Effect Of Action Selection Demands On The Execution Of Goal-Directed Reaches, James Garrison Riedy
Effect Of Action Selection Demands On The Execution Of Goal-Directed Reaches, James Garrison Riedy
Theses and Dissertations
A well-studied model of cognitive motor function is the process of action selection. It is unclear how the planning demands of a reaching movement interact with the added complexity of s election. Therefore, this thesis investigated the effect of adding selection demands to the performance of skilled reaches in a virtual environment. Thirty young, healthy participants reached ipsilaterally or contralaterally with either their dominant (right hand) or non-dominant (left hand) under two conditions: execute only (EO) and action selection (AS). Selection accuracy was higher for the EO condition than the AS condition for both arms and both directions (left arm: …
Customer Discovery And Applied Research And Development For An Environmental Nanotechnology, Paul Michael Vecchiarelli
Customer Discovery And Applied Research And Development For An Environmental Nanotechnology, Paul Michael Vecchiarelli
Theses and Dissertations
Technology transfer is a process by which an innovative technology, typically produced in a non-commercial setting such as academia, is developed into a potential market opportunity. The first phase of technology transfer, once a technology has been developed, is to identify a customer segment and determine a value proposition that describes what need the technology will fulfill for them. This phase has been systematized into a framework known as customer discovery. Success in customer discovery will indicate technological gaps, such as scale-up, prototyping, and realistic testing, that are needed to deliver the value proposition to the initial customer. Both phases …
Jewish Genetic Diseases: Knowledge Of Reproductive Risk And Cancer Predisposition Among Young Adults Of Ashkenazi Descent, Hayley Kathleen Granger
Jewish Genetic Diseases: Knowledge Of Reproductive Risk And Cancer Predisposition Among Young Adults Of Ashkenazi Descent, Hayley Kathleen Granger
Theses and Dissertations
Founder mutations within the Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) population are associated with significantly higher carrier rates for certain severe, life-limiting conditions collectively called Jewish Genetic Diseases (JGDs), and for pathogenic variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA1/2) cancer susceptibility genes. Efforts to educate AJ individuals about the implications of these founder mutations and available testing have increased the past forty years; however, studies suggest AJ individuals are not well educated on the topic (Hardy et al., 2022; Kaback, 2001; Warsch et al., 2014). Studies evaluating the reason for this gap in knowledge of young AJ adults are lacking. This study aimed …
Assessing The Gaps And Potential Solutions To Improve Access To Genetic Testing For Autistic Individuals, Nisha Dhiren Pandya
Assessing The Gaps And Potential Solutions To Improve Access To Genetic Testing For Autistic Individuals, Nisha Dhiren Pandya
Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) continues to increase. Numerous genetic syndromes increase the risk of ASD. Professional organizations have published guidelines on the genetic testing recommended for Autistic individuals. However, healthcare providers do not unanimously offer genetic testing or refer for a genetics evaluation. Notably, parents of Autistic individuals express interest in learning about genetic testing as an option for their children.
This study aimed to identify gaps to improve access to genetic evaluations for Autistic individuals and their families. A survey was sent to healthcare providers across the United States that currently see Autistic individuals. We expected …

Face Validation Of A Spanish Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening Knowledge Scale, Kenya Michelle De Leon
Theses and Dissertations
Non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS) provides risk assessment for chromosome aneuploidy in pregnancy. Previous studies in the United Kingdom and United States have attempted to measure patient knowledge, decisional conflict, and informed choice in cohorts of English-speaking pregnant patients who elected NIPS (Griffin et al., 2023; Lewis et al., 2016). However, knowledge scales utilized in these studies have not been validated. The current study was conducted in order to assess face validity of a Spanish NIPS knowledge scale that was originally written in English. This scale was developed as part of a larger project to ultimately provide more validated research measures …
Genetic Testing For Autism: The Autistic Adult Perspective, Thomas Scott Dent
Genetic Testing For Autism: The Autistic Adult Perspective, Thomas Scott Dent
Theses and Dissertations
Many professional medical organizations recommend some level of genetic testing as standard of care for those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. However, genetic testing related to the diagnosis of autism is seen as controversial by many in the autistic community. While opinions about genetic testing have been well-documented from the perspective of the parents of autistic children, our understanding of the autistic adult perspective remains limited. We implemented a descriptive, web-based survey of autistic adults to assess their awareness of, attitudes towards, and interests in genetic testing for autism (n = 145). Our data demonstrated that half of our participants …
Evaluating Health Awareness In Cancer Genetics Amongst The Black And African American Community In South Carolina, Annika Jaliya Gadson
Evaluating Health Awareness In Cancer Genetics Amongst The Black And African American Community In South Carolina, Annika Jaliya Gadson
Theses and Dissertations
Historically minoritized individuals are underrepresented in genomic research which limits the ability to fully understand genetic variation within the population (Sirugo et al., 2019). This creates bias that questions the effectiveness of guidelines for genetic testing, predictive risk values, and medical management. Disparities in cancer genetics may be attributed to historical events that have cultivated mistrust in research and medicine, institutional bias, provider skepticism in patient reporting of medical symptoms, and limited access to genetic testing (Saulsberry et al., 2013). More exploration is needed to better understand how to increase access and awareness of cancer genetic services to Black and …

Genomic Analysis Of Exophiala Sp. Etnp2018, A Marine Fungal Strain Isolated From An Oxygen Minimum Zone, Margaret Kelly Bernish
Theses and Dissertations
Microbial metabolic activity is central to biogeochemical cycling in virtually all ecosystems. Fungi are important parts of microbial communities, serving as decomposers, parasites, and symbionts. Most of our understanding of fungal ecology is derived from the study of isolated, cultured terrestrial fungi. However, the marine environment includes thousands of divergent, uncultured fungi. A number of these species, which include saprobes, parasites, and endophytes, can survive and sporulate in a wide range of salinities. Other such species face the additional challenge of limited nutrient accessibility. The genus Exophiala includes agents of mycoses in both humans and in marine animals. This research …

Genetic Mechanisms Underlying Maladaptation In Specialized Species Interactions, Nitin Ravikanthachari
Genetic Mechanisms Underlying Maladaptation In Specialized Species Interactions, Nitin Ravikanthachari
Theses and Dissertations
Adaptation has been used as the framework to understand the power of natural selection in structuring biodiversity and driving biological interactions. However, recent examples have indicated that many organisms are maladapted to their local conditions. Maladaptation can result from various causes including rapid environmental change, novel environments, interplay of evolutionary forces (viz: gene flow-selection balance) and anthropogenic disturbance.
To dissect the genetic mechanisms underlying maladaptation, I used the interaction between Pieris macdunnoughii (Remington) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) which lays eggs on an invasive mustard Thlaspi arvense (L.) (Brassicaceae), which is lethal to the larvae.
First, local adaptation to avoid laying eggs on …

An Examination Of Inter-Limb Functional Asymmetry After A Fatiguing Bout Of Exercise In High Level Soccer Players, Nestor Urrea
Theses and Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: Inter-limb functional asymmetries greater than 15% have been linked to a greater incidence of injury. Moreover, asymmetries greater than 10% have shown greater risk of injury and worsened sport performance, especially for strength and power capabilities, in athletes of multiple sports. Fatigue and sex are factors that seem to influence injury rates as well as greater asymmetries between limbs. This research project aims to investigate the effects of a fatiguing bout of exercise in strength and power inter-limb functional asymmetries in male and female soccer players. It was hypothesized that strength and power asymmetries are negatively affected after a …

Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen
Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
The chicken is a classic model organism that has provided key insights into embryonic development. Chicken embryos can be directly manipulated and observed during development while retaining the potential to reach adulthood. Despite this benefit, the utility of the chicken in studying development has been limited by the difficulty of introducing genetic changes to the genome. The recent development of cell culture conditions for chicken primordial germ cells (cPGC) has made it feasible to produce transgenic chickens, but there is still a lack of tools for introducing genetic modifications into cPGCs. Recombinase Mediated Cassette Exchange (RMCE) is a technique that …

Molecular Diagnosis Of Non X-Linked Ectodermal Dysplasias Using Next Generation Sequencing, Eman Abdelalim Rabie
Theses and Dissertations
Ectodermal Dysplasias (EDs) are rare heterogenous monogenic developmental disorders sharing the impairment of at least two surface ectoderm-derived organs. Symptoms characteristically manifest developmental abnormalities of the teeth, and three skin derivatives: hair follicles, nails, and sweat glands. The disease-causing gene was identified for only fewer than half of 160 characterized ED phenotypes. Expectedly, ED-causing genes regulate or function in ectodermal-developmental processes. The most common phenotype is hypohidrotic ED featuring teeth agenesis, and diminished or complete absence of hair and sweat production. Disease-causing variants of EDA, EDAR, EDARADD and WNT10A genes were identified in 60-90% of ED patients in …

Genetically Encoded Iron Sensor Cell Line: A Model For Studying Ferroptosis And Cellular Iron Metabolism, Daoud F. Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Cell death is a biological process that is essential in proper cellular homeostasis, development, and function. Malfunction of this system can lead to different diseases and cancers. Ferroptosis is a form of cell death that occurs as a result of the accumulation of lipid peroxides, that are dependent on intracellular levels of iron. Iron is essential to multiple metabolic processes in the cell, including the catalyzation of lipid peroxides. Thus, intracellular iron levels must be tightly regulated. Our goal is to create a cellular model to study and detect changes in intracellular iron levels. Through the use of a genetically …
