Isolation And Identification Of Soilborne Fungi In Fields Irrigated By Gap In Harran Plain Using Two Isolation Methods, Ayşe Di̇lek Azaz
Turkish Journal of Botany
The microfungal flora of field soils irrigated by the South-eastern Anatolia Project (GAP: Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi) in Harran Plain were investigated in terms of quality and quantity, using the soil dilution plate and soil washing methods. A total of 1690 microfungi were isolated from 105 soil samples. With the identification of these isolates, 109 species plus 16 different sterile fungi were identified. Sixty-two of these taxa were isolated through the soil dilution plate method, seven through the soil washing method, and 40 through both methods. The results indicate that ten of these species belong to Mucorales, four to Sphaeriales, one …

A Chemotaxonomic Approach To The Fatty Acid And Tocochromanol Content Of Cannabis Sativa L. (Cannabaceae), Eyüp Bağci, Ludger Bruehl, Kurt Aitzetmuller, Yasi̇n Altan
Turkish Journal of Botany
In this study, the fatty acid, tocopherol and tocotrienol composition in the seed oil of Cannabis sativa L., which is traded under the common name hemp seed oil, were determined by using GLC and HPLC techniques. While \alpha- linolenic, linoleic, oleic and palmitic acid were the main fatty acid components, \gamma - linolenic (18:3 n-6) and stearidonic acid (18:4 n-3) were found as unusual minor fatty acids in the seed oil. \gamma - linolenic acid is an important fatty acid used both as a healthy nutrient and as a therapeutic agent. The occurrence of this fatty acid in some plant …

In Vitro Clonal Propagation Of A Multipurpose Tree, Ziziphus Spina-Christi (L.) Desf., C. Sudhersan, J. Hussain
Turkish Journal of Botany
A simple and efficient protocol for the clonal micropropagation of Ziziphus spina-christi (L.) Desf., a multipurpose native tree species highly adapted to the harsh environmental conditions of Kuwait, has been established using shoot tips and stem nodal segments as explants. The explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium with and without growth regulators. The nodal segments and shoot tips isolated from the primary cultures were cultured on hormone-free MS media containing 100 mg/l myo-Inositol, 150 mg/l glutamine and 2.5% sucrose for plant growth and elongation. Shoots for multiplication were maintained on MS media with low concentrations of …

Isoenzyme Variation Of Esterase And Acid Phosphatase And Genetic Affinities Among Dasypyrum Villosum (L.) P.Candargy, Elytrigia Repens (L.) Nevski And Elymus Caninus (L.) L., Georgi Borisov Angelov
Turkish Journal of Botany
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was employed to study the isoenzyme variation of esterase and acid phosphatase in natural populations of Dasypyrum villosum (L.) P.Candargy, Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski and Elymus caninus (L.) L. Four similarity indices (SI, S, D, I_h) were calculated in an attempt to evaluate quantitatively genetic affinities among the species examined. Considering index D, the species D. villosum proved to be equally distant (D = 0.17 in both cases) from the species pair Et. repens and El. caninus. The nearly twice lower value of D for the comparison between Et. repens and El. caninus is an indication of …

A Study On The Occurrence Of Merismopedia Meyen (Cyanobacteria) Populations On The Littoral Sediments Of İzmit Bay (Turkey), Yelda Aktan, Güler Aykulu
Turkish Journal of Botany
In a previous study of epipelic diatoms on the littoral sediments of İzmit Bay (Marmara Sea, Turkey), which was carried out from March 1999 to September 2000, it was found that two Merismopedia Meyen species (Cyanobacteria) occurred frequently. In the present study, the seasonal variations of density and biomass of the Merismopedia species, which were dominant at certain times in the epipelic algal flora on the littoral sediments of İzmit Bay, were investigated. In addition, some physical and chemical parameters were measured. One of the species, Merismopedia glauca (Ehrenb.) Nägeli, was dominant in terms of cell numbers and frequency while …

Planktonic Diatom (Bacillariophyceae) Flora Of Sultan Sazlığı Marshes (Kayseri), Aydin Akbulut
Turkish Journal of Botany
This paper describes the planktonic diatom flora of the Sultan Sazlığı marshes, Kayseri. Samples were collected systematically from the marshes over a period of 1.5 years from three stations. The diatom flora of Sultan Sazlığı is rich in terms of species and varieties, which are similar to those from many parts of Turkey. A total of 75 taxa of diatoms were identified. The diversity of species at freshwater stations was higher, than that of the brackish water station. Genera such as Fragilaria Lyngb., Navicula, Gomphonema Ehrenb., Nitzschia Hassall, Epithemia Bréb. ex Kütz. were dominant in species numbers.

Germination, Growth And Biomass Accumulation As Influenced By Seed Size In Mesua Ferrea L., A. Arunachalam, M. L. Khan, N. D. Singh
Turkish Journal of Botany
Mesua ferrea L. was evaluated for its germination, seedling growth and biomass across four seed size classes. The production of two- and three-seeded fruits was high. The viability of the seeds was 58-81%. Germination was positively correlated with seed weight. Heavier seeds showed early and rapid germination. The contribution of leaves to total biomass yield was 27-60 % in 1-month old seedlings. Carbon content was also related with plant length and weight in the seedlings. The study concludes that the variations in seed size have a substantial influence on growth and biomass accumulation in Mesua ferrea. Such variation also helps …

Isozyme Variations In Some Aegilops L. And Triticum L. Species Collected From Central Anatolia, Mehmet Karcicio, Afi̇fe İzbirak
Turkish Journal of Botany
In this study the aspartate aminotransferase (AAT, E.C. 2.6.1.1), phosphoglucomutase (PGM, E.C. 5.4.2.2) and phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI, E.C. 5.3.1.9) isozyme patterns of nine different diploid and tetraploid wild wheat species belonging to the Aegilops L. and Triticum L. genera were analysed electrophoretically, using horizontal starch gel and non-denaturating polyacrylamide gel (only for AAT). All species were found to have three AAT isozyme zones (except for the AAT of Aegilops speltoides Tausch on starch gel) on both gels. While the migration distances of AAT-1 isozyme were similar, the AAT-2 and AAT-3 band patterns were different on both gels. A single PGI …

Taxonomy And Conservation Status Of Acantholimon Laxiflorum Boiss. Ex Bunge (Plumbaginaceae), Musa Doğan, Hayri̇ Duman, Gali̇p Akaydin
Turkish Journal of Botany
Acantholimon laxiflorum Boiss. ex Bunge (Plumbaginaceae), a local endemic species in Turkey, was subjected to taxonomic analysis in order to clarify its taxonomic status, because this species seems to have been wrongly treated and overlooked since it was first described by Boissier. The species is restricted to the east of Arsuz (C5 Hatay, Turkey) along dry riverbank, where it grows in rocky places on serpentine rocks. A full description and an illustration of the species are given, along with some additional information dealing with its ecology, phytogeography and conservation status.
