Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Vincentian Universities are engaged in service at so many levels and in so many ways, yet it is easy to move through our day unaware of the herculean efforts that our students and colleagues are engaged in. The Vincentian Universities seem rooted in the idea of service. For us, service is not another trend that we adopted, but rather it has always been part of our constitution. The work presented in this issue provides two direct examples of how we can better serve.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The main goal of this study is to elaborate and evaluate the physicochemical properties of the synthetic biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) powder: an associate compound of hydroxyapatite (HA): Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP): Ca3(PO4)2. The new compound BCP has two advantages: high bioactivity (HA) and fast biodegradation (β-TCP). The obtained powder of BCP was prepared by the precipitate method. XRD analysis confirmed the synthetic material contained both HA and β-TCP crystalline phases. SEM images showed that the small particles of HA attached to bigger particles of β-TCP in the structure morphology of BCP. The in vitro experiment was carried out …

Predicting The Catch Potential Of Skipjack Tuna In The Western And Central Pacific Ocean Under Different Climate Change Scenarios, Kuo-Wei Yen, Nan-Jay Su, Tooreka Teemari, Min-An Lee, Hsueh-Jung Lu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) constitute an important migratory species that contributes significantly to the economy and the global fishery industry. Skipjack tuna play a vital role in the marine ecosystem, particularly in tropical waters of the western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). However, climate change may affect the characteristics of fishery resources, leading to substantial reallocation and reduction of the biomass of this species in the WCPO. In this study, catch and effort data for skipjack tuna were collected from a purse seine fishery and subsequently analyzed in combination with remote-sensing environmental variables and simulation data from climate models under …

Impact Of Climate Change On Shihmen Reservoir Water Supply, Tai-Yi Chu, Jyun-Long Lee, Wen-Cheng Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This study evaluated the impact of climate change on the water supply of the Shihmen reservoir in northern Taiwan. Five downscaled general circulation models that represent the daily meteorological data of 2046-2065 were adopted. The future inflow of the Shihmen reservoir was estimated using the tank model. Subsequently, the water supply risk under the given demand and operating conditions was simulated and assessed. Compared with 2004-2011, the average annual precipitation of the Shihmen watershed in 2046-2065 is lower, particularly during the wet season (May-October). Therefore, the risk to the water supply will increase in the first cropping season (from March …

Risk Maps And Coastal Defense Criteria In Taiwan, Wei-Po Huang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Lee-Hsueh Lee Dec 2016

Risk Maps And Coastal Defense Criteria In Taiwan, Wei-Po Huang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Lee-Hsueh Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

To promote sustainable development, the Coastal Zone Management Act prescribes that coastal areas should be divided into two levels of protection zones. However, the complexity and variety of coastal defenses and land use cannot be described completely by using these two levels alone. Coastal risk maps, based on natural and manmade characters of a region, showing different degrees of vulnerability and hazard potentials, can aid in making decisions. In this study, the criteria for coastal protection and land use in terms of risk maps were adopted. A tentative risk map was presented for the northern Kaohsiung City coastal area, Southwest …

The Evolution Of Zero-Tolerance Policies, Stephanie D. Stahl Dec 2016

The Evolution Of Zero-Tolerance Policies, Stephanie D. Stahl

CrissCross

Most Americans today have a largely negative image of zero-tolerance policies (ZTP) enacted to stop and prevent violence in the United States school system. According to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Research and Improvement, zero-tolerance procedures are policies that mandate predetermined consequences or punishments for specific offenses (Walker). These policies specifically targeted actions considered violent and threatening, such as possession of a firearm or weapon. The concept of zero-tolerance policies was introduced into the education system during the 1980s as part of the failed War on Drugs as an attack on drug usage and violence in schools. …

The Labyrinth Of The Mind: The Psychology Of War Stories In Tim O’Brien’S Going After Cacciato, Rebekah Smith

CrissCross

This paper explores and analyzes the psychological reasons for storytelling by soldiers and veterans both during and after their deployments in war. It brings in multiple works by author-veterans as well as critical writing about these books with a specific focus on Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien. Paul Berlin, the novel's protagonist, imagines a fictional quest leaving Vietnam and going all the way to Paris following the desertion of a fellow soldier gone AWOL. He creates this journey to create order, find meaning, generate understanding, and focus on the good rather than the bad. This paper also explores the …

American Spring, Sam Mullooly, Tom Mullooly Dec 2016

American Spring, Sam Mullooly, Tom Mullooly

CrissCross

Composer's Notes

I composed American Spring during the 2015-2016 school year, my final year as an undergraduate at Illinois Wesleyan University, in connection with the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. This opera takes place mostly in April 1865, the year Richmond burned and Lincoln died, and deals with America’s feelings of pride and shame in war. The opera’s main character is Varina Davis, the wife of confederate President Jefferson Davis. Varina offers the 1860’s Southern perspective on slavery and the war, one glossed over in most readings of our history because it is so obviously repugnant …

Birthing Center Versus Hospitalized Birth, Nicolette Larsen Dec 2016

Birthing Center Versus Hospitalized Birth, Nicolette Larsen

CrissCross

There are many risks and benefits of giving birth at a birthing center versus a hospital. Determining the location of birth is an important decision, as women in the world today have many options of where to have their child. Hospitals and birthing centers are two places where medical professionals provide prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for the mother and fetus during this memorable time. While hospital nurses and physicians provide advanced medical care, birthing centers focus on holistic care of the family unit emphasizing mental, spiritual, and physical health. Doctors often perform cesarean sections (C-sections) for non-medical …

A Park Story, David Flowers, Evan Dolan Dec 2016

A Park Story, David Flowers, Evan Dolan

CrissCross

Composer's Note

A Park Story was written to be an honest and objective portrayal of the struggles that both characters experience throughout their collective story. Christopher and his mother both end up fighting two dominating perspectives of their identity: their family roles, and how they identify themselves. Their self-identities collide with each other in an irreconcilable manner; while both of them strongly desire the family bond they have, the mother’s convictions become the line that neither of them have any desire to cross.

Tracking The Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) Corridor And The Human-Wildlife Conflict In Selela Village, Nicole Chlebek, Laura Stalter Dec 2016

Tracking The Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) Corridor And The Human-Wildlife Conflict In Selela Village, Nicole Chlebek, Laura Stalter

CrissCross

The beastly journey of long-distance migration for the African Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) is important for upholding their connections between diminishing protected areas, especially in northeastern Tanzania. However, human development is encroaching into these corridors, creating a human-elephant conflict, which can ruin livelihoods of villagers, depending on the extent of conflict. This study focused on exploring the hypothesized human-elephant conflict on the Selela corridor, specifically in Selela village, as well as GPS (Global Positioning System) mapping evidence of elephant travel along the projected Selela elephant corridor connecting Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), to Selela Forest Reserve (SFR), and finally to …

Animals Aren’T Persons, But Is It Time For A Neologism?, Helen Steward Dec 2016

Animals Aren’T Persons, But Is It Time For A Neologism?, Helen Steward

Animal Sentience

Mark Rowlands argues that at least some animals are persons, based on the idea that (i) many animals have a property he calls “pre-reflective awareness,” (ii) the capacity for pre-reflective awareness is sufficient to satisfy the traditional Lockean definition of personhood, and (iii) satisfaction of the traditional Lockean definition of personhood is sufficient for being a person. I agree with (i) and can see that there is a persuasive case for (ii), but I think the case against (iii) blocks the conclusion that animals are persons. I suggest that we may need instead to coin a neologism in order to …

Effect Of Diet On Mortality And Larval Duration In Chrysodeixis Includens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Andrea Przygoda, Erin E. Barding, Margaret Smith Dec 2016

Effect Of Diet On Mortality And Larval Duration In Chrysodeixis Includens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Andrea Przygoda, Erin E. Barding, Margaret Smith

Georgia Journal of Science

Diet mediates many life history trade-offs and therefore is an important environmental component to consider. Because some organisms share food sources with humans, they encounter anthropogenic changes to their diet, such as genetically modified crops and chemical applications, which can contribute to additional complexity in their environment. To understand the effect of diet on the life history of the soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens, we exposed larvae to several different food sources, including genetically modified soybean leaves and the pesticide spinosad. Significant differences in larval instar duration and timing of larval mortality among treatments were observed indicating that type of diet …

Structural Study Of Some Lithium Borophosphate Glasses Using Density, Hardness And Infrared Spectroscopy, A. Nassar, E. Nabhan, Al-Sh. Ramadan

Al-Azhar Bulletin of Science

Glasses in the system [50Li 2 O-xB 2 O 3 -(50-x)P 2 O 5 ] (10 < x < 27.5), have been prepared by the meltquenching technique. Density, molar volume, hardness and Ft-IR spectroscopy have been employed to study therole of B 2 O 3 on the structure of the glass network. The results of density and hardness showed that bothincreased as P 2 O 5 is replaced by B 2 O 5 [as y was increased from 0.2 up to 0.4 where (y = B 2 O 3 /(B 2 O 3 +P 2 O 5 ))].After Y  0.4 both of them decreased. Infrared spectra reveal that with the replacement P-O-B bonds are presentat very low B 2 O 3 content and their relative amount increased within the whole range of B 2 O 3 . BO 4 tetrahedralgroups are predominant (~ 100%) up to 15 mole% B 2 O 3 . Then, the proportion of BO 3 units starts to appear.

Chemical Crosslinking Of Poly (Vinyl Alcohol)/ Poly Ethylene Glycol With Glutaraldehyde Nanofibers, M. El-Aassar, Mohamed Elnouby, Fatima Kamal, Nagwa Badawy, Shimaa Amer

Al-Azhar Bulletin of Science

Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/ poly ethylene glycol (PEG) with different concentration were prepared by electrospinning and chemically crosslinked using glutaraldehyde (GA) to improve the water resistance of nanofibers. The effects of the different concentration of PEG on the solution properties of PVA/PEG/GA blends and on the morphology of the resultant nanofibers were studied. The surface morphology and the average diameter of the blend nanofibers are dependent on initially added PEG concentrations. The effects of the glutaraldehyde on the morphology, average diameter, contact angle, mechanical properties and swelling properties of the PVA/PEG nanofibers were examined. The PVA/PEG/GA nanofiber mats were characterized …
