Management For Deer, John D. Byelich, Jack L. Cook, Ralph I. Blouch
Aspen Bibliography
Deer in the Lake States are declining. Early stages of second growth forest following the logging era favored deer. Aging and successional changes toward more tolerant types are causing range deterioration. Aspen is the major deer-producing forest type. Commercial harvest of aspen improved deer range, but not enough is taking place to reverse the downward trend of deer or to save the type from conversion. Additional efforts to cut of otherwise treat aspen stands specifically for deer have been of token size. Michigan has earmarked a deer license increase for range improvement and is now embarked on a large scale …

Stemflow In A Multi-Storied Aspen Community, J.R. Clements
Aspen Bibliography
This report presents results of a stemflow study in a 5-year-old, dense, sucker stand of largetooth aspen [Populus grandidentata Michx.]. The purposes of this study were to determine the relation of stemflow volume per tree to gross rain per storm, to determine the proportion of gross rain reaching the ground as stemflow, and to derive an equation to predict rain equivalent of stemflow from gross rain for use in other studies of water relations of this sucker stand.

Simulation Of The Daily Growth Of An Aspen Population From The Measured Co2-Exchange Rates Of The Components, G.C. Bate, D.T. Canvin
Aspen Bibliography
The daily total CO2-exchange of an aspen population (32 trees) was measured using a growth chamber gas analysis system which had been shown to measure accurately the actual carbon gain of the population. The CO2-exchange rates of the components (e.g. roots, stems, leaves) were measured in the light and dark and these rates were used to calculate the total CO2-exchange of the population using a computer model. The carbon gain during the photoperiod was underestimated by 25% in the simulation while the carbon loss during the nyctoperiod was overestimated 100% by the simulation.

Guide To The Identification Of Poplar Cultivars On The Prairies, K. J. Roller, D. H. Thibault, V. Hildahl
Aspen Bibliography
This paper provides those who work with poplars in the prairies region of Canada with an easy-to-use leaf and twig key and detailed morphological descriptions of the more commonly planted cultivars. Recommendations for their use, notes on growth, natural pruning, susceptibility to insects and diseases, and tolerance to climatic extremes are also provided.

For thousands of years after the last glaciers disappeared from northern Minnesota, the forces of nature worked to develop a magnificent forest of predominantly white and red pine. Stands of big pines covered more than 5 million acres.

Aspen Bibliography
Hypoxylon canker, caused by Hypoxylon mammatum (Wahl.) Mill. (sy., H. pruinatum (Slot.) Cke.) is one of the more serious diseases of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) but is rare on bigtooth aspen (P. grandidentata Michx.) (Graham et al., 1963).
