Early Events Of Lethal Action By Tobramycin In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Jane Elizabeth Raulston Dec 1988

Early Events Of Lethal Action By Tobramycin In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Jane Elizabeth Raulston

Doctoral Dissertations

The immediate activities of the aminoglycoside antibiotic, tobramycin, were investigated in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. The influence of carbon growth substrate and the antibiotic exposure environment in the magnitude of activity were examined. Lethality by 8 ug/ml tobramycin occurred rapidly (1 to 3 minutes). The release of specific cellular component into the supernatant was associated with lethality. This material was initially detected as an increase in UV-absorbance. Magnesium in the reaction mixture provided protection against lethality and leakage, but did not reverse lethal damage after a 3 minute tobramycin treatment. Also, uptake of 3H-tobramycin was reduced in the presence of …

An Analysis Of Topographic Effects On Landsat Thematic Mapper Image Using Digital Terain Data, Xiaomin Liu Dec 1988

An Analysis Of Topographic Effects On Landsat Thematic Mapper Image Using Digital Terain Data, Xiaomin Liu

Masters Theses

A comprehensive literature review on the simulation and corrections of topographic variations in remote sensing data was presented. The effects of topography on the scene radiance of LANDSAT thematic mapper (TM) image were examined in the context of the remote sensing of vegetation m Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP).

To simulate the image intensity component due to varying orientation of surface elements, two reflectance models were adopted to generate the synthetic images from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Visual and analytical procedures were developed to register the TM image to the DEM data.

The dark tones of scene radiance …

Changing Adolescents' Food-Related Behavior Via Nutrition Education, Adrienne Adams White Aug 1988

Changing Adolescents' Food-Related Behavior Via Nutrition Education, Adrienne Adams White

Doctoral Dissertations

A nutrition education behavior change strategy for secondary health classes was developed, implemented, and evaluated with 159 adolescents in 6 schools. The experimental design was pretest/posttest, treatment/control group with two treatment groups--one receiving only the behavior change strategy (BC) and one receiving the strategy plus a traditional knowledge-oriented component (BC+). Fundamental concepts of the behavior change strategy included personalization, goal setting, self-management, self-implementation, structured feedback, and structured self-evaluation. Based on a personal nutrient analysis, each adolescent in a treatment group selected improvement of one nutrient as a goal. Effectiveness of the strategy was tested by changes made in nutrient intake …

Prediction Of Forest Type And Productivity Index On Disturbed Sites In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Charlotte Pyle Aug 1988

Prediction Of Forest Type And Productivity Index On Disturbed Sites In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Charlotte Pyle

Masters Theses

A study was conducted in a portion of the permanent vegetation plots established by Uplands Field Research Laboratory in Great Smoky Mountains. The plots were located in the northwestern portion of the park in the vicinity of Cades Cove and Tremont on sites previously disturbed by chestnut blight, logging, fire, farming activities, and livestock grazing. Estimated plot productivity, and data on vegetation, soils, and topographic parameters were available from previous study of these plots. The purpose of the present study was to develop methods to predict forest cover type and plot productivity index score using site and disturbance history-related factors. …

A Survey And Distributional Analysis Of The Park Coccoid Fauna Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park And Evirons, John Keith Watson Aug 1988

A Survey And Distributional Analysis Of The Park Coccoid Fauna Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park And Evirons, John Keith Watson

Masters Theses

This comprehensive study on the coccoids (Homoptera: Coccoidea) of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) resulted in the collection of fifty-three species representing six families from which seven new collection records for Tennessee were obtained. Six species were discovered that possibly represent new species. Analysis of distribution and host relationships are provided. Keys to the families, genera, and species are provided as well as descriptions of scale covers or tests and distinguishing morphological characters of the adult females.

A higher number of species were collected at lower elevational vegetative types and decreased inversely with elevation (y = 17.104 - …

The Importance Of Competition For Food Resources In The Interaction Between Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) And Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri), William E. Ensign Aug 1988

The Importance Of Competition For Food Resources In The Interaction Between Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) And Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri), William E. Ensign

Masters Theses

The last 80 years have seen a drastic reduction in the range of the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) the only salmonid native to the Southern Appalachians. Much of this range reduction is directly correlated with increases in the range of the introduced rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). The purpose of this study was to determine if competition for food resources plays a significant role in this interaction.

Stomach contents were obtained from sympatric and allopatric populations of brook and rainbow trout during June, July, August and September of 1987. Terrestrials comprised the majority of food items in …

The Influence Of Job Characteristics On Organizational Commitment To Job Satisfaction Of Foodservice Employees, Carole M. Herman Jun 1988

The Influence Of Job Characteristics On Organizational Commitment To Job Satisfaction Of Foodservice Employees, Carole M. Herman

Masters Theses

The purpose in this study was to determine the relationship among job characteristics, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction of hospital foodservice employees. A 4-part questionnaire was developed including the 30-item Job Characteristics Inventory, 15-item Organizational Commitment Questionnaire, 6 items related to job satisfaction, and 7 demographic items. Separate written questionnaires were administered to 45 supervisors and 172 employees in dietary departments in 11 East Tennessee hospitals. Data from school and university setting was collected from previous studies.

The reliability for the instruments (Cronbach's alpha) was .89 for employees and .87 for supervisors. Multiple regression analyses were used to test research …

Growth Patterns Of Red Spruce Populations In Two Spruce-Fir Forest Stands In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Xinyuan Wu Mar 1988

Growth Patterns Of Red Spruce Populations In Two Spruce-Fir Forest Stands In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Xinyuan Wu

Masters Theses

Objectives: The objectives of this study are:

To determine the growth pattern of red spruce populations by analyzing the tree ring series of canopy populations

To compare the growth patterns of red spruce populations on south and north facing slopes.

To compare the growth patterns of the noncanopy populations and canopy populations.
