The effect of some nutrients added to synthetic compost with wheat straw, on mycelium growth, yield and early ripe of Agaricus bitorquis (Quél.) Sacc. were investigated. The compost was prepared by fermentation and chemical disinfection methods. Corn flour, wheat flour, hen grain, soybean meal and sunflower seed hulls were used as additional nutrients. The experiments were made at the temperatüre 20-22°C and 80-90% relative humidity in the yield rooms. Freeliving Ciliates Of Pure And Soils Polluted Byconstituents Of Oil Lifting At Apsheron Peninsula, İlham Kh Alekperov

The data compiled during five-year-long investigation on the influence of drilling water and crude oil on specific composition, number and structure of the communities of free-living soil ciliates is presented. The vertical distribution of ciliates and their colonizing potential in the sterile soil monoliths placed in clean and polluted soils was studied on the basis of their survival and physiological responses. The changes in certain ciliate species were demonstrated by biotesting of the influence of various concentrations of drillinig water, crude oil and drillinig muds on these ciliates.

The Effect Of Calcium Concentration Of Water Onchloride Cell Density In Gill Of Brown Trout(Salmo Trutta L.) Larvae, Meti̇n Çalta

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effects of the calcium concentration on chloride cell (mitochondria-rich cell) density in the gills of brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) larvae were studied. For this purpose, animals were divided into 3 groups 2 weeks after hatching and each groups was exposed to different calcium concentrations of water for two weeks. The results showed that the number of chloride cells in gill arch epithelia of larval fish increased with decreased calcium concentration.This increase was statistically significant in the gills of larvae kept in zero-Ca 2+ freshwater (ZCWF) ( P< 0.001 ) and of those kept in low-Ca 2+ freshwater (LCFW) ( P< 0.05) in comparision with the gills of larvae kept in normal freshwater (NFW).

For the purpose of obtaining information about interphases between subunits of human serum albumin (HSA), a new tritium labelling method was adopted. The existence of linear dependence between accessible surface of amino acid residues and their specific radio-activity enabled to obtain information about qualitattive and quantitative amino acid composition of surface layer of protein globule and its large fragments. In this work sitotoxic and mutagenic effects Olive Oil Mill Effluent (OOME) on the root tips of Triticum aestivumL. were investigated. In this purpose, germination rate of seeds, mitotic division abnormalities and total protein amounts were evaluated. The seeds kept in various OOME concentrastions, it was determinated that germination rate decreased, whilst mitotic abnormalities and mitotic cell division frequency increased. Especially, the increased cell division frequency was of significance, almost several times higher than the control group. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were successfully used in discrimination of sexes in Nile tilapia fish ( Oreochromis niloticus) using linear discriminant function analysis. The results provide support for the view that major genetical sex determining factors exist in tilapia.

Germin, a molecular marker of wheat embryo germination, is a remarkably protease-resistant, apoplastic, homopentameric glycoprotein. Different forms of germin found to be related to various aspects of plant development have been discovered. Germins were determined in cereals, dicotyledonous angiosperms, gymnosperms and in a prosit, all these proteins are together called germin-like proteins due to their DNA sequence homology. There are no reports in the literature dealing with gram-positive cocci typing by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of extracellular proteins. In this study, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus warneri, Staphylococcus chromogenes, Micrococcus lysodeikticus and Micrococcus ssp. of the Micrococcaceae family, and Pediococcus halophilus, Streptococcus ssp. and Enterococcus faecalis of the Streptococcaceae family were characterized by SDS-PAGE of whole cell proteins (WCPs) and total extracellular proteins (TEPs). Comparison of SDS-PAGE of WCP profiles with banding patterns produced by that of TEPs provided additional criteria and characteristic banding patterns for the study of the characterization of gram-positive cocci. In this study, the composition and density of the benthic algae and seasonal variations of the benthic algae of Palandöken Pond were determined between September 1990 and September 1992. Samples were collected from two previously selected sampling sites. It was found that Bacillariophyta was the dominant benthic algal group in this pond. During our investigation a total of 160 taxa were identified and 135 them were composed of epipelic algae. The percentages of algal groups were as follows: Bacillariophyta 57%, Cholorphyta 11% and Euglenophyta5%. In this study, the monthly variation of blood glucose level of Capoeta tinca caught from in Çoruh Basin - Oltu Stream, between Augist 1995 and June 1996 was determined. It was determined that the average blood glucose level was 86.19±3.86 mg/dl in males and 83.58±3.77 mg/dl in females. The blood glucose level was highest (116.36±8.58 mg/dl) in April, and lowest (51.00±7.10 mg/dl) in June.

The effects of various concentrations (0.01, 1, 2mM) of spermine (Spm) on germination and some early growth parameters of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L. cv. Santafe) seeds were investigated in media containing different concentrations of NaCl (50, 100, 200mM). Regardless of its concentrations, application of Spm under non-saline conditions remained ineffective on germination percentage as well as on the early growth parameters studied (length of radicle, fresh and dry weights). The effect of heavy metals, namely mercury (Hg^{+2}), zinc (Zn^{+2}), nickel (Ni^{+2}) and cobalt (Co^{+2}), which were applied in the form of chloride salt, and that of lead (Pb^{+2}) and cadmium (Cd^{+2}) applied in the form of nitrate salt, on the pollen germination and tube growth were investigated on apples ( Malus sylvestris cv. We report here the development of hybrid cells producing monoclonal antibodies specific for two different steroid hormones with mixed immunization using hybridoma technology. BALB/c mice were immunized with a mixture of three steroid antigens: progesterone, estradiole and testosterone linked to bovine serum albumine. These mice were used for fusion. In the two fusion experiments, ELISA tests showed that among 645 wells only 2 hybrids reacted with progesterone (MAM 3C2, MAM 3E3) and one of them reacted specifically with estradiol (MAM 7H7). Thermomonospora fuscaBD25 produces relatively high levels of activity of \beta-xylosidase and \alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase. The aim of the work described in this study was to characterize some properties of \beta-xylosidase and \alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase produced by T. fusca BD25 when growing on oat spelt xylan as the main carbon and energy sources. The substrates p-NPX and p-NPA reacted with \beta-xylosidase and \alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase with specific activities of 4.01 U mg -1 protein and 0.35 U mg -1 protein, respectively. Crustacean waste product (CWP) generated from the fishing industry could be used in diets for rainbow trout as an alternative animal protein. Some experiments have been undertaken with penaid species, showing that it is possible to partially replace fish meal with CWP in penaid feeds. This study has been designed to assess whether CWP could be used to partially replace fish meal in diets for rainbow trout. In this study, over-produce esterase allele types dependent on organophosphate resistance in mosquitoes were determined by cellulose acetate gel electrophoresis in the human malaria vector species Anopheles sacharovi and Culex pipiens in Çukurova (Adana). We found A_2 and A_5 allele bands with some unknown and unidentified gel bands in some An. sacharovi field samples, of which some bands seemed to match with over-produce esterase. We identified A_2-B_2 allele types for all the Cx. pipiens samples collected in this study.

In this study, the feeding of Brachionus plicatilis with different single cell microalgae species, Tetraselmis chuii, Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri, Chlorella vulgaris and Rhinomonas reticulata which are used widely for rotifer culture was investigated. At the first stage of the study, B. plicatilis was fed a mixture of T. chuii, C. vulgaris, I. galbana and R. reticulata the densities of which were 130x104, 650x10^4, 260x10^4 and 130x10^4 cell/ml respectively. In this study, lactococcal strains isolated from raw milk and whey samples of different types of cheese produced without using industrial starter cultures in different regions of Turkey were tested for sensitivity to 22 lactic phages. In addition to the strain isolation materials, virulent lactic phages were also isolated from samples obtained from dairy plants using industrial starter cultures. 18 L lactis subsp. lactis strains out of 73 lactococcal strains were found to be resistant to all the phages. It was determined that the total phage resistance levels of the other 55 strains were between 18.18 and 90.90%.

Rooted cuttings of Çavuş (salt-resistant), Müşküle (salt-sensitive) and Sultani Çekirdeksiz (moderately salt-sensitive) grapevine cultivars, grown in perlite medium, were subjected to salt stress by irrigating them with 1/2 Hoagland nutrient solution including different NaCl concentrations (0.00, 0.50 and 0.75%). It was determined that stomatal conductance and transpiration were strongly inhibited in Müşküle and Sultani Çekirdeksiz with salt treatments, while these physiological activities were maintained with a controlled decrease in cv. The effects of N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR) on mice chromosomes and micronucleus induction were investigated in order to evaluate its genotoxic effects. Twenty 10-12 week old mice and 40 8- 10 week old male mice ( Mus musculus var. albinos) were used for chromosome analysis without sex discrimination and micronucleus tests respectively. The physical and chemical properties of the pond water were also determined. 99 taxa were determined in the phytoplankton and the proportions of them were as follows: Bacillariophyta 79%, Chlorophyta 10%, Cynophyta 6%, Euglenophyta 5%. The phytoplankton generally increased in the spring and early fall whereas in the summer and late fall it decreased. Physical factors had the greatest effect on phytoplankton growth.

The mutagenic effects of 2, 4, 5 tri-phenylimidazole and its nine different derivatives, which are aimed at producing medicine as a primary substance, were investigated by the Ames Salmonella/Microsome plate assay. The test compounds were directly effective, especially in the TA 98 strain. A relationship was found between the mutagenic effect and the positions of the methyl and methoxy groups.

In this study, the population structure and growth properties of Chalcalburnus mossulensis (Heckel, 1843) caught from Askale Region of River Karasu betwen February 1996 and January 1997 were examined. The age composition of population varied between I and VI ages, and the most abundant age group was the third age group (42.13%). The population was composed of 51.74% females and 48.26% males. The fork length and the body weights of males and females varied between 8.9-18.1 cm, 3.6-67.9 g and 8.5-18.5 cm, 5.1-79.5 g respectively. No statistical differences were determined in the effects of malt extract (ME) and corn strach (CS) doses on the vegetative development of mycelia (P>0.05). The mycelia in all gropus covered 9.0 cm agar plates in 9.0 days and some characteristic differences, development from (vertical or horizontal), cluster formation, tickening and tissue formations, were observed. The main goal was to standardize the FETAX (Frog Embryos Teratogenesis Assay: Xenopus) test. Since lithium ions are known to be teratogenic for embryos of many organisms, they were prefferred for our first standardization assay. Xenopus laevis embryos were exposed to lithium chloride (from 2x10 -4 to 6 x 10 -3 M concentrations) for 96 hours at 2-4 cell stages of development. Exposure to lower LiCl concentrations permitted larvae to survive and to develop into normal ones.
