The research program, "The Functional Ecology of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in the Lower Chesapeake Bay" (EPA/CBP Grant No. R805974), is an integrative effort composed of seven principal investigators. The research team has worked since July 1978 at one study site, the Vaucluse Shores area, to develop and institute a coherent research program on SAV ecological relationships.

The principal studies have focused on plant productivity, metabolism and nutrient cycling, the role of resident consumers in SAV community dynamics, the role of migratory species and efforts to develop a realistic, ecosystem simulation model of SAV communities.

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1979 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through·early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

Eggs and larvae of decapod crustaceans and embryos of Mulinia laterulis were exposed to chlorinated seawater for varying periods in continuous flow systems. Mortality, developmental rate, and general behavior were recorded.

Otter trawl cruises were conducted off the middle Atlantic coast of the U. S. from 1971 to 1975. More than 50,000 specimens of demersal fishes were captured during this program at depths of 75 m to 3000 m. Species assemblages were distributed along a coenocline with bathymetric areas of rapid faunal change (anantoclines) and of more gradual faunal change (aganoclines). Between 75 and 3000 m anantoclines were found at 150 to 200 m, 400 to 600 m, 900 to 1000 m, 1350 to 1500 m, and 1900 to 2100 m. The zooplankton of Chesapeake Bay occurs as two definable, seasonal populations: a summer-fall community, peaking in August, and a winter-spring assemblage, peaking in February or March (Grant 1977; Jacobs 1978). A minimum of two surveys per year are therefore required for long-term assessment of these communities: March and August have been selected as sampling months. Adequate assessment of meroplankton, particularly fish eggs and larvae and the larvae of decapod crustaceans, requires sampling over the principal reproductive period of June through August (Goy 1976; Olney 1978). Nansemond River, Study Of Leased Oyster Grounds In The Vicinity Of The Us 17 Bridge (Before Construction), Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Leased oyster ground in the vicinity of the US 17 Bridge across the Nansemond River was sampled in September, October and November of 1978 and January of 1979 by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. ·The purposes were: 1) to determine the extent of the shellfish resources on the leased areas; and 2) to estimate the value of those resoμrces occurring within the proposed right-of-way. Other than one small, isolated lump, the only place oysters were found within the area studied was on three adjacent leases of Henry Parker.

This work is a result of our efforts to compile the literature related to the results of nutrient enrichment of estuaries. It consists of two related publications, a bibliography and an annotated bibliography; both works are accompanied by an index which applies to either bibliography. Filter-feeding marine animals such as molluscs, tunicates and barnacles filter particles as small as 1 micron from suspension during their feeding process and void them as fecal pellets. These settle at much faster rates than their component particles. Feces or pseudofeces which settle are termed biodeposits. Eighty-two to 93 percent by volume of the particles in the biodeposits of several species of molluscs are smaller than 4 microns; the range in size of those particles is about 1 to 10 microns (Haven and Morales-Alamo, 1973). The Old Plantation Trough site biological community was surveyed August 29-30, 1978. Bottom profiles were completed September 9, 1978. An Interim Report containing the procedures, list of stations, hydrographic data, bottom profiles, and species list was prepared and filed October 3, 1978.

This report contains tables of numbers and weights of fish and invertebrates collected during the August 1978 survey and thus concludes the report on the Summer Survey.

A preliminary survey of summer plankton in ·waters surrounding the C. P. Crane generating station in Bengies, Maryland, revealed several possible effects of plant operation. These perturbations were separated into apparent small-scale and large-scale effects:

Small-scale effects were limited to the immediate discharge region of Saltpeter Creek and included (1) occasional elevation of temperatures at the surface (in August) to above the lethal limit for most zooplankton and sufficiently high to inhibit photosynthesis, (2) a decrease in chlorophyll-a, seen in July and August, (3) a sharp decrease in productivity, also in July and August, and (4) absence of a common …

Sampling of spring 1979 plankton populations at the C.P. Crane site was conducted at 15 stations during six sampling periods for phytoplankton, at 5 stations monthly from March to June for microzooplankton and monthly at 14 stations for mesozooplankton. Ancillary physical data were collected at all the above stations, while nutrients were measured twice in April.

Sampling of the shellfish resource in the lower part of Brick Kiln (or Wythe) Creek was conducted by personnel of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science during August, October and November of 1978. Live oysters.were found in several places from the bridge downstream t9 the mouth. Observations indicate that the oyster beds here have average growth and normal rates of survival; recruitment is occurring. No other species of commercially valuable shellfish was found.
