Turkish Journal of Botany

Different populations of epiphytic lichens were studied in a microsite in Lower Nahal Keziv, Western Upper Galilee, Israel, which is designated as an "Evolution Canyon" (EC) II. In all, 24 lichen species from 5 orders, 11 families, and 17 genera were registered, about one third of them (7 species) for the first time in Israel. Species richness was higher on the warmer, drier, climatically more fluctuating and biotically more heterogeneous south-facing slope (SFS). Most lichens of EC II were mesophytic and photo-indifferent species; however, humid and shaded habitats of the north-facing slope (NFS) and valley bottom (VB) were characterised by …

The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On The Contents Of Chlorophyll, Flavonoid, Anthocyanin And Proline In Capsicum Annuum L., Kobra Mahdavian, M. Ghorbanli, Khosrow Manochehri Kalantari Jan 2008

The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On The Contents Of Chlorophyll, Flavonoid, Anthocyanin And Proline In Capsicum Annuum L., Kobra Mahdavian, M. Ghorbanli, Khosrow Manochehri Kalantari

Turkish Journal of Botany

Although ultraviolet radiation is potentially harmful, it is an important component of terrestrial radiation to which plants have been exposed since invading land. Since then, plants have evolved mechanisms to avoid and repair UV radiation damage. Therefore, it is not surprising that photomorphogenic responses to UV-B and UV-C are often assumed to be adaptations to harmful radiation. Most of the compounds accumulated are directly involved in UV-B and UV-C protection: they are either efficient in filtering excess radiation or in scavenging radicals. In this study plants were grown for 5 weeks in controlled environment room. The plants were grown in …

Desert Rocks – A Habitat Which Supports Many Species That Were New To Science In The Last 40 Years, Avinoam Danin

Turkish Journal of Botany

Hard limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and granite constitute, under certain conditions, smooth-faced outcrops in desert areas of SW Asia. This habitat supports the most rare plant species in the desert including most of the desert endemics of Israel, Sinai, and Jordan. The smooth-faced outcrops efficiently contribute runoff water to the rock crevices and events when water is available for plant utilisation take place at a higher frequency than in the other habitats in the desert. In many sites plants are isolated and protected by impermeable rocks from competition from other plants. The rare and special plants found in this habitat include …

Mycota Of South-West Asia, Stephan Helfer Jan 2008

Mycota Of South-West Asia, Stephan Helfer

Turkish Journal of Botany

Fungi are indispensable components of the biota of any region. Their presence and distribution are of paramount importance to flora and fauna, and their ecological function may be responsible for the presence or absence of many other species, particularly plants. Database records on fungi from South-West Asia were consulted to estimate the completeness of mycological exploration of the region. Unsurprisingly, some groups are well represented in certain areas, whereas others are lacking from SW Asian data altogether. In this paper an attempt is made to prioritise both taxonomic and geographical focal points in order to maximise the use of resources …

Challenges Of In Situ Conservation Of Crop Wild Relatives, Vernon Hilton Heywood Jan 2008

Challenges Of In Situ Conservation Of Crop Wild Relatives, Vernon Hilton Heywood

Turkish Journal of Botany

Crop wild relatives (CWRs) will gain in importance as changing climates put both traditional and advanced cultivars under increasing stress, leading to a need for plant breeding to produce new varieties able to grow under the new climate regimes. Traditionally, the approach to the conservation of CWRs has been ex situ - the collection and maintenance of seed accessions in national, regional, and international germplasm banks, supplemented by field genebanks for species with recalcitrant seeds. More recently the need to maintain CWRs in their natural habitats (in situ) has been advocated. This is very different from on-farm conservation of traditional …

Floristic Diversity, Conservation Status And Economic Value Of Miniature Sacred Groves In Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, Southern Peninsular India, Selvamony Sukumaran, Solomon Jeeva, Appavoo Deva Sobhana Raj, Doraipandian Kannan

Turkish Journal of Botany

The plant diversity of southern peninsular India has recently been reduced to a great extent due to anthropogenic disturbance and environmental degradation. Disturbance was the major factor responsible for fragmentation of forest vegetation; as a result of this, there is a preponderance of small patches, some of them still preserved as sacred groves because of strong religious beliefs held by the indigenous people of this region. It is thought that one of the prime utilities of sacred groves is the protection and occasional supply of medicinal plants on a sustainable basis. Most of the medicinal plants were confined to these …
