Furniture Production And The Forest Resources Of Southwest Mississippi, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1989

Furniture Production And The Forest Resources Of Southwest Mississippi, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

The furniture industry has become a dominant industry in Mississippi. Furniture producers employ over 22,000 people in the State and directly account for more than 10 percent of all manufacturing employment, up from just over 5 percent in 1963.

The U.S. Household Furniture Industry: Adapting To Changing Times., Brian A. Doherty, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

The U.S. wood household furniture industry has adapted to change in many ways in recent years. The industry has grown steadily since the 1982 recession, and has been shifting to the U.S . South and Southeast. Although California has also become prominent in furniture production, many recent factors indicate geographic shifts away from the state, particularly in wood furniture production. The household furniture industry has also adapted and continues to adapt to factors which have increased the globalization of trade in all products. Foreign competition has resulted in mergers and consolidation in the U.S. household furniture industry, and has also …

Research Report No. 23, Environmental Factors Influencing Diameter Development Within East Texas Loblolly Pine Plantations, Pilis Malim Jan 1989

Research Report No. 23, Environmental Factors Influencing Diameter Development Within East Texas Loblolly Pine Plantations, Pilis Malim

Informal Project Reports

An assessment of the role of various environmental fa::tors on the development of four measures of diameter--minimum, arithmetic mean, quadratic mean and maximum- -was conducted for lob lolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) plantations in East Texas. Of 12 environmental f~tors analyzed, only slope percent, two measures of non- planted vegetation Md surface soil pH significantly influenced diameter development.

River Birch (Betula Nigra L.) Forest Communities In Cass And Mason Counties, Illinois, Charles Anthony Uhlarik Jan 1989

River Birch (Betula Nigra L.) Forest Communities In Cass And Mason Counties, Illinois, Charles Anthony Uhlarik

Masters Theses

During the fall of 1988 and the spring of 1989, four stands of river birch (Betula nigra L.) were surveyed in Cass and Mason Counties, Illinois. All study areas were divided into quadrats 25 m on a side (0.154 acres) and the maximum number of quadrats were placed to completely survey each forest. The relative density, relative dominance, and importance value was calculated for each species (dbh greater than 10 cm) in each forest area. Also, seedlings (less than 2.5 cm dbh) and saplings (2.5-10.0 cm dbh) were recorded in each area. River birch is the dominant overstory …

Arkansas' Incendiary Wildfire Record: 1983-1987, Richard A. Kluender, L. C. Thompson, R. J. Mcfarland, D. M. Steigerwald Jan 1989

Arkansas' Incendiary Wildfire Record: 1983-1987, Richard A. Kluender, L. C. Thompson, R. J. Mcfarland, D. M. Steigerwald

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

All wildfire reports from lands protected by the Arkansas Forestry Commission for the calendar years 1983 through 1987 were studied. The number of wildfires steadily increased from 2,185 in 1983 to 4,150 in 1987, burning a total of 27,146 hectares in 1987. Incendiarism on forested lands in 1987 comprised 77% of the total fires and 84% of the area burned. Incendiarism was responsible for 40% of all fires and 60% of the area burned in 1983, but increased to 54% of all fires and 69% of the area burned in 1987. In 1987, 80% of all incendiary fires on industry …

Trees In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, C S. Peek, Richard Silberstein Jan 1989

Trees In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, C S. Peek, Richard Silberstein

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The peel-Harvey catchment has been the focus for an intensive research and extension programme to reduce phosphorous run-off flowing into the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary, while maintaining agricultural productivity.

One of the proposed management strategies is to plant large areas of trees on the catchment's leaching sands. Farmers would be encouraged to take this option if growing trees was at least equal, in financial return, to the present agricultural land uses.

Preliminary data indicate that growing Eucalyptus globulas (Tasmanian bluegum) for woodchipping may be at least as profitable as agriculture. Tree plantations also have the added potential to reduce …

Understory Changes Following A Prescribed Burn In A Central Illinois Oak-Hickory Forest, Charity Rae Hilchen Jan 1989

Understory Changes Following A Prescribed Burn In A Central Illinois Oak-Hickory Forest, Charity Rae Hilchen

Masters Theses

The understory of Baber Woods, Edgar County, Illinois, was surveyed from April to September, 1988, following a low intensity fall burn in November, 1987. From plots sampled in the spring, summer and fall, differences in the composition of the herbaceous and woody components between the burn and control areas were determined. The herbaceous component of the burn area was found to compose a significantly higher percentage (X2 . 05 , 2 =12.49) of the importance values (IV) over all the sampling periods. Acer saccharum was found in significantly lower frequency (X2 . 05 , 2 =24.8) in the …
