The demand for electric power in the United States is expected to double every 10 years. As hydroelectric power plant sites reach their full capacity, the demand for electricity will be met by the development of fossil fuel and nuclear power plants. The average thermal efficiency of nuclear power plants is presently about 32%. Therefore, a significant amount of heat is not utilized. For large power plants, the once-through cooling method, in which water is withdrawn from an adjacent body of water and returned after being heated, is the most common one. However, the great amount of heat discharged into …

Nearshore Bottom Currents Off Virginia Beach, Virginia, Morris L. Brehmer
Nearshore Bottom Currents Off Virginia Beach, Virginia, Morris L. Brehmer
Reports
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science instituted a study of the nearshore currents in the Atlantic Ocean off Virginia Beach, Virginia in December 1967 under Contract No. NAOSU P-68-1595 and continued under Contract DACW-65-69-C-0019 _through March 1970. The program was designed to determine the'net current patterns in the area and attempted to determine the physical parameters responsible. The net current patterns determined could then be utilized to determine the fate of dredge spoil material discharged from hopper dredges at a disposal site located in the vicinity of latitude 36 ° 48', longitude 75° 54', ·or 3 nautical miles offshore.

Prioriy Problems And Data Needs In Coastal Zone Oceanography Earth Observation Satellite Planning, John C. Munday Jr., Edwin B. Joseph, Robert J. Byrne, Thomas D. Wright
Reports
Coastal zone oceanographic problems and data needs have been defined for an oceanographic satellite. Problems are based on national and coastal zone priorities. Descriptions of the problems discuss the data needs and the expected utility of remote measurement. Data needs and resolution requirements are specified for surface and satellite measurement. Remote measurables are numerically ranked and evaluated. Coordination of the ERTS program with DOE is discussed.

VIMS Articles
This paper presents twenty-two species of nemerteans collected from various habitats in the York River, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia during the summer of l962. For the presentation of supplementary descriptions, this number includes those already reported from the Chesapeake area (Ferguson and Jones, 1949) , besides seventeen species not previously reported from this region and two newly described species.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The present shortage in the seed supply of all standard varieties of annual forage crops has created a special demand for information concerning their relative productivity and the possible use of substitute crops. This circular reports the yields secured from such crops at the Experiment Station, in an effort to help farmers reach a decision as to which crops should be grown this year for roughage, and which ones especially should have their seed supply increased for use in future years. Feed value and production costs as well as yields should be taken into consideration by the grower.
