Ranch Decisions, Al Wellman Jul 1998

Estimating And Using Probabilities In Farm And Ranch Decisions, Al Wellman

Cornhusker Economics

A probability is a number that measures the likelihood or chance that a particular event will occur. This number, in terms of fractions or percentages, must be between zero (0) and one (1). Zero means there is no chance that the event will happen, and one means it is certain to happen. In between are all the possible probabilities that it will or will not happen. The sum of the probabilities of all the possible events that can occur in a given situation must add up to one.

Concerted Formation Of Macromolecular Suppressor-Mutator Transposition Complexes, Ramesh Raina, Michael Schläppi, Balasulojini Karunanandaa, Adam Elhofy, Nina V. Fedoroff

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Transposition of the maize Suppressor-mutator (Spm) transposon requires two element-encoded proteins, TnpA and TnpD. Although there are multiple TnpA binding sites near each element end, binding of TnpA to DNA is not cooperative, and the binding affinity is not markedly affected by the number of binding sites per DNA fragment. However, intermolecular complexes form cooperatively between DNA fragments with three or more TnpA binding sites. TnpD, itself not a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein, binds to TnpA and stabilizes the TnpA-DNA complex. The high redundancy of TnpA binding sites at both element ends and the protein-protein interactions between DNA-bound TnpA …

The Orgins Of The Seasonal Cycle In 19th Century Us Money Markets And The Evolution Of Futures Contracts, Joseph Santos Jul 1998

The Orgins Of The Seasonal Cycle In 19th Century Us Money Markets And The Evolution Of Futures Contracts, Joseph Santos

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

Early scholars of aggregate fluctuations, including Jevons ( 1884) and Kemmerer ( 1910), introduced the notion that seasonal cycles were relevant to the study of other, seemingly more important, fluctuations in macroeconomic time series. Kuznets (1933) continued this approach, recognizing the tendency for seasonal variations to exacerbate the variability of employment and capital accumulation. But, as economic contractions intensified in the J 930's, economists began to discount the relative importance of the seasonal cycle. Work by Mitchell (1927), Pigou (I 929) and later, Burns and Mitchell ( 194 7), promulgated the view that fluctuations in commercial activity were relevant to …

Thermoregulation Of Escherichia Coil Pap Transcription: H-Ns Is A Temperature-Dependent Dna Methylation Blocking Factor, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Melinda L. Angus Hill, Bruce A. Braaten, Marjan W. Van Der Woude, David A. Low Jul 1998

Thermoregulation Of Escherichia Coil Pap Transcription: H-Ns Is A Temperature-Dependent Dna Methylation Blocking Factor, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Melinda L. Angus Hill, Bruce A. Braaten, Marjan W. Van Der Woude, David A. Low

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The expression of Pap pili that facilitate the attach- ment of Escherichia coli to uroepithelial cells is shut off outside the host at temperatures below 268C. Ribo- nuclease protection analysis showed that this thermo- regulatory response was rapid as evidenced by the absence of papBA transcripts, coding for Pap pilin, after only one generation of growth at 238C. The his- tone-like nucleoid structuring protein H-NS and DNA sequences within papB were required for thermoregu- lation, but the PapB and PapI regulatory proteins were not. In vivo analysis of pap DNA methylation patterns indicated that H-NS or a factor regulated by …
