Frass Production In Oak Forests In Southern Michigan, James L. Faulkner
Masters Theses
Production of frass (insect fecal material) was determined for five slightly different oak forest habitats in Allegan State Game Area, Allegan County, Michigan, for the 1968 growing season. Frass samples were collected on 30 or more 9X9 inch collecting surfaces in each of the study areas. It was found that 1.66 grams or 87.36 square inches of white oak leaf consumed was the equivalent of one gram of frass produced. This was determined from five muslin bags enclosing white oak branches and containing fifteen assorted insect larvae from four species believed to be responsible for most of the frass production …

Mechanism Of Organic Translocation In Straight-Neck Squash, James F. Nicholson
Mechanism Of Organic Translocation In Straight-Neck Squash, James F. Nicholson
Masters Theses
The mechanism of organic translocation in Cucurbita pepo L. variety melopepo torticollis was investigated. Two-centimeter petiole sections from nodes 2 and 3 of 22-day squash were analyzed colormetrically for the concentration of stachyose and sucrose. Stachyose is an important transport molecule and, in contrast to sucrose, may be localized in the phloem. This investigation attempted to determine the possibility of stachyose being further localized in a particulate cell fraction.
The volume of the phloem was determined to be 20 mm3 per petiole. The concentration of stachyose per petiole, assuming that all of the stachyose was in the phloem and …

Kinetic Studies Of The Cell Elongation Phenomenon In Etiolated Pisum Stem Segments, Grant M. Barkley
Masters Theses
The short-term growth response of etiolated pea stem segments (Pisum sativum L., var. Alaska) was investigated using a high-resolution growth recording device. The immediate effect of treatment with indoleacetic acid (IAA) is an inhibition of growth. This inhibition lasts about 10 minutes and then the rate of elongation rises abruptly to a new steady rate about 4 times the rate of elongation before auxin treatment. This rapid steady rate of elongation, however, continues for only about 22 minutes before declining suddenly to a lower steady rate of growth about 2 times the rate of elongation before the addition of auxin. …
