The Use Of A Color Code System To Promote Compliance To Diet Information, Linda Rae Sparlin Jan 1988

The Use Of A Color Code System To Promote Compliance To Diet Information, Linda Rae Sparlin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The use of color coded prompts to influence students' food selections in choosing a balanced meal was investigated. Yellow, green, blue, and orange dots, representing the four major food groups, grains, fruit and vegetables, dairy, and meat respectively were displayed at the point-of-selection on food entree cards along the serving line of a college dining hall. Two grain servings, two fruit/vegetable servings, one dairy serving, and one meat serving, were suggested as the optimal combination for a balanced meal. The results indicated that the prompts, although noticed and understood by the majority of the students, did not significantly influence their …

A Comparison Of Body Size Between Sexes In Sorex Cinereus Cinereus, Patricia Marie Byrne Freund Jan 1988

A Comparison Of Body Size Between Sexes In Sorex Cinereus Cinereus, Patricia Marie Byrne Freund

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In many terrestrial mammals, males are generally larger than females. Since shrews are the smallest living terrestrial mammals, specimens of the shrew Sorex cinereus cinereus from north central Minnesota were studied to determine if size differences between sexes also occurred at this extreme. Comparisons were based on measurements of external body lengths and individual lengths of upper quadrant locomotive muscles. External differences showed neither males nor females were consistently larger. The results from analysis of variance on individual muscle lengths showed very few significant differences between individual muscles. Those muscles that did show a significant difference were not grouped In …

Determinants Of Small Rodent Distribution And Abundance In A Shrub-Steppe Ecosystem: Influences Of Seeds, Ants And Shrubs, Linda Suzanne Broome Jan 1988

Determinants Of Small Rodent Distribution And Abundance In A Shrub-Steppe Ecosystem: Influences Of Seeds, Ants And Shrubs, Linda Suzanne Broome

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study had two major objectives; firstly to test the hypothesis of ongoing competition for seeds between small rodents and harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex occidental is, in a cold desert ecosystem; secondly to elucidate how seed abundance and shrub cover influence the distribution and abundance of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus. The study area was a sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) dominated shrubsteppe in southwestern Wyoming. Responses of the small mammal community to ant removal and food addition were assessed on replicated study plots between September 1981 and September 1983. Food addition and shrub removal manipulations were continued from September 1983 …

Lymphocyte Subpopulations And Other Laboratory Parameters In Patients With The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) And Related Conditions, Steven C. Shivers

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), AIDS-Related Complex (ARC) and other high-risk individuals were evaluated for lymphocyte subsets and serum levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, complement C3 and C4, B2-rnicroglobulin, circulating immune complexes and antibodies to HIV (1). Patients with other immunologic diseases not related to AIDS and healthy individuals not at risk for AIDS were also included in the study. AIDS-related patients overall showed significant (p < .05) relative and absolute decreases helper/inducer T cells, and relative and absolute increases in suppressor/ cytotoxic T cells, resulting in dramatic decreases in helper to suppressor ratios. Relative decreases in total T cells and increases in B cells and natural killer (NK) cells were also observed in some AIDSrelated patients. Four patients not at risk for AIDS had borderline and possibly false positive HIV antibody results. Antibody levels in one of these patients gradually changed to negative after a period of a few weeks. AIDS-related patients overall were also found to have significant (p < .05) increases in serum levels of imrnunoglobulins, B2-microglobulin, and circulating immune complexes. Significant changes in serum levels of Complement C3 and C4 were not observed.

Variation In Female Somatic Condition And Its Relationship To Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Pisces: Poeciliidae), Richard Eugene Smith

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal and gestational variation in the somatic and reproductive condition of females was determined for two east-central Florida populations of the livebearing fish Poecilia latipinna. Females were sampled monthly between January 1985 and January 1986 at Badge Station (BDGST) and Titusville Ditch (TDTCH) study sites. In addition, collections were made at approximately 8 day intervals in April and August. Somatic condition was determined by calculating index values for dry weight (somatic tissue minus water), lipid, and protein from overall regression equations relating these components to female body size. Significant seasonal variation in somatic condition existed within the two study sites. …

Gibbon Classification : The Issue Of Species And Subspecies, Erin Lee Osterud Jan 1988

Gibbon Classification : The Issue Of Species And Subspecies, Erin Lee Osterud

Dissertations and Theses

Gibbon classification at the species and subspecies levels has been hotly debated for the last 200 years. This thesis explores the reasons for this debate. Authorities agree that siamang, concolor, kloss and hoolock are species, while there is complete lack of agreement on lar, agile, moloch, Mueller's and pileated. The disagreement results from the use and emphasis of different character traits, and from debate on the occurrence and importance of gene flow.

Quantitative Studies On Nodulation Competition Of Two Strains Of Bradyrhizobium Japonicum And Its Biological Control With A Bacteriophage, Jin Xiong

Masters Theses

Interstrain competition of Bradyrhizobium japonicum for nodulation of soybean (Glycine max) presents a serious problem to the field commercial inoculation practice. The more efficient, introduced strains are often outcompeted by the less efficient, indigenous strains. This study was conducted to determine if the competition could be effectively controlled by the massive introduction of a more efficient strain and/or the large scale reduction of a indigenous strain by the application of a bacteriophage specific to the indigenous one.

B. japonicum strain 61A123, common in Midwestern U.S. soils, and strain USDA110, representative of the strains used in commercial inocula, were chosen for …

Invertebrates Associated With The Pincushion Moss (Leucobryum Glaucum) And Underlying Soil, Timothy R. Leffler

Masters Theses

A faunal study of soil invertebrates collected from pincushion moss (Leucobryum glaucum) and underlying soil in a mixed deciduous forest of Charleston, Illinois, was performed because it was discovered that moss habitats have been largely overlooked by investigators.

The results from this study suggest that moss habitats provide a buffer area from the external physical environment, provide protection from predators, a place for oviposition and may be used as a food source. Twenty-seven orders of invertebrates were collected (66,023 individuals). Acarina (57.9%) and Collembola (37.9%) made up the majority of the invertebrate population. Three abiotic factors (temperature, moisture …

Callus Formation And Differentiation In Embryos Of The Coconut Palm (Cocos Nucifera L.), Jyoti Mangesh Desai Jan 1988

Callus Formation And Differentiation In Embryos Of The Coconut Palm (Cocos Nucifera L.), Jyoti Mangesh Desai

Masters Theses

Embryos of Cocos nucifera L. were allowed to develop on various agar based, plant tissue culture media. Environmental conditions, temperature, light intensity levels and photoperiod were regulated throughout the period of the experiment. The anatomy of commercially available embryos (excised from the "seed") and tissues that developed in culture (calli, roots and leaves) was determined. Prepared slides and tissues obtained in culture were photographed and printed. Callus, root and shoot formation were successful. However, "embryoids" which would have eventually led to free living plantlets were not obtained during this study. Successful regeneration of plantlets in culture would require improved techniques.

The length/frequency distribution curve constructed for the 358 dace collected determined Age class 0 to be dace less than 39mm, age classes I and II were indistinguishable because of overlap of fish lengths, and age class III was determined to be dace between 69 and 74mm. Other species encountered in abundance during this …

A Simple Solid-Phase Electrophoretic Procedure For The Separation Of Plasmid Dna, Linda Ann Simurra Jan 1988

A Simple Solid-Phase Electrophoretic Procedure For The Separation Of Plasmid Dna, Linda Ann Simurra

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A method was developed for extraction of plasmid DNA from bacterial cells embedded in agarose blocks. Cell - containing blocks were treated with various lysing reagents and inserted into the wells of an agarose gel. Upon electrophoresis the plasmid DNA migrated out of the embedding block and into the gel leaving intact chromosomal DNA in the well. This method was tested with various organisms and found to be effective for plasmid isolation. In comparison to "traditional" procedures, this new method is less tedious since chemical separation of plasmids is not required prior to electrophoresis. Also, a higher yield of plasmid …

Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe Jan 1988

Proliferation And Differentiation Of Mast Cell Progenitors, Daniel Lee Jarboe

Theses and Dissertations

We have identified a late, committed stage in the differentiation of the mast cell progenitor just prior to granulation. This mast cell-committed progenitor (MCCP) differs from the more primitive bone marrow mast cell progenitor in that it is able to proliferate and differentiate in the absence of interleukin-3 (IL-3) when cultured on a monolayer of embryonic skin or 3T3 fibroblasts. The MCCP can be harvested from the mesenteric lymph nodes of mice in their fourteenth day of infection with the rodent hookworm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and can be cloned in a methylcellulose culture system by supplementing the cultures with fibroblast-conditioned medium …

Phenotypic And Functional Characterization Of Ia+ And La- Sublines Of The Human Monocyte-Like Cell Line, U937, Coles Meredith Squire Jan 1988

Phenotypic And Functional Characterization Of Ia+ And La- Sublines Of The Human Monocyte-Like Cell Line, U937, Coles Meredith Squire

Theses and Dissertations

Sublines were derived from the U937 human monocytic cell line by limiting dilution techniques. Several of the sublines derived in this manner were found to constituitively express la, unlike most U937 cell lines previously examined. Thus the la+ and la- sublines were examined and characterized phenotypically and functionally. Morphologically the sublines, both la+ and la-, were found to be similar to the originally described U937 parent cell line. They were positive for production of non- specific esterase and expressed the HLA phenotype A(3,X), B(51,18), DR(2,X). The sublines were examined by immunofluorescence techniques with a large number of antibodies specific for …
