The Role Of Fire In The Regeneration Of Table Mountain Pine In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Gregory L. Sanders Aug 1992

The Role Of Fire In The Regeneration Of Table Mountain Pine In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Gregory L. Sanders

Masters Theses

Table Mountain pine (Pinus pungens Lam.) is highly intolerant, serotinous-coned species endemic to the Appalachian Mountains. Before it can successfully be regenerated, three conditions must occur--(1) heat must be present to open its serotinous cones, (2) seed must fall on mineral soil, and (3) the existing forest canopy must be removed in to expose seedlings to full sunlight. These conditions are only met in the advent of fire.

This study was conducted in stands of Table Mountain pine that were burned by wildfires to see which burning conditions best regenerate the species. It showed that the best regeneration occurred …

Diversity Among Rhizobia Effective With Robinia Pseudoacacia L, Janet Mccray-Batzli, William R. Graves, Peter Van Berkum Jul 1992

Diversity Among Rhizobia Effective With Robinia Pseudoacacia L, Janet Mccray-Batzli, William R. Graves, Peter Van Berkum

William R Graves

The diversity of rhizobia that form symbioses with roots of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), an economically important leguminous tree species, was examined by inoculating seedling root zones with samples of soil collected from the United States, Canada, and China. Bacteria were isolated from nodules, subcultured, and verified to be rhizobia. The 186 isolates varied significantly in their resistance to antibiotics and NaCl, their growth on different carbohydrates, and their effect on the pH of culture media. Most isolates showed intermediate antibiotic resistance, the capacity to use numerous carbohydrates, and a neutral to acid pH response. Isolates had greater similarity …

Distribution And Ecological Significance Of On-Farm Bushland Remnants In The Southern Wheatbelt Region Of Western Australia, F Mollemans, G Beeston Jul 1992

Distribution And Ecological Significance Of On-Farm Bushland Remnants In The Southern Wheatbelt Region Of Western Australia, F Mollemans, G Beeston

Soil conservation survey collection

The Southern Wheatbelt Region Remnant Vegetation Survey was funded by the Save the Bush program, and aimed at surveying pieces of on-farm remnant vegetation in the "Great Southern" of Western Australia. At the outset a total of 13 shires were selected for survey, namely: Broomehill, Corrigin, Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kent, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Narrogin, Tambellup, Wagin, Wickepin, Woodanilling. However, time constraints (available funding indicated a time frame of 40 weeks for the project to be completed) meant that subsequently Kent and Lake Grace shires (two of the largest) had to be dropped from the survey to allow for proper completion …

Die Konsequenzen Eines Lebens Im Druckbehälter. Biotheoretische Implikationen Der Organisation Pflanzlicher Organismen [The Consequences Of Living In A Pressure Pot. Biotheoretical Implications Of The Organismic Architecture Of Plants], Winfried Peters, Hubert Felle

Winfried S. Peters

Growing Soybean Varieties From Multiple Maturity Groups Can Reduce Yearly Yield Volatility, Todd W. Pfeiffer Jun 1992

Growing Soybean Varieties From Multiple Maturity Groups Can Reduce Yearly Yield Volatility, Todd W. Pfeiffer

Agronomy Notes

In the Kentucky Soybean Performance Test program, varieties of maturity groups (MG) 3, 4 and 5 are tested to provide information on their relative yields. The difference in maturity between the earliest and the latest maturing variety in the test in any year is approximately 30 days. In general, although some regional differences appear, the long-term state-wide and within region yield of the different maturity groups (average yield of a 11 varieties in a maturity group) is equal (Table 1). As I've inspected results from the Kentucky Soybean Performance Tests for the last decade, it appeared that some of the …

Arkansas Rice Research Studies 1991, B. R. Wells

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

The research reports in this publication represent one year of results; therefore, these results should not be used as a basis for longterm recommendations. Several research reports in this publication dealing with soil fertility also appear in Arkansas Soil Fertility Studies 1991, Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series 421. This duplication is the result of the overlap in research coverage between the two series and our effort to inform Arkansas rice producers of all the research being conducted with funds from the rice check-off.

Book Review: Genetically Engineered Organisms: Benefits And Risks, Anne K. Vidaver Jun 1992

Book Review: Genetically Engineered Organisms: Benefits And Risks, Anne K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

In the continuing debate on the introduction into the environment of genetically modified organisms, particularly those modified by recombinant DNA, there are few books suitably written for policymakers, the lay public and scientists in other fields. This book describes the current state of the science and art of genetic engineering, potential uses (particularly outside the laboratory), and the benefits that can be expected. It is particularly pertinent for examining potential risk and management of risk from the perspective of the United Kingdom.

Trends In Cropland Acreage And Fertilizer Use In Kentucky Since 1980, Kenneth L. Wells Jun 1992

Trends In Cropland Acreage And Fertilizer Use In Kentucky Since 1980, Kenneth L. Wells

Agronomy Notes

Cropland acreage and patterns of fertilizer use varied considerably during the period 1980-1991. Variation in cropland acreage is largely related to commodity prices, available markets, land ownership patterns, and government programs. Patterns of fertilizer use are affected by cropland acreage, the nature of the fertilizer supply industry in Kentucky, weather, and improved efficiency in use of time and labor by farmers. The situation in the early 1990's is different than it was in 1980, and the following discussion highlights changes that have taken place. Fertilizer use data are those reported by the University of Kentucky's Division of Regulatory Services in …

Dna Extraction From Preserved Trout Tissues, D. K. Shiozawa, J. Kudo, R. P. Evans, S. R. Woodward, R. N. Williams

Great Basin Naturalist

We have adapted techniques developed for the extraction of DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-imbedded human tissues for use on preserved fish tissues. DNA was successfully extracted and the d-loop region of mitochondrial DNA was amplified with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The sequences of the amplified DNA from preserved and modern samples were identical. These techniques were also applied to fin tissue treated with a variety of preservatives. Extraction of DNA from ethyl alcohol and air-dried fin tissues gave yields equivalent to those from frozen tissues. Extraction of DNA from preserved museum specimens of rare or extinct taxa could significantly increase …

Response Of Central Plains Taligrass Prairies To Fire, Fertilizer, And Atrazine, Robert A. Masters, Kenneth P. Vogel, Robert B. Mitchell

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Tallgrass prairies are an important forage resource in the eastern Central Great Plains. The effect of spring burning, fertilization, and atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N'-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine- 2,4-diamine] on standing crop of selected herbaceous species and categories of vegetation was determined in 6 tallgrass prairie environments located near Lincoln and Virginia, Neb., from 1987 through 1989 and 1 site near Bloomfield, Neb., in 1987. The grasslands were in good to excellent condition at the time these studies were conducted. Portions of each site were burned in mid-to late spring, atrazine was applied at a rate of 2.2 kg a.i. ha-1 in late April to …
