The chemokine receptors CCR5 and CXCR4 are used by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in conjunction with CD4 to infect cells. In addition, some virus strains can use alternative chemokine receptors, including CCR2b and CCR3, for infection. A polymorphism in CCR2 (CCR2-V64I) is associated with a 2- to 4-year delay in the progression to AIDS. To investigate the mechanism of this protective effect, we studied the expression of CCR2b and CCR2b-V64I, their chemokine and HIV-1 coreceptor activities, and their effects on the expression and receptor activities of the major HIV-1 coreceptors. CCR2b and CCR2b-V64I were expressed at …

The Chickpea Book : A Technical Guide To Chickpea Production, Stephen Loss, Neil Brandon, K H M. Siddique
Bulletins 4000 -
The area of chickpea production in Australia has expanded rapidly in recent years especially in south-western Australia. This has been partly brought about by the keen interest of farmers and a concerted research effort and industry development by Agriculture Western Australia, The Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA) and other institutions, in partnership with the Grains Research and Development Corporation and other industry funding bodies. Private consultants, grain traders and other industry groups have also contributed to the expansion of the industry.
Much of the local knowledge generated by these research and development projects has been published in various …

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains require intimin to induce attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions in newborn piglets. Infection of newborn calves with intimin-positive or intimin-negative EHEC O157: H7 demonstrated that intimin is needed for colonization, A/E lesions, and disease in cattle. These results suggest that experiments to determine if intimin-based vaccines reduce O157:H7 levels in cattle are warranted.

Is Soil Temperature Better Than Air Temperature For Predicting Winter Wheat Phenology?, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wallace Wilhelm
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
In predicting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) phenology, logic suggests that basing thermal unit accumulation on near-surface soil temperature should give a better representation of shoot apex thermal unit accumulation than air temperature until internode elongation raises the apex above the soil surface. A study was undertaken to determine if predictions of winter wheat phenology are improved when based on measured near-surface soil temperature rather than air temperature. Air temperature 1.5 m above the soil surface and soil temperature at crown depth (the position of the shoot apex before stem elongation) were collected for 23 site-years across the U.S. Central …

We examined the ability of a soil bacterium, Agrobacterium radiobacter J14a, to degrade the herbicide atrazine under a variety of cultural conditions, and we used this bacterium to increase the biodegradation of atrazine in soils from agricultural chemical distribution sites. J14a cells grown in nitrogen-free medium with citrate and sucrose as carbon sources mineralized 94% of 50 μg of [14C-U-ring]atrazine ml-1 in 72 h with a concurrent increase in the population size from 7.9 x 105 to 5.0 x 107 cells ml-1. Under these conditions cells mineralized the [ethyl-14C]atrazine …

Returning crop residue improves water conservation and storage, nutrient availability, and crop yields. We have little knowledge, however, of the residual impacts of crop residues on soil and crop production. We hypothesized that residual impacts of crop residues vary with the amount of residues used. A 10-yr study near Lincoln, NE, evaluated the residual effects of an earlier 8-yr study of various crop residue amounts on crop growth and selected soil properties. From 1978 through 1985, crop residues were returned at 0,50, 100, and 150% of the quantity produced by the previous crop (averaging 0 to =6 Mg ha-1 …

Localization Of Sodium, Potassium-Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Cerebral Cortex Of Developing Rats, Maki Ujiie
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Active transport via Na+, K+-ATPase plays an important role in establishing and maintaining proper ionic gradient across all mammalian cell membranes. A strict regulation of Na+, and K+ ion levels is especially important in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes. Inhibition of the enzyme is associated with several pathological conditions and has serious detrimental effects on cerebral cortical cells. Yet the enzyme appears to be limited in amount and distribution in newborn rats. In this study, Na+, K+- ATPase expression and distribution in early postnatal rats were studied …

A New Tribe, Genus, And Species Of Limnichid Beetle, Woolridgeus Perforatus, From Malaysia (Coleoptera: Limnichidae: Wooldridgeini), Paul J. Spangler
Insecta Mundi
A new tribe is established in the Limnichidae, Limnichinae, for a new genus and species, Wooldridgeus perforatus, from Sabah, Malaysia. Two autapomorphic characters distinguish Wooldridgeini from the two other tribes of the subfamily Limnichinae; 1) the mesotarsus and metatarsus join their respective tibia ventrally (medially) and preapically instead of the usual apical only connection and 2) a large pore, presumed to be an opening of a prothoracic gland, is present on each hypomeron. Distinguishing characters are illustrated by scanning electron micrographs and line drawings. A key to the three tribes included in the Limnichinae is provided.

Nebraska Bird Review
Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has sponsored annual "Christmas bird counts" during the two-week period encompassing Christmas; and as a result, long-term data on winter bird populations have accumulated, especially for some locations. The first two such counts in Nebraska were made in 1909 and in 1912 in Lincoln. While similar counts were made in Omaha from 1909 to 1911, no further counts were conducted elsewhere in the state until the 1940's. Beginning in 1947 and continuing to the present, an unbroken series of counts were made in Lincoln, usually by members of the University Place Bird Club, the …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP)-dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) utilizes high-energy phosphate present in PEP to drive the uptake of several different carbohydrates in bacteria. In order to examine the role of the PTS in the physiology of Listeria monocytogenes, we identified the ptsH and ptsI genes encoding the HPr and enzyme I proteins, respectively, of the PTS. Nucleotide sequence analysis indicated that the predicted proteins are nearly 70% similar to HPr and enzyme I proteins from other organisms. Purified L. monocytogenes HPr overexpressed in Escherichia coli was also capable of complementing an HPr defect in heterologous extracts of Staphylococcus aureus ptsH …

Identification Of The Gene Encoding The Alternative Sigma Factor ΣB From Listeria Monocytogenes And Its Role In Osmotolerance, Lynne A. Becker, Mehmet Sevket Cetin, Robert W. Hutkins, Andrew K. Benson
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Listeria monocytogenes is well known for its robust physiology, which permits growth at low temperatures under conditions of high osmolarity and low pH. Although studies have provided insight into the mechanisms used by L. monocytogenes to allay the physiological consequences of these adverse environments, little is known about how these responses are coordinated. In the studies presented here, we have cloned the sigB gene and several rsb genes from L. monocytogenes, encoding homologs of the alternative sigma factor σB and the RsbUVWX proteins, which govern transcription of a general stress regulon in the related bacterium Bacillus subtilis. …

Feeding Preferences Of A Generalist Salt-Marsh Crab: Relative Importance Of Multiple Plant Traits, Steven C. Pennings, Thomas H. Carefoot, Erin L. Siska, Margo E. Chase, Teresa A. Page
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Few studies have evaluated the relative importance of multiple plant traits to herbivore diet choice, especially with an experimental approach. Moreover, although circumstantial evidence points to plant toughness and silica content as important deter- minents of diet choice, few studies have experimentally demonstrated that these factors actually deter feeding by herbivores. We examined feeding preferences of a generalist salt- marsh crab, Armases cinereum, for all the common angiosperms in its habitat. We took an experimental approach to evaluating the importance of toughness, secondary chemistry, silica, salt, and protein in determining feeding preferences. Consumption of plants by Armases in two experiments …

Developmental Regulation Of A Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor Controls Postembryonic Cell Cycle Progression In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Yang Hong, Richard Roy, Victor Ambros
Dartmouth Scholarship
C. elegans cki-1 encodes a member of the CIP/KIP family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, and functions to link postembryonic developmental programs to cell cycle progression. The expression pattern of cki-1::GFP suggests that cki-1 is developmentally regulated in blast cells coincident with G1, and in differentiating cells. Ectopic expression of CKI-1 can prematurely arrest cells in G1, while reducing cki-1 activity by RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) causes extra larval cell divisions, suggesting a role for cki-1 in the developmental control of

Agonist-bound heptahelical receptors activate heterotrimeric G proteins by catalyzing exchange of GDP for GTP on their α subunits. In search of an approximation of the receptor-α subunit complex, we have considered the properties of A326S G(iα1), a mutation discovered originally in G(sα) (Iiri, T., Herzmark, P., Nakamoto, J. M., Van Dop, C., and Bourne, H. R. (1994) Nature 371, 164-168) that mimics the effect of receptor on nucleotide exchange. The mutation accelerates dissociation of GDP from the α(i1)β1γ2 heterotrimer by 250-fold. Nevertheless, affinity of mutant G(iα1) for GTPγS is high in the presence of Mg2+, …
Strategies For Sustainable Economic Development, Duane Olsen
Strategies For Sustainable Economic Development, Duane Olsen
Cornhusker Economics
During a conference highlighting "sustainable Communities," Margaret Thomas presented a paper based upon a 1994 research project designed to explore economic development strategies that would increase local prosperity and also protect the environment and protect natural resources. She described the economy and ecology as two sides of the same coin and proposed reconsidering human systems and industrial systems in the light of these two natural laws: 1) resources are to be used no faster than they are replenished, and 2) matter is ultimately recycled for reuse in biological or physical systems.

Using 43 years of Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data: Set and related data for the period 1950-1992, an examination is made into the regional dependence of ocean-atmosphere coupling in relation to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The cross correlation between sea surface temperature (SST) and sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies over the global tropics shows two patterns of significant negative correlation consistent with a local hydrostatic response of SLP to SST: (1) the eastern Pacific, where the correlation is symmetric about and largest on the equator, and (2) the western Pacific, where symmetric regions of-negative correlation are found off the equator, separated …
