I. Gunter and Christmas (1973) described the events leading to the stranding of a baleen whale on Ship Island, Mississippi, in 1968, giving the species as Balaenopteru physalus, the Rorqual. Unfortunately the identification was in error, but fortunately good photographs were shown. The underside of the tail was a splotched white, but there was no black margin. The specimen also had fewer throat and belly grooves than the Rorqual, as a comparison with True’s (1904) photograph shows. In January 1973, large numbers of Mugil cephalus (striped mullet), weighing approximately 250 gm each, died in two freshwater localities in tidewater bayous of Jackson County, Mississippi. Fish identified as Mugil curema, M. cephalus, Megalops atlantica, Dormitator maculatus, and Fundulus grandis were found dead in other low saline estuarine areas. Fish-kills during cold periods are less commonly encountered in Mississippi than in Texas or Florida. This particular incident is attributed to conditions of stress for fishes incompletely acclimated to the encountered low temperatures. Helminths Of Three Species Of Goby (Pisces: Gobiidae) From Mission Bay, San Diego, Daniel R. Brooks, Edward B. Brothers

From August 1971 to June 1973, 351 gobies representing three species, Ilypnus gilberti (Eigenmann and Eigenmann), Clevelandia ios (Jordan and Gilbert), and Quietula y-cauda (Jenkins and Evermann), were collected by Brooks from Mission Bay, San Diego, California, and examined for helminths. The worms were removed from the organs to saline solution, fixed in 40% isopropyl alcohol or warm AFA, and stored in 70% ethanol. All platyhelminths were stained in Mayer's hematoxylin and mounted in Canada balsam. Nematodes were cleared in glycerine and mounted in glycerine gel. Representative mounts are on deposit with the H. Population Suppression Of Western Corn Rootworm By Adult Control With Ulv Malathion, K. P. Pruess, John F. Witkowski, Earle S. Raun

ULV malathion (9.7 oz AI/acre) was applied by air to a 16 square-mile area during August of 1968, 1969, and 1970. Adult Diabrotica virgifera LeConte populations were reduced the following season by 39, 54, and 72%. No economic infestations occurred in the treated area the year following any application. Postspray migration of beetles was very limited, but adult migration during the peak emergence period the following season contributed to repopulation of the treated area. Migration and fecundity appear to be density-dependent factors which favor increases under low populations. Area suppression does not appear economically feasible, but adult control in individual …

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The Fourth International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery was grown in 1972 at 44 sites in 27 countries. Data were reported from 40 sites. The 30 cultivars grown in the nursery included 15 new entries. Twenty-nine cultivars were winter wheats; one was a spring wheat. Data are reported on grain yield, test weight, plant maturity, plant height, lodging, shattering, winter survival, 1000 kernel weight, frost damage, plant diseases, grain protein and lysine content. Two-year mean data summaries also are reported. Supplemental nursery management information is reported for each nursery site.

Differentiation Of Microsporidian Spore-Tails In Inodosporus Spraguei Gen. Et Sp. N., Robin M. Overstreet, Earl Weidner

The new genus Inodosporus was erected to accept I. spraguei, a new species having eight sporoblasts per pansporoblast with each subsequent spore possessing three or four basal spore-tails and one branched apical one. It is primarily by the apical tail that the species is separated from the only other recognized species, I. octospora (Henneguy, 1892) comb. n., formerly Thelohania octospora.

Spore-tails of I. spraguei are membranous channels which originate within differentiating pansporoblasts during genesis of sporonts into sporoblasts. Tarnished And Alfalfa Plant Bugs In Alfalfa: Population Suppression With Ulv Malathion, K. P. Pruess

ULV malathion (9.7 oz AI/acre) was applied to a 16 mi² area in August 1968, 1969, and 1970 for western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera LeConte, adult control. Nontarget insects in alfalfa, also treated, were monitored. Tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), was reduced 89–98%. Survival of eggs and adult migration resulted in rapid reinfestation of the treated area in 1969 and 1970; adult migration alone was important in 1968. Alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze), was reduced 96–98%. Repopulation following the 1969 and 1970 treatments was by development from eggs surviving the treatment. The beef cattle industry is experiencing a significant increase in demand for feeder cattle. Current difficulties in obtaining sufficient numbers of feeder cattle on a continuing basis have put pressures on the feeder cattle marketing system that did not exist in the past. Feedlot operators, growers (backgrounders), and cow-herd operators are looking for ways and means of improving the system. Innovations are being tested. Those circumstances prompted personnel of the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Kansas and Nebraska to undertake a joint study of cattle marketing under a Regional Research Project.

On Some Anoplocephaline Cestodes From Pikas, Ochotona Spp. (Lagomorpha), In Nepal, With The Description Of Ectopocephalium Abei Gen. Et Sp. N., Robert L. Rausch, Masashi Ohbayashi

Three species of anoplocephaline cestodes, Anoplocephalinae gen. et sp. indet., Schizorchis cf. altaica Gvozdev, 1951, and Ectopocephalium abei gen. et sp. n., are reported from pikas, Ochotona roylei (Ogilby) and O. macrotis (Giinther), from central Nepal. The taxonomic status of Schizorchis esarsi Lovekar et al., 1972, and of Schizorchodes dipodomi Bienek and Grundmann, 1972, is discussed, with the conclusion that both species belong in the subfamily Linstowiinae, near the genus Atriotaenia Sandground, 1926. Ectopocephalium gen. n. is distinguished from other genera in the subfamily Anoplocephalinae by the modified anterior portion of the strobila, which is embedded in the tissue of …

Two species of hypopial nyrnphs of mites of the family Glycyphagidae were recovered from Heteromys gaumeri from Yucatan, Mexico. Numerous specimens of a hypopus identified as Dermacarus ornatus. Fain were recovered from the hair and skin. A single specimen of an endoparasitic hypopus identified as a new genus and species, Neolabidophorus yucatanensis, was recovered from the hair follicles. The new genus differs from similar forms of the subfamily Metalabidophorinae in having a rudimentary clasper organ represented by a median sclerite behind legs IV without external serrated claspers, structure and slightly dorsal position of the tarsal solenidia on legs …

Bats Of Margarita Island, Venezuela, With Zoogeographic Comments, James Dale Smith, Hugh H. Genoways

Sixteen species of bats are reported from Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta, Venezuela. These include two species of emballonurids, one noctilionid, two mormoopids, nine phyllostomatids, one vespertilionid, and one molossid. Accounts including natural history and taxonomic comments are given for each species. The chiropteran fauna of Margarita Island is compared with the bat faunas of the adjacent Venezuelan mainland and islands off the northern coast of South America, including Trinidad and other Antillean islands. It is concluded that the chiropteran fauna of Margarita Island represents an attenuated mainland fauna.

The ultrastructure of Herpetomonas megaseliae Daggett, Dollahon, and Janovy, 1972, culture forms has been described in detail by Janovy et aI. (1974, J. Prot. 21: 53-59). Pellicular microtubules were described in pro- and opisthomastigotes as parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body and to the axis of the flagellar pocket. Microtubules lay in an electron translucent zone directly beneath the limiting membrane, and the flagellar pocket opened at the anterior end.

Purification And Characterization Of Syringacin 4-A, A Bacteriocin From Pseudomonas Syringae 4-A, William L. Haag, Anne K. Vidaver

Syringacin 4-A, a bacteriocin produced by Pseudomonas syrinagae 4-A, was obtained by induction with ultraviolet irradiation or mitomycin C. Approximately 1,000-fold purification of the bacteriocin was achieved by manganous chloride precipitation, differential centrifugation, and chromatography on hydroxyapatite columns. The purified syngacin was homogeneous on hydroxyapatite columns and sucrose density gradients; it also sedimented as a single entity in the analytical ultracentrifuge. The buoyant density of purified syringacin in cesium chloride was 1.294 g/ml. The sedimentation coefficient was calculated as 120S, and the diffusion coefficient was 6.49 x 10^-8 cm²/s. Physiology Of Sporeforming Bacteria Associated With Insects: Radiorespirometric Survey Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The 12 Serotypes Of Bacillus Thuringiensis, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Grant St. Julian, Lee A. Bulla Jr.

Radiorespirometry was used to compare the primary pathways of glucose catabolism in 18 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis representing the 12 established serotypes. Every strain utilizes the Embden-Meyerhof-Pamas pathway almost exclusively; pentose-phosphate pathway participation is minor. The Embden- Meyerhof-Parnas pathway predominates regardless of whether the cells were grown in a minimal medium or one containing yeast extract. The results indicate that the absolute requirement for citrate and related compounds is not a result of defective citrate or glucose transport and metabolism.

A defined medium is described in which 18 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis representing the 12 established serotypes grow, sporulate, and produce a parasporal crystal. This minimal medium contains glucose and salts supplemented with either aspartate, glutamate, or citrate. These organic acids are required and cannot be replaced by vitamin mixtures or succinate even though succinate is taken up at a rate similar to that of aspartate, glutamate, and citrate.

This bulletin describes nutrient and energy composition of beef cattle waste fractions as a function of the ration roughage level and type of feedlot. Results can be used to plan engineering system approaches and research to develop handling and processing equipment necessary for recovery of the most valuable portion of waste.

Carbohydrate And Organic Nitrogen Concentrations Within Range Grass Parts At Maturity, L. J. Perry Jr., Lowell E. Moser

Total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) levels were significantly different among eight range grasses at maturity. Roots, rhizomes, and stem bases (storage organs), differed significantly in percentage TNC within rhizomatous and bunch-type (non-rhizomatous) grasses. Percent organic nitrogen differed significantly among grasses and storage organs but not to the same extent as with TNC. We of nonstructural polysaccharide accumulated (Smith, 1968; suggest that TNC concentrations of storage organs must be determined for each grass before sampling for TNC levels, in Grasses of subtropical order to locate storage organs with greatest TNC concentration.

In the course of an investigation of the nature of the heart and kidney of D. pilsbryi, the present author discovered an unexpected configuration of the anatomy of the digestive system (Bazata, 1971). The present report represents an extension of this preliminary study and is the first detailed account of the digestive system in D. pilsbryi and D. texasianum. Comparative descriptions of the siphonal complex, the foot, and the histology of the anterior mantle also are given.
