Two field trials were conducted to evaluate limited-creep feeding of spring- born calves using pelleted creep rations with either 0.5, 5, or 10% salt. Average daily gain was increased (P<.05) over controls in trial 2 and when both trials were combined. However, intakes were higher than desired and feed conversion much poorer than expected.

Intake of dormant, bluestem-range forage was increased by feeding steers supplements based on wheat middlings or soybean meal + sorghum grain, although the degree of influence on forage intake depended on type and level of supplementation. All supplements increased (P<.10) total diet digestibility. However, fiber digestibility tended to be slightly lower for steers receiving the high level of wheat middlings and the soybean meal + sorghum grain supplement.

Whole-plant corn silages were treated with Ecosyl® or Foraform® in one trial and Biomate® or Biomate + Cold-flo® in the second trial. In both trials, the silages were well preserved, but all were highly unstable in air during the first 3 to 4 weeks of the feed-out period. Foraform-treated silage was 2 to 6 degrees F cooler than its control, but Cold-flo-treated silage was 2 to 8 degrees F warmer during the first 10 days post-filling. Laboratory silo results showed that both control silages fermented extremely fast; however, inoculated silages had slightly lower pH and higher lactic acid values through …

Foraform® was evaluated in four trials using alfalfa, corn, and two forage sorghums harvested in 1987 and ensiled in PVC laboratory silos. There was a dramatic crop by Foraform interaction, with Foraform delaying and restricting the fermentations, as expected, in alfalfa and corn. In both forage sorghum hybrids, although the ensiling process was delayed about 24 hours by the Foraform treatment, end-product silages had lower pH values and equal or higher lactic acid levels than untreated silages. Feeding fat increased feed intake and average daily gain, but feed efficiency was not affected. Feeding high levels of calcium (.9%) had no overall effect, but may tend to increase intake when fed with diets that contain primarily vegetable fat or highly unsaturated fat products.

Pancreatic α-amylase activity was 54% higher in cattle fed at twice maintenance energy than in cattle fed at maintenance and was 52% greater in hay-fed than grain-fed cattle. Increased pancreatic α-amylase activity probably represents increased secretion as well. α-amylase activity in small intestinal digesta was greater with increased energy intake and with hay feeding. Small intestine mucosal disaccharidase activities in cattle were unaffected by diet. Lactase activity was highest in the proximal segment of the small intestine and low in both mid and distal segments. Eighty-seven 3/8 Simmental x 5/8 Hereford heifers calved at 2 years of age and were designated as Single-Calf-Heifers (SCH). Twenty-six heifer mates that did not calve were designated as 2-year-old open heifers (2-OH), and 22, 1 year-old open heifers (1-OH) from the same source served as controls. All heifer groups were fed a high-grain diet for 112 to 137 days before slaughter. The SCH were started on feed about 1 month after calving, and their calves were weaned early about 5 weeks prior to slaughter. Thirty-three of the SCH were implanted with Synovex-H® after calving. Five field trials were conducted with 762 steers and heifers to evaluate Finaplix® in combination with Ralgro® or Synovex® for growing and finishing programs. Effects on cattle performance and carcass characteristics were inconsistent across trials. However, in general, implanting cattle with Finaplix and either Ralgro or Synovex tended to result in increased gain, final weight, and carcass weight, with little effect on backfat, loin eye area or kidney, heart, and pelvic fat. Marbling score and the percentage of cattle grading choice tended to be reduced slightly, although this was not usually significant.

A computer program was developed for analyzing DHI records to evaluate potential losses from 1) reproduction, 2) nutrition, 3) milk quality, and 4) genetics. Production-tested Kansas Holstein herds were grouped according to Rolling Herd Average (RHA), with the groups averaging 13,587, 15,988, 17,938 and 20,227 lb milk/cow/yr. Losses were directly related to RHA, amounting to $573, $426, $300, and $160/cow/yr, respectively. The Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) program provides valuable information to dairy farmers for making feeding, breeding, and management decisions. Yet, the only economic information provided by the program is feed cost/cwt milk produced and income over feed cost. Hence, …

There has been no appreciable change in the reproduction status of Kansas dairy herds over the last 25 yr. For example, the average calving interval was 398 days in 1965 and 405 days in 1988. Analysis of other measures show similar results. Although the long-stated management goal for a dairy herd has been a calf-a-year or 365-day calving interval, few herds realize this efficiency. On the positive side, the stability of reproductive performance is noteworthy, since genetic antagonism exists between production and reproduction. One hundred and one Holstein heifers from the KSU Dairy Unit were used in this experiment. They were assigned to two treatments in which they were fed either 100% or 115% of the 1988 NRC requirements of energy, protein, major minerals, and major vitamins. Body measurements (height, length, heart girth, weight, body condition scores, and backfat thickness) were recorded. Rations for each group were formulated using the average wt of the heifers. Results suggest that feeding 115% of NRC requirements produces larger frame heifers (without excess body condition), with potential for earlier calving, compared to feeding 100% of NRC requirements.; …

Whole-plant grain sorghum silage and Silo-Best-Soluble inoculated and uninoculated control corn silages were compared in complete-mixed diets for mid-lactation dairy cows. Cows fed the inoculated corn silage yielded .6 lb and those fed the grain sorghum silage yielded 1.7 lb more fat-corrected milk than those fed the control corn silage. Fat percentage for the cows fed the grain sorghum silage was .2 units greater than for those fed the control and the inoculated corn silages. Forty Holstein cows in mid-lactation were utilized to evaluate the effects of water oxygenation on milk production, milk composition, and somatic cell count. Cows were fed a total mixed ration consisting of 25% alfalfa, 25% corn silage, and 50% corn-soy concentrate on a dry matter basis. Treatments included a 7-day preliminary period followed by two 28-day periods in which the treatments were reversed. Water consumption, milk production, milk composition, and somatic cell count were not different between treatments. Two hundred fifty-five pigs, weaned at 4 wk of age, were used in an experiment to compare the efficacy of Bacillus subtilis and antibiotics as growth promoters for swine from nursery to finishing. Treatments were a nonmedicated control; B. subtilis added at 5 x 105, 1 X 106, or 5 x 106 CFU/g feed; or antibiotics (50 g/ton carbadox during the nursery phase and 100 g/ton chlortetracycline in the growing and finishing phases). We examined the effects of flushing (3.4 lb additional ground milo for approximately 2 wk before insemination) and pubertal status (inseminated at puberty or postpuberty) on ovulation rate and litter traits in gilts. Hushing resulted in 1.1 more eggs released at ovulation and 1.3 more pigs/litter. The response in litter size occurred primarily among gilts inseminated at their pubertal estrus. Neither flushing nor pubertal status affected prenatal survival. Data for 58 gilts were used to evaluate the relationship between ovulation rate and litter size. As consumer resistance to fatter meats has increased, the industry has had two options, 1) argue against popular opinion that fat consumption posed a health risk or 2) strive to reduce the fatness of their products. Since the first option is highly unlikely, the NPPC and commodity leaders have moved rapidly, decisively, and aggressively to promote and reposition pork as a vital, healthful part of the U.S. diet. The types and diameters of muscle fibers from 30 barrows that had received daily injections of porcine somatotropin (pST) or a placebo and were fed dietary lysine at .6, .8, 1.0 or 1.2% were determined. Fiber data indicated that pST slightly increases the anaerobic metabolic potential of longissimus muscle. The higher levels of lysine caused enlargement of muscle cells. Earlier research has shown that this type of muscle biochemistry contributes to development of PSE muscle. Two trials were conducted to determine the suitability of soybean products for baby pigs. For trial 1, 40 weanling pigs were orally infused with .01 lb/pig/d of either dried skim milk (control), soybean meal (48% CP), soy protein concentrate, extruded soy protein concentrate, or soy protein isolate from d 7 to 12 of age, weaned at 21 d of age, and fed a diet containing the corresponding protein source until d 7 postweaning. Seventy-five barrows (initial wt 136 lb) were utilized to evaluate the effects of dietary lysine levels ranging from .6 to 1.4% on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Pigs were fed a pelleted corn-sesame meal diet containing .6% lysine (17.7% crude protein) or diets containing .8, 1.0, 1.2, or 1.4% lysine provided by L-Iysine HCl. All other amino acids, vitamins, and minerals were calculated to be at least double the pig's requirement (NRC, 1988), to ensure that no nutrient other than lysine would limit performance. Two hundred forty nursery pigs (12.8 lb initial wt) were used in a 28-d growth assay to determine the nutritional value of Williams 82 soybeans with (+K) and without (-K) gene expression for the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor. Treatments were soybean type (+K and -K) and heat treatment (none, half-roasting, and full-roasting time), in a factorial arrangement. The soybeans were heated in a Roast-a-Tron roaster, ground, and added to corn-dried whey diets formulated to be limiting in lysine (.88%). Pigs fed diets with -K soybeans gained 21% faster and were 13% more efficient than pigs fed diets with + K soybeans. …

A total of 158 gilts were fed ad libitum one of the following four diets during lactation: .65% lysine, .75% lysine, .65% lysine + 3% soybean oil, and .75% lysine + 3% soybean oil. These same sows were carried through a second parity on the same lactation diet treatments. In parity 1, lysine level had no effect on feed intake or interval from weaning to estrus. Addition of 3% soybean oil increased the weaning to estrus interval and decreased feed intake, although caloric intake was not different. Odd-numbered pigs in new-born litters were vaccinated on d 1 with an oral Escherichia coli bacterin and their performance after weaning was compared with that of nonvaccinated littermates (even numbered pigs). In addition, each group of pigs was allotted to four water medication treatments that were administered from d 2 to d 6 after weaning. No significant interaction between vaccine and water treatment was observed. Vaccinated and non-vaccinated pigs performed similarly throughout the trial for the traits of ADG, ADFI, and F/G, indicating no beneficial effect from vaccination. A finishing study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a commercially available flavoring agent on finishing pig performance. One hundred ninety-two finishing pigs were used in the study. Half the pigs received the finishing diet with added flavor, whereas the other half received the same diet without flavor. There were no differences in average daily gain (ADG) between pigs fed either the flavored or non-flavored feed. However, the pigs receiving flavored feed had significantly higher average daily feed intake for the entire trial. Two hundred seventy pigs (21 d of age and 12.8 lb initial wt) were used to determine if adding emulsifiers (lecithin and lysolecithin) to starter pig diets affects growth performance and digestibility of nutrients. Treatments were: 1) corn-soy control; 2) diet 1 with soybean oil; 3) diet 1 with tallow; 4, 5, and 6) diet 3 with lecithin replacing 5%, 10%, and 30% of the tallow; 7, 8, and 9) diet 3 with lysolecithin replacing 5%, 10%, and 30% of the tallow. The endometrium (lining of the uterus) functions to support and nurture developing embryos. However, 20 to 30% of pig embryos are lost in early pregnancy. Therefore, we developed methods to study the endometrium. Our initial work addresses the production of prostaglandins by the endometrium. Prostaglandins are known to play important roles in the establishment of pregnancy. In the pig, this process occurs near the end of the second week of pregnancy. Therefore, we determined the prostaglandin production by glandular and stromal cells of pig endometrium collected on d 13 of pregnancy. One digestion trial utilizing 24 weanling pigs was conducted to compare the effect of various fat sources on gut morphology and ileal nutrient digestibility. Diets had either no added oil (control) or were supplemented with 10% either soybean oil, coconut oil or a combination of soybean oil and coconut oil (1:1 ratio). Pigs were sacrificed on 29 d of age, and ileal digesta were collected. Villus height and crypt depth were measured at the midpoint of the small intestine.
