Tryptophan Catabolism By Lactobacillus Casei Andlactobacillus Helveticus Cheese Flavor Adjuncts, S. Gummalla, Jeff Broadbent
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
Microbial degradation of Trp is thought to promote the formation of aromatic compounds that impart putrid, fecal, or unclean flavors in cheese, but pathways for their production have not been established. This study investigated Trp catabolism by Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus helveticus cheese flavor adjuncts under carbohydrate starvation (pH 6.5, 30 or 37°C, no sugar) and near cheese-ripening (pH 5.2, 4% NaCl, 15°C, no sugar) conditions. Enzyme assays of cell-free extracts indicated that both species of Lactobacillus catabolized Trp to indole-3-lactic acid, and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography of culture supernatants showed this reaction occurred via successive transamination and dehydrogenation reactions. …

Tall larkspurs kill more cattle on mountain rangelands than any other plant or disease. Tall larkspurs are principal components of tall forb communities and occur in patches associated with snow drifts in mountain big sagebrush, aspen and subalpine plant communities. Controlling larkspur patches can substantially reduce cattle deaths (3). Larkspur will never be eradicated, but if its density could be reduced to where a cow could not eat enough larkspur, fast enough, death losses can be reduced.

Yield Comparisons And Unique Characteristics Of The Dwarf Wheat Cultivar 'Usu-Apogee', Bruce Bugbee, G. Koerner
Yield Comparisons And Unique Characteristics Of The Dwarf Wheat Cultivar 'Usu-Apogee', Bruce Bugbee, G. Koerner
Dwarf Crops
Extremely short, yet high yielding cultivars of all crop plants are needed to optimize the food production of bioregenerative life support systems in space. In the early 1980's, we examined over a thousand wheat genotypes from the world germplasm collection in search of genotypes with appropriate characteristics for food production in space. Here we report the results of 12 years of hybridization and selection for the perfect wheat cultivar. 'USU-Apogee' is a full-dwarf hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar developed for high yields in controlled environments. USU-Apogee was developed by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station in cooperation with …

The Long-Term Effects Of High Nh4 +/No3 - Ratios On Wheat Growth And Nitrification In Hydroponic Culture, D. J. Muhlestein, T. Hooten, J. M. Norton, Bruce Bugbee
Hydroponics/Soilless Media
Wheat can be grown in high NH4+ with little effect on growth and yield
Counter ion had no effect on Ca2+ uptake in these studies.
Inoculation with nitrifying microorganisms may help alleviate high NH4+ problems

Methods In Historical Ecology: A Case Study Of Tintic Valley, Utah, Jeffrey A. Creque, Neil E. West, James P. Dobrowolski

Through use of repeat photography, archival research, and field observation to reconstruct landscape vegetation patterns and changes across a 120 year period in the upper Tintic Valley of central Utah, researchers found significant changes in landscape vegetation pattern over time, including change in pinyon-juniper woodland area. Previously reported massive woodland harvest associated with early mining, domestic and agricultural activities elsewhere in the Intermountain West also took place in Utah. The impact on woodland area of the agricultural "bull" fence alone was significant. More recent study area woodland expansion also occurred. Because intensive industrial activity associated with development of the Tintic …

Leymus flavescens (Scribner&Smith) Pilger, yellow wild rye, is a long-lived, strongly rhizomatous, tetraploid (2n54x528) perennial grass of the tribe Triticeae distributed throughout centralWashington, eastern Oregon, and the Snake River plains of Idaho. Our objectives were (1) to describe chromosome pairing and fertility in F1 hybrids between L. flavescens and North American tetraploids (2n54x528) L. triticoides and L. cinereus and Eurasian tetraploids L. secalinus, L. racemosus, and L. alaicus subsp. karataviensis and (2) to utilize genome-specific random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers to verify the genomic composition of L. flavescens. The hybrids L. flavescens # L. triticoides (NsNsXmXm), L. flavescens # …
