Beach Zone Fish Community Structure In The James River, Virglnia, Douglas W. Lipton, Jack G. Travelstead Jan 1978

Beach Zone Fish Community Structure In The James River, Virglnia, Douglas W. Lipton, Jack G. Travelstead

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

A seining survey of the fish fauna of the beach zone in the James River, Virginia, was conducted from July to December 1977. Weekly collections were made at 4 stations resulting in the capture of 17,602 individuals representing 36 species. Abundance and diversity were influenced by large catches of schooling and migratory species utilizing nearshore areas as a nursery ground. Freshwater species diversity peaked in August and September, while mesohaline species diversity peaked in July, September, and November. Cluster analysis was used to define 3 freshwater station groups representing warm, moderate, and cool water temperatures, but was not helpful in …

Deterioration Of Floy Fd-67 Internal Anchor Tags, M. Y. Hedgepeth, W. H. Kriete Jr., J. V. Merriner

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Yellow Floy FD-67 internal anchor tags were utilized in an experimental and field study of tag discoloration, tag legibility and fouling organisms. Most tags exhibited some degree of discoloration over time. The rate and extent of discoloration varied between two batches of tags purchased in different years. The legibility of a tag was not affected to a great extent by the degree of discoloration. Legends of some completely discolored tags were still readable. Fouling organisms eroded the vinylite covering and deteriorated the legends of some tags. Bryozoans, barnacles and tunicates were the most commonly encountered fouling organisms. Barnacles were the …

The Men All Singing : The Story Of Menhaden Fishing, John Frye

Books

The Men All Singing is a folk history as well as economic. It reaches back almost four centuries to tell of a little-known fishery that shares with cod the vista of our coastal life. Now the last decades of the twentieth century see great changes in all fisheries and our treatment of the waters that give so much of our food.

Factors Associated With Accuracy In Sampling Fish Eggs And Larvae, R. R. Bowles, J. V. Merriner, G. C. Grant

Reports

Ichthyoplankton sampling gear is reviewed and evaluated with emphasis on power plant impact assessment. Effects of biotic and abiotic factors on gear accuracy are discussed. Difficulties associated with obtaining representative samples from patchy population distributions are acknowledged. A listing of commonly used sampling gear has been compiled and indexed by ecosystem. Meter nets and variations of meter nets are the most widely used gear for sampling fish eggs and larvae. Comparative gear evaluation has been performed based on information compiled in the report. Although the diversity of habitats and the great number of relatively important species makes summarization difficult, the …

Effects Of Cornstarch And Dextrose On Oysters, Kenneth W. Turgeon, Dexter S. Haven Jan 1978

Effects Of Cornstarch And Dextrose On Oysters, Kenneth W. Turgeon, Dexter S. Haven

VIMS Articles

The growth and fattening of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), has long been of interest to oyster biologists since the market value of oysters is directly related to the quantity and quality of "meat" obtained per bushel ( = 35.2 L) of harvested oysters. Much of the early work done on the growth and fattening of oysters attempted to demonstrate the superior nutritional value of specific planktonic organisms and detritus (MOORE & POPE, 1910; MARTIN, 1923, 1927a, 1927b, 1928; GAVARD, 1927; NELSON, 1947). MITCHELL ( I917) was the first to study the effects of carbohydrates of known composition …

Biological Description Of Old Plantation Flats Deep Trough, A Proposed Dredged Material Disposal Site: Interim Report, W. A. Van Engle, J. V. Merriner, F. J. Wojcik Jan 1978

Biological Description Of Old Plantation Flats Deep Trough, A Proposed Dredged Material Disposal Site: Interim Report, W. A. Van Engle, J. V. Merriner, F. J. Wojcik

Reports

The Old Plantation Deep Trough sampling area in the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay began at the latitudes of the southwestern end of the Cherrystone Inlet channel near Old Plantation Flats (approximately 37°13.S'N) and extended north to the latitude of Church Neck at Hungars Creek (approximately 37°25.S'N) (see attached Figure 1: Disposal Area 2 and area to the north). Twenty-one stations, one-quarter mile square grid, were occupied on August 29 and 30, 1978 (Table 1 and accompanying Charts). Seven stations were sampled with a lined, 30-foot semiballoon otter trawl, seven sampled with a 48-inch wide crab dredge, and seven …

Uptake Of Kepone By Oysters Exposed To Contaminated Sediments Mixed With Lignite, Dexter S. Haven, Reinaldo Morales-Alamo Jan 1978

Uptake Of Kepone By Oysters Exposed To Contaminated Sediments Mixed With Lignite, Dexter S. Haven, Reinaldo Morales-Alamo

Reports

Preliminary studies conducted by personnel of the Allied Chemical Corporation at Morristown, N. J. suggested that coa] would be used to adsorb Kepone from an aquatic substrate. .The possibility of using coal to bind Kepone contaminating the natural environment indicated further preliminary exploration of the matter.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science undertook a laboratory study with oysters under contract with the Allied Chemical Corp. to explore that possibility. Lignite was mixd on a 1:10 dry-weight ratio with sediments contaminated with Kepone.

Harmonic Analysis And Tidal Prediction By The Method Of Least Squares: A User's Manual, John D. Boon, Kevin P. Kiley Jan 1978

Harmonic Analysis And Tidal Prediction By The Method Of Least Squares: A User's Manual, John D. Boon, Kevin P. Kiley

Reports

A common objective in the treatment of measured tides is the mathematical separation by harmonic analysis of certain periodic components which can be used to simulate the astronomical tide. Traditionally, astronomical or predicted tides have been represented by the sum of several such components, each one due to a particular aspect of the tide-producing forces. Once determined, the same set of parameters governing each periodic component may be used to predict the tide during any desired time period at a given location. These parameters are known as the tidal constants for that location. Although a number of different methods have …

A Survey Of The Shellfish Resources Adjacent To Croaker Landing In The York River, Virginia, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

From 7 March 1978 through 14 March 1978, an area of the bottom in the York River around Croaker Landing was studied to define the existing shellfish resource. The study was conducted at the request of the Division of Parks of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Economic Development in conjunction with the construction of the York River State Park. Comparison of this study with a post-dredging assessment will provide a measure of the possible impact of dredging activities on the surrounding bottom.

Final Technical Report For Nsf Grant #Oce 75-20241, Entitled Identification And Role Of The Ultraplankton Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay Region, Frank O. Perkins, Kenneth L. Webb

Reports

Numbers and species identities of the most dominant small (<15μm) photosynthetic Plankton were determined from samples of lower Chesapeake Bay water. The data is being compared to physical and chemical measurements of the Bay waters in an effort to determine conditions which encourage or inhibit growth of the organisms. Pure cultures of some of the more common species have been established and are being used to evaluate the roles of the organisms in terms of photosynthetic rates and utilization and excretion of nitrogen compounds.
