A herbarium is the means by which the plant life of a large area is sampled and made conveniently accessible for study. Texas, with the largest area and one of the most varied floras of the United States, is botanically one of the most poorly known. Although its botanical exploration has been going on for more than a hundred and twenty-five years (it began in the summer of 1820, when Edwin James, surgeon of Major Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains, collected a few plants along the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle), the early collections were sent elsewhere, and …

In the introduction to the unabridged edition of his Study of History (1933), Toynbee comments on the invasion of the field of scientific investigation by the Industrial System: the working up of raw materials ("data") by many individual workers ("scientists") into finished products ("papers," or as so commonly designated, "the literature"), according to more or less standardized methods of mass production ("Research"). Since its introduction into the United States, Peganum Harmala L. has become designated as "African rue" and by a few other names (probably none of them used for the species in its native area.) Although it does not belong to the rue family, but occurs in northern Africa, it also grows in western Asia near the Mediterranean Sea, and in south­eastern Europe.

One of the many causes of personality problems is the feeling of rejection. It may result in the individual's becoming hypersensitive, resentful, or demanding, particularly if this experience has occurred in the impressionable age of youth. It is my purpose in this paper to set forth some of the symptoms and responses that occur in the individual who has this feeling, and what avenues are open in the treatment of such maladjusted individuals.

Injurious Effects From Contacts With Millipedes, Bruce W. Halstead, Raymond Ryckman

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

Millipedes are probably among the least mentioned of the so-called "medically important arthropods." Perusal of a number of the more common texts dealing with the entomological aspects of medicine (Belding, 1942: 600, Craig and Faust, 1940:511, Herms, 1946: 539, Mackie, Hunter, and Worth, 1945:515) revealed the concept, which is commonly believed, that millipedes are not capable of producing injurious effects. A recent experience of the senior author and additional investigation by both writers have prompted the writing of this paper in an effort to broaden scientific thinking regarding the medical significance of this animal.

This paper is a summary of a potato collecting expedition in 1947-48 to the highlands of south-central Mexico. It is concerned almost entirely with my field work in Mexico and includes my observations in relation to the occurrence and distribution of tuberous Solanums found in that country. At a later date a paper treating the identification and taxonomy of the collections made, as well as an evaluation of all other available herbarium specimens, will be published.

During twenty-five years' travel and plant-collecting in Texas, I have made a number of first collections in the state. Several of these, found in 1944, were briefly reported in Madrano (vol. 9, no. 2, April, 1947). It seems desirable to enlarge upon the brief statements of that paper, and to add notes on a few species found since 1944. The reports are listed in systematic order. Collections made prior to September, 1945, are deposited in the Tracy Herbarium of Texas A. & M. College; those made later are in the Herbarium of Southern Methodist University.

Since these craters and structures have at times been referred to the impact of giant meteorites it is well to consider the dynamics of these impacts. Ferdinand Rugel was one of the most interesting, but least known, of the botanists who worked in the southern United States before the Civil War. A German pharmacist deeply interested in botany, he came to Virginia from Switzerland in 1840. His plan was to collect plants, insects, and mollusks for R. J. Shuttleworth, a British botanist long a resident of Bern. At first Rugel intended to spend only a few years in the botanical exploration of the Southern Appalachians. In 1845, however, he married in eastern Tennessee (where he had fixed his residence), and here he remained the rest of …

Geology Of The Barnes Bridge Quadrangle In Dallas, Kaufman, And Rockwall Counties, Texas, Arthur Richards, Claude C. Albritton

The Barnes Bridge quadrangle, as shown on Figure 1, includes parts of Dallas, Kaufman, and Rockwall counties. It is bounded by the parallels 32° 45' and 32° 52' 30" N, and and by the meridians 96° 27' 30" and 966 35' W. The area approximates 60 square miles. Forney (population, 1300) extends into the southeastern corner of the quadrangle; Heath and Tripp are smaller settlements in Rockwall and Dallas counties respectively. U.S. Highway 80 crosses the southern part of the area. The roads in Dallas and Kaufman counties have hard surfaces except for local stretches across the floodplain of East …
