The Presence Of Tetracycline-Resistant Bacteria In A Kean University Campus Soil Sample, Esther Blankson, Jessica Kobilas, Gianna Medeiros

Kean Quest

The spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment is a worldwide problem that threatens human health. Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics as the consumption of antibiotics grows. In particular, soil can be contaminated with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. As of today, there is no surveillance system that tracks the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, however, Tufts University aims to change this by implementing the Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment (PARE) project. The course-based PARE project consists of research students sampling soil in diverse locations and reporting the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The purpose of …

The Role Of Community In Immunity Against Sars-Cov-2, Jessica Kobilas Apr 2023

The Role Of Community In Immunity Against Sars-Cov-2, Jessica Kobilas

Kean Quest

This literature review investigated the roles genes activated by social interactions had in helping to build immunity against COVID-19. Past studies have shown that individuals who are more socially connected are less likely to become ill due to social interactions strengthening the immune system through optimal exposure to bacteria and viruses in the environment. The IL-6 and TLR4 genes that are activated through social interactions and associated with cytokines have been analyzed in cases of various viral infections. Cytokines play a role in inflammation and have both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses to infections and viruses. The results suggest that the …

The Impact Of Exercise On The Mental Health Of College Students In The United States, Maryam Eltomy May 2022

The Impact Of Exercise On The Mental Health Of College Students In The United States, Maryam Eltomy

Kean Quest

Student mental health and well-being are a significant and growing concern on college campuses across the United States. As a result, to better meet students' mental health demands and decrease strain on existing services, the current quantitative research focused on exploring the impact of exercise on a college student’s mental health. An online survey involving Kean University students was conducted and information was primarily gathered through an online questionnaire. Approximately, 40 students were randomly selected to participate in this research study. The results of the study revealed that participants felt that consistent exercise was beneficial in helping reduce their mental …

Copycat Mass Killings: How Personality Might Moderate Identification With Antisocial Characters, Emily R. Mazzurco Nov 2021

Copycat Mass Killings: How Personality Might Moderate Identification With Antisocial Characters, Emily R. Mazzurco

Kean Quest

Research indicates that certain personality traits are prevalent within mass killers. Aggression, social rejection, narcissism, fame-seeking, low self-esteem, and depression are commonalities with mass killers, specifically mass shooters. Identification or idolizing antisocial fictional characters is also a common behavior within these types of offenders. These types of killers often draw inspiration for their own crimes from past criminals or from film and TV, thus committing what is known as a copycat crime. The purpose of the current study will be to examine the effects of social rejection and instigation on the likelihood of identifying with an antisocial character in young …

Transmission Of Escherichia Coli Through Toilet Seats, Kenna Atienza, Diana Ludizaca, Carisa Davis May 2021

Transmission Of Escherichia Coli Through Toilet Seats, Kenna Atienza, Diana Ludizaca, Carisa Davis

Kean Quest

Microbes are found on all kinds of surfaces, but not all are pathogenic. Bathrooms are perceived by the public as an important area in the transmission of pathogenic microbes, and the purpose of this project was to investigate the transmission of bacteria from toilet seats to skin. Escherichia coli strain K-12 was applied to the toilet seat and different methods were used to see which was the best way to prevent the transmission of bacteria to the skin. E. coli strain K-12 was identified in samples using the differential media, Eosin Methylene Blue agar. The experiment found that cleaning the …

Ebola Virus Disease: The Biology, Pathology, Treatments, And Advancements, Dhruvi Patel, Eric Delgado, Peter Nasr Oct 2020

Ebola Virus Disease: The Biology, Pathology, Treatments, And Advancements, Dhruvi Patel, Eric Delgado, Peter Nasr

Kean Quest

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is caused by a virulent pathogen, which is a member of the viral family Filoviridae. It is a filamentous viral particle containing a single stranded, negative RNA. It causes extreme fatal hemorrhagic fever in both humans and non-humans. It is mainly found in Africa. Transmission of EVD occurs primarily through contact with infected body fluids. It causes immune suppression that eventually leads to multiple organ failure due to the proliferation. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the 2013-2016 outbreak and after the current Ebola outbreak on August 1, 2018 in Dominican Republic of Congo (DRC), the …

Analyzing Flavonoids In Chocolate-Based Beverages, Ernest Afoakwah Oct 2020

Analyzing Flavonoids In Chocolate-Based Beverages, Ernest Afoakwah

Kean Quest

Some amount of previous research has suggested that chocolate-based drinks are very effective post-exercise recovery beverages. The fluid, electrolyte, protein and carbohydrate content of chocolate milk has been credited with possibly providing this benefit. Antioxidants perhaps contribute to post exercise recovery. Flavonoids, also naturally occurring phytochemicals in cocoa, the chief ingredient in chocolate, may be capable of providing antioxidant benefits. Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and colorimetry, the present research involved examining the presence of flavonoids (particularly catechin) in seven chocolate-based milk drinks, as they may serve some importance regarding post-exercise recovery. A similar protocol (which basically involved defatting samples, …

Developing A Web-Based Learning Experience For Nutrition Among Future Health And Sports Science Professionals, Melissa K. Casimir, Sandra Sertile, Emily Breen Apr 2020

Developing A Web-Based Learning Experience For Nutrition Among Future Health And Sports Science Professionals, Melissa K. Casimir, Sandra Sertile, Emily Breen

Kean Quest

Nutrition education theories support the use of videos to help individuals take steps towards changing their behavior. The purpose of NOURISH (Nutrition Outreach to Undergrads in Sports Science and Health Professions) is to develop a multimedia, theory-based nutrition website for students preparing for careers in medicine and sports science. Research has shown that nutrition knowledge and resources are often limited for students pursuing careers in sports medicine or medicine. NOURISH was a collaboration with Kean University’s graphic design team to develop interactive review questions and a brief video to help students learn about pre-exercise hydration guidelines using the multimedia learning …

Monthly Water And Soil Analysis On Trotter’S Creek In Elizabeth, New Jersey And Kean University In The Spring 2019 Semester, Maurizia De Palma Oct 2019

Monthly Water And Soil Analysis On Trotter’S Creek In Elizabeth, New Jersey And Kean University In The Spring 2019 Semester, Maurizia De Palma

Kean Quest

Urban waterways can easily be affected by pollution, runoff, and leaching, which can have biological, chemical, and economic impacts. Trotter’s Creek, which begins at the Peerless Beverage Company in Union, New Jersey and ends at the Phil Rizzuto Park in Elizabeth, New Jersey, is a local example of an urban waterway currently being impacted by such factors. To assess the overall health of Trotter’s Creek, a qualitative assessment was conducted on soil and water samples that were taken once a month from February to April. The samples were taken upstream at the Peerless Beverage Company, midstream at Kean University, and …
