Seed Rain–Successional Feedbacks In Wet Tropical Forests, Nohemi Huanca Nuñez, Robin L. Chazdon, Sabrina E. Russo
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Abstract
Tropical forest regeneration after abandonment of former agricultural land depends critically on the input of tree seeds, yet seed dispersal is increasingly disrupted in contemporary human-modified landscapes. Here, we introduce the concept of seed rain–successional feedbacks as a deterministic process in which seed rain is shaped by successional dynamics internal to a forest site and that acts to reinforce priority effects. We used a combination of time series and chronosequence approaches to investigate how the quantity and taxonomic and functional composition of seed rain change during succession and to evaluate the strength of seed rain–successional feedbacks, relative to other …
Replacing Herbicides With Groundcovers To Enhance Vineyard Sustainability, Benjamin A. Loseke
Replacing Herbicides With Groundcovers To Enhance Vineyard Sustainability, Benjamin A. Loseke
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In many Midwestern vineyards a three to four-foot weed-free strip is maintained directly beneath the vines to reduce vine-weed competition. Conventionally, this strip has been conserved with repeated applications of herbicide, mainly glyphosate. The necessity for this weed-free strip to reduce vine-weed competition has been well documented in more arid climates. However, in areas with higher soil fertility and adequate rainfall, this strip may be unnecessary. Moreover, stand establishment and early vine growth have not been well documented when planting groundcovers (GC) immediately following the vine planting. The main objective of this project is to assess the severity of competition …
Breeding For Resistance In California Strawberry To Verticillium Dahliae, Zachary Christman
Breeding For Resistance In California Strawberry To Verticillium Dahliae, Zachary Christman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since 1930 the University of California, Davis, has been developing strawberry cultivars that are adapted to the agricultural industry and regional farms. Developing cultivars that require fewer inputs are of significant economic importance in agronomy. Developing a crop resistant to a disease is beneficial for horticulturists since less labor and chemicals are needed for a high yield.6
In commercial strawberry cultivars, complete resistance to V. dahlia is extremely rare. The majority of Californian strawberry cultivars are highly susceptible to it.2 Over the last 18 years of plant breeding for strawberry cultivars with a high degree of resistance and …
Historical Common Names Of Great Plains Plants, With Scientific Names Index. Volume Ii: Scientific Names Index, Elaine Nowick
Historical Common Names Of Great Plains Plants, With Scientific Names Index. Volume Ii: Scientific Names Index, Elaine Nowick
Zea E-Books Collection
Containing thousands of entries of both vernacular and scientific names of Great Plains plants, the literature that informs this exhaustive listing spans nearly 300 years. Author Elaine Nowick has drawn from sources as diverse as Linnaeus, Lewis and Clark, and local university extension publications to compile the gamut of practical, and often fanciful, common plant names used over the years. Each common name is accompanied by a definitive scientific name with references and authority information. Interspersed with scientifically-correct botanical line drawings, the entries are written in standard ICBN format, making this a useful volume for scholars as well as lay …

Review Of A Garden Of Marvels: How We Discovered That Flowers Have Sex, Leaves Eat Air, And Other Secrets Of Plants, By Ruth Kassinger, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Review Of A Garden Of Marvels: How We Discovered That Flowers Have Sex, Leaves Eat Air, And Other Secrets Of Plants, By Ruth Kassinger, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications
Until I read Kassinger’s book I clearly did not have the historical perspective necessary to appreciate the incredible lives of plants and how botanists have come to their present understandings of same. Kassinger, a gardener by avocation, cut out most of the jargon, defined terms that she does use, and wrote simple and compelling tales of the histories of discoveries about the various parts of plants and how those parts work together for the benefit of the plant and, ultimately, for our benefit.
[This] is a book that any gardener or other interested person with a modest background in plant …
An Investigation Of Reflective Mulches For Use Over Capillary Mat Systems For Winter-Time Greenhouse Strawberry Production, George E. Meyer, Ellen T. Paparozzi, Elizabeth Walter-Shea, Erin E. Blankenship, Stacy A. Adams
Adams
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Photosynthethically active radiation (PAR) is a principle environmental variable used by horticultural specialists, agronomists and ecosystem modelers to characterize the quantity and quality of light conducive to plant growth and development. Spatial distribution of PAR in a greenhouse can be quite variable and diffuse throughout the day time photoperiod, especially at low sun angles in northern regions of the United States. Four colors of reflective plastic mulches (white, red, olive, and black) were evaluated for winter-time strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) production based on their reflectance and transmittance properties in a double-polyethylene, plastic-glazed Quonset greenhouse inNebraska. The spectral properties …

Micropropagation And Acclimatization Of 'Norton' Grapevine (Vitis Aestivalis), Brant B. Bigger
Micropropagation And Acclimatization Of 'Norton' Grapevine (Vitis Aestivalis), Brant B. Bigger
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Propagation of the Vitis aestivalis cultivar 'Norton‘ (syn='Cynthiana‘) through traditional woody cuttings has been difficult. Rooting of woody cuttings has been a major hindrance in propagating this cultivar and providing enough plants to meet grower needs. In vitro propagation offers another method of increasing plant material. Cultures were established and maintained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 4 M 6-benzyladenine (BA) and thiamine at 0.5 mg•L-1 and solidified with Difco-Bacto agar at 7.5 g•L-1. The objectives of this study were to determine optimal methods for in vitro production and ex vitro establishment of 'Norton‘ plantlets. …
