Plybond Strength Development Of Secondary Fiber Using The Marine Polymer Chitosan, Christopher G. Sinkovitz
Plybond Strength Development Of Secondary Fiber Using The Marine Polymer Chitosan, Christopher G. Sinkovitz
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate plybond strength development of secondary fiber by the addition of the marine polymer chitosan.
The chitosan was applied to refined, lightly refined and unrefined pulp suspensions. Two-ply handsheets were produced with addition levels of .5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 percent chitosan based on fiber weight.
Results indicate that addition of chitosan to two-ply handsheets significantly increased plybond strength from 30 to 120 percent depending on furnish and degree of refining. It was also determined that maximum strength values of selected tests occurred at approximately the two percent addition level of chitosan. …
Effects Of The Degree And Type Of Sizing On The Dyeing Of Paper, J. Pease
Effects Of The Degree And Type Of Sizing On The Dyeing Of Paper, J. Pease
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A study was made comparing papers dyed in a rosin/alum sized system to papers dyed in two alkaline sized systems. The alkaline sizes chosen were alkyl ketene dimer and alkenyl succinic anhydride. The dye types studied were acid, basic, anionic direct, and cationic direct. The degree of sizing was varied for each sizing type to see if the amount of sizing would effect dye retention. The papers dyed with anionic and cationic direct dyes and the basic dye were not significantly effected by sizing type of sizing degree. The direct dyes did give a lighter shade when the rosin size …

Characterization Of Kpni Interspersed, Repetitive Dna Sequence Families And Their Association With The Nuclear Matrix, Joseph A. Chimera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The KpnI, 1.2 and 1.5 kb families of interspersed repetitive DNAs from the African green monkey genome were isolated and characterized. Each family contains three populations of segments based on their sequence lengths and susceptibility to cleavage by the restriction enzymes KpnI and RsaI. The first population contains the smallest segments which are susceptible to both KpnI and RsaI cleavage and have fragment lengths of 1.2 kb (1.2 kb family) and 1.5 kb (1.5 kb family) respectively. The members in this population are referred to as KpnI-sensitive segments. The second population contains longer segments (> 2 kb) which represent fusions …
Sulphonation Of Tmp Fibers, Alfonso Bello
Sulphonation Of Tmp Fibers, Alfonso Bello
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Paper made from TMP fibers offers good opacity and stiffness, but its use is limited because of its low strength. Chemical post-treatment of TMP offers possibilities of improving strength. Sulphonation of lignin appears to be the most economically feasible treatment. This thesis was oriented toward finding out if sulphonation of TMP fibers would improve the strength properties of TMP handsheets. Southern pine TMP fibers were treated with sodium sulfite (Na2SO3). The chemical concentration to be used was between 3-27% in alkali solution between pH 7-9. The temperature was between 90°-150°C. Pulp was consistency was 10%. Handsheets …
The Effects Of Temperature And Ph In Flotation Deinking Of Ultraviolet-Cured Inks, Jeffrey A. Downing
The Effects Of Temperature And Ph In Flotation Deinking Of Ultraviolet-Cured Inks, Jeffrey A. Downing
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Since 1974, the use of ultraviolet-cured inks and coatings has become popular with the printing industry. Unfortunately for the deinking industry, removal of these inks is difficult using conventional methods in the U.S. Theory and laboratory work suggests these special inks may be removed using the flotation process.
It was discovered that the optimum flotation cell temperature for UV-cured inks is not significantly different than the optimum temperature for normal emulsifiable inks. However, optimum cell pH was found to be different between the two inks, and most effective at low pH for UV-cured ink.
Integrated Deinking System, Gregory A. Murray
Integrated Deinking System, Gregory A. Murray
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
This project concentrated on the development and subsequent results of an integrated deinking system. Although the chemistry and basic principles are quite different, a few European companies are successfully combining the two·systems by taking advantage of the differences.
Advantages of an integrated system over the conventional type included higher brightness, lower ash content and decreased sensitivity to particle size.
The experiment consisted of two different two-stage deinking systems. Each system was run twice; once with a sodium-precipitate chemistry and once with a calcium precipitate chemistry.
The system with first stage flotation, second stage washing and sodium chemistry was determined to …
The Effect Of Temperature On The Emulsification Of Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride, Steven S. Riegsecker
The Effect Of Temperature On The Emulsification Of Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride, Steven S. Riegsecker
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The objective of this study is to look at the effect of starch temperature on the emulsification of ASA. Historical information was limited, but it was discovered that an emulsion particle size range of 1-2 microns would give optimum size results.
A continuous emulsification apparatus was constructed using a glass venturi and power syringe to emulsify the starch and ASA. The basic conclusions drawn from the experiment were that the starch temperature did have an effect on the final sizing characteristics of the sheets. It was also possible to correlate a visual inspection of the emulsions with the final test …
Refiner Peroxide Bleaching, Sharon E. Perkins
Refiner Peroxide Bleaching, Sharon E. Perkins
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Refiner peroxide bleaching trials were carried out at the Abitibi-Price Research pilot plant using a Sunds-Defibrator CD300 pilot-scale refiner. Results show that, at the pilot scale, blowline addition of bleach liquor gives better brightness gains than addition in the refining zone. Using this technique, brightness gains equivalent to tower bleaching can be obtained when the bleaching parameters are properly controlled. The most important factors were post-refiner retention time and temperature, and the alkali charge in the bleach liquor. These three factors were shown to be highly interdependent. Refining pressure (temperature) was shown to have little effect on brightness gain in …

Methylphenidate Effects On The Learning And Performance Of Four Hyper Active Children, Paul James Yoder
Dissertations
The effects of methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin) on the learning and performance of four hyperactive children were evaluated using a repeated acquisition procedure with both learning and performance components. Three dosages of methylphenidate plus a placebo were evaluated under double-blind experimental conditions. Dosages treated included each subject's therapeutic dosage, a dosage 5 milligrams higher, and a dosage 5 milligrams lower. Methylphenidate produced no effect on either the number of errors per session or on the rate of responding across the range of dosages tested suggesting that the medication neither facilitated nor impaired learning or performance. Data were also collected on social …
History And Distribution Of Brook Trout In The Appalachian Region Of Tennessee, Rick Dwain Bivens
History And Distribution Of Brook Trout In The Appalachian Region Of Tennessee, Rick Dwain Bivens
Masters Theses
Brook trout (Salevlinus fontinalis) populations have been declining in the southern Appalachians and especially in Tennessee since 1900. To assess the loss of range of this southern trout, various agencies have inventoried most of the major trout streams in Tennessee over the past 10 years. To date, however, these surveys have remained disjunct and in some cases overlapping.
Survey reports and field data of brook trout inventories made from 1974 to 1984 were examined to determine the current distribution in Tennessee. Brook trout currently inhabit 275.6 kilometers in 135 streams found in eight east Tennessee counties. Brook trout …
Regurgitation By The Face Fly, Musca Autumnalis Degeer, Russell E. Coleman
Regurgitation By The Face Fly, Musca Autumnalis Degeer, Russell E. Coleman
Masters Theses
Face flies normally began regurgitating within 10 minutes after feeding, and continued for periods of up to 240 minutes. Almost 100 percent of flies fed a concentrated (4.8%) solution of trypticase-soy broth were observed regurgitating. The deposition of droplets onto a substrate was almost never observed, indicating that the regurgitation is not analogous to vomiting. The droplet exuded contained from five to ten percent of the food consumed, with the crop the source of the fluid. The crop is also the most likely destination of the regurgitated materiel. The purpose of this phenomenon is still not clear. However, the fluid …

The Role Of The Salivary Glands In Uptake Of Fluoride In Teeth And Bone, Robin E. Vance
The Role Of The Salivary Glands In Uptake Of Fluoride In Teeth And Bone, Robin E. Vance
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The cariostatic capability of fluoride is generally recognized, in addition, it may also have a beneficial effect on bone. Fluoride is thought to exercise its cariostasis through a local effect on teeth, however, the possibility exists that fluoride exerts its action through a systemic mechanism. Fluoride uptake by rat teeth and its effectiveness as a cariostatic substance was studied in parotidectomized, submaxillariectomized, and totally sialoadenectomized animals (both parotid and submaxillary glands removed). The uptake of fluoride in bone was also quantitated for comparison purposes.
Rats were injected daily with 15 micromoles of fluoride dissolved in 0.1 ml saline. The rats …

A Quantitative Study Of The Distinctive Proteins Of The Eosinophil: A Comparison Of Normals And Eosinophilic Patients, James M. Olson
Honors Theses
Eosinophils have long been associated with parasitic and allergic diseases. Methods of procurement and purification of eosinophils in the last ten years have allowed intensive investigation into their components, properties, functions, and mechanisms (Gleich et al, 1982). The goals of this project are to separate eosinophils in blood samples taken from patients with eosinophilia and from normals based on density over distontinuous Metrizamide gradients; to determine quantitatively the levels of the three distinctive proteins of the eosinophil, specifically MBP, EDN, and ECP; and to compare the levels of these proteins found in eosinophils of patients with eosinophilia to the amounts …

Negative Cooperatively In The Binding Of 3-Aminopyridine Adenine Dinucleotide To L-Α-Glycero-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, David Wheeler
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase catalyzes the reversible reaction:
NAD+ + G-3-P ⇌ NADH + DHAP + H+
The enzyme is found in organisms from E. coli to man. The primary function of the enzyme varies from organism to organism. Depending on the metabolism of the organism, the enzyme may function primarily to generate G-3-P for lipid (in organisms with a highly aerobic biosynthesis metabolism), or it may function primarily to produce NAD+ to support glycolysis. Complex multicellular organisms possess tissue specific isozymes of GPDH whose kinetic parameters reflect the relative importance of G-3-P and NAD+ production in various …

The Phillipine Extended Jurisdiction: Its Cost And Benefits To Fishery Industry, Ricardo R. Federizon
Theses and Major Papers
The Philippines is one of the countries that has its significant relations to fisheries economically and culturally. The coastal waters of the Philippines support over a million fishermen whose only source of income is fishing that does not go far off-shore. Due to population pressure and increased demand for fish as a basic food supply and as a source of foreign revenue income, more and more fishermen fish at the waters that carry a limited resource. As a result, overfishing persists that has a social and economic implication. Conflicts arise among the fishermen. Management measures are not implemented successfully because …

Effects Of Dehydration On Hemoglobin Oxygen Affinity And Blood Cell Volume In Two Anurans, Andrew Christopher Zygmunt
Effects Of Dehydration On Hemoglobin Oxygen Affinity And Blood Cell Volume In Two Anurans, Andrew Christopher Zygmunt
Dissertations and Theses
Two aspects of possible adaptation in cardiovascular performance caused by increased plasma electrolytes were examined. Cells in anisotonic plasma may either act as osmometers or volume regulate. Blood flow rate is dependent upon cell viscosity, which in turn is a consequence of cell volume and membrane deform-ability. Cell volume changes which increase membrane deform-ability will thus potentially extend the limits of dehydration tolerance. It was found in R. catesbeiana and B. marinus that red blood cell is maintain constant volume during dehydration. Cells in vitro initially lose water, but then sodium, potassium and water move into the cell. Cell viscosity …
