Excerpt: Berlese or Tullgren funnel methods of extraction of forest litter fauna often produce minute arthropods called pseudoscorpions. These are relatively common but have received little attention. Because of the author's involvement with the Michigan State University soil zoology research project the potential significance of these animals has become a matter of interest. While examining a collection of Collembola from Illinois, I came across a small specimen which looked like an immature Katiannina (Maynard and Downs, 1951). Using Salmon's key (1964), I traced the species to the tribe Katiannini, of which Katiannina is not a member. The species dealt with in this paper belongs to the genus Polykatianna Salmon (1946).

An expanded program of research on the cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus (L.), in various north-central states has made it necessary to develop methods of rearing all stages of the beetle for laboratory use. Because the insect survives diapause in the adult state (Castro, 1964 and Connin, et al., 1968) it must presently be stored 10-12 weeks at 38" F before consistent oviposition is obtained. Hoopingarner, et al. '(1965) indicated that, while males are sexually mature in the prediapause condition, the female was unwilling to mate until after diapause and was not mature sexually until after mating.

Excerpt: Interest in soil biology has been prompted by recent investigations into the action of insecticides on plants and animals. Observations in the field must be supplemented by laboratory investigations conducted under controlled conditions. Consequently, it becomes necessary to rear and handle soil animals under artificial situations for bio-assay and life cycle studies. When large numbers of individuals are required, special problems in maintenance and manipulation arise. Relatively inexpensive and simple methods for such projects are essential and this paper describes some of those techniques which we have found expedient.

Excerpt: The genus Peridea Stephens, according to Forbes (1948), is composed of two subgenera: Lophodonta Packard and Peridea. To the former belong the two species, angulosa (J.E. Smith, 1797) and ferruginea Packard, 1864; to the latter only one species, basitriens (Walker, 1855). The foodplant of angulosa is given by Forbes (1948) as "oak," that of ferruginea as "birch." The larva of basitriens has never been described, while the larvae of the other two species have been described and figured in color by Packard (1895).

Excerpt: Very little is known of the biology of bee-flies in the genus Geron; the few available records show that the larvae are parasitic on Lepidoptera larvae. Mik (1896) noted that Geron gibbosus Meigen had been reared from larvae of the pyralid Nephopteryx sublineatella Strg. and the psychid Fumaria crassiorella (Bruand) in Europe, while Maxwell-Lefroy and Howlett (1909) recorded the tortricid Laspeyresia jaculutrix Meyrick as a host of Geron argentifrons Bru. in India. The present paper appears to be the first report on the biology of any North American Geron.

Excerpt: In my study of Speyeria distribution (Moeck, 1957; Grey & Moeck, 1962; Grey, Moeck & Evans, 1963) it was found desirable to determine the degree of mobility of the individuals in a population of Speyeria atlantis (Edwards). For this study I selected an isolated population of atlantis along a tributary of Horse Creek on the eastern slope of the South Laramie Range, some 17 or 18 miles northwest of Laramie. The specimens along this tributary were dark and well silvered, closely approaching the typical "appalachian" form in the Black Hills. This colony, furthermore, was the only population of atlantis …

While a good deal of work has been reported on the natural history and ecology of the opiliones in Europe and England (Bristowe, 1949; Sankey, 1949; Todd, 1949; Phillipson, 1959; Savory, 1964; Juberthie, 1965), this important group has received little attention in North America. Bishop (1949) published a concise synopsis of reactions and general habits of the opiliones of New York and, in a Ph. D. dissertation, Edgar (1960) described the biology of the order in Michigan.

The Synonmy Of Diargia And Hyponeura With The Genus Argia (Odonata: Coenargrionidae: Argiinae), Leonora K. Gloyd

The generic distinctness of Diargia and Hyponeura has long been questioned but, because venational characters have largely formed the basis of classification of the higher taxa in the Odonata, authors have been reluctant to admit exceptions and to act contrariwise. The evidence given below leaves little or no doubt that venational differences are not adequate to separate the species of these genera from those of Argia. Diargia is represented by the dwarf bicellulata Calvert, and Hyponeura by two species, the giant type species funckii Selys and the slightly smaller lugens (Hagen).

Excerpt: During late June and early July, 1965, it was apparent that plantations of Scotch and Austrian pines in various Michigan counties were being damaged by lepidopterous larvae mining in the pith of newly developed lateral and terminal branches. Infested samples were examined by Dr. William Wallner, Department of Entomology, Michigan State University, and an attempt was made to rear the extracted larvae. Although as many as two larvae were present in some of the shoots, none survived and no adult moths were secured. A series of larvae was preserved for future study.

Generally, wood-lice are confined to habitats where the saturation deficit is low and damp surfaces are available. Cylisticus convexus (De Geer) is one of many species that are found in a relatively wet habitat (Edney, 1954). Allee (1926) was the first to report on some moisture reactions of C. convexus. When he supplied them with dry filter paper, they aggregated strongly to reduce water loss. When he supplied them with very dry paper in a dry atmosphere, the isopods all moved about frantically until they died. Excerpt: Several specimens of Scaphytopius magdalensis (Provancher) were collected by Burger (1966), and brought to the attention of the senior author for verification. This leafhopper, a vector of Blueberry Stunt, is widely distributed in the eastern United States, and southern Ontario and Quebec. This, the first record of a leafhopper virus vector for blueberries in Michigan, increases the list of leafhopper vectors of plant diseases in the state , given in Taboada and Hoffman (1965). to 14.

Very few North American grasshoppers are true feeders on conifers. The several species of the punctulatus species-group of the genus Melanoplus, as summarized and revised by Rehn (1946), have been reported as occurring on pine, juniper, and cedar, but few reports of actual feeding on conifers have appeared in the literature. Because of this paucity of information regarding the use of conifers as food for grasshoppers, we summarize here observations of several kinds of grasshoppers feeding on red pine (Pinus resinosa Aiton) in 1966 in Michigan.

Excerpt: Many lepidopterists agree that if mechanically disturbed, butterflies may be attracted to fluorescent light. Yet the entire problem of the attraction of day-flying Lepidoptera to light i s still in the data-collecting stage, and records indicate that mechanical disturbance may not always be a determining factor. Numerous papers on the problem have appeared in recent years, especially in the J.Lepid. Soc., which may be consulted for bibliographical details not attempted in this collection note.

In August 1965, numerous burrows of tiger beetle larvae were found on a short expanse of beach along the shore of Lake Michigan in Emmet Co., Mich. Several adults associated with the larvae were captured and identified as Cicindela hirticollis Say. Blanchard (1921) collected C. hirticollis a few miles south of this area in 1917, and reported he had not found it in the interior of either Emmet or Cheboygan counties. In an extensive survey of Michigan Cicindelidae, Graves (1963) found C. hirticollis to be restricted to the sandy shores of three of the Great Lakes. Apparently this insect is …

Excerpt: When work began on the Michigan Collembolain 1959, the Entomology Museum at Michigan State University included only one specimen of the order in its catalog of insects. The University of Michigan had a few vials of specimens determined by Harlow B. Mills, and a modest number was in the Robert R. Dreisbach collection at Midland, Michigan.
