Turkish Journal of Zoology

Free amino acids are found in spermatozoa and seminal plasma. Their qualitative and quantitative presence have been affected by many factors. Under in vitro storage conditions, their effects on spermatozoa in animal species and also human have been concerned over the last decades. In this study, the effects of tryptophan, phenylalanine and cysteine on DNA integrity, lipid peroxidation, viability and motility parameters in spermatozoa of the common carp (Cyprinuscarpio) were assessed during short-term storage. Spermatozoa were incubated at 1, 5, 25, and 50 mM of these amino acids in vitro at 4 °C in a time?dependent manner (6, 24, and …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Obesity is an important public health problem and a risk factor for many chronic diseases, and its prevalence is increasing rapidly. In recent years there has been interest in the impact of nutrients on obesity and this has been addressed as a research topic. Bee bread is a bee product that has recently attracted attention with its macro- and micronutrients and the enzymes and biocomponents it contains. Although there are many studies on the biological properties and effects of bee bread, its effect on obesity with leptin and ghrelin has not been investigated. In this study, 40 Sprague-Dawley adult female …

Dihydroquercetin Increases The Adaptive Potential Of Wild Soybean Against Copper Sulfateand Cadmium Sulfate Toxicity, Darya Konstantinovna Chernyshuk, Lubov Yegorovna Ivachenko, Hülya Doğan, Ghulam Raza, Muhammad Amjad Ali, Kirill Sergeyevich Golokhvast, Muhammad Amjad Nawaz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the mechanism of the biochemical adaptation of wild soybean to the experimentally modeled effects of cadmium sulfate and copper sulfate in approximately double permissible concentration was investigated. The extracted concentrations of cadmium and copper in the experimental soil were determined by inversion voltammetry - 1.46 and 48.25 mg/kg, respectively. Growing soybeans in soil with the addition of copper and cadmium sulfates led to an increase in the concentration of malonic dialdehyde in soybean seeds relative to control by 62% and 38%, respectively, which confirmed the strengthening of oxidative processes. There was also an increase in the specific …

Stress Response Related To Ultrasonographic Examination In Dogs, Cenker Çağri Cingi, Abdurrahman Fati̇h Fi̇dan, Durmuş Fati̇h Başer, Mehmet Uçar, Zülfükar Kadi̇r Saritaş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study investigated whether abdominal ultrasonography, a frequently used examination method in clinics and hospitals, causes stress in dogs. For the study, 10 healthy dogs were used. Following general examination, intravenous catheters were placed in the V. cephalica accecorius of the dogs and blood specimens were collected to obtain serum and plasma samples (minute 0). After a 30- min break, ultrasonography was applied following shaving of the abdominal region. Serum and plasma samples were collected from the intravenous catheters at the 5th, 15th, and 20th minutes of the ultrasonographic examination during which the urinary bladder, left kidney, spleen, stomach, liver, …

The Endogenous L-Cysteine Desulfhydrase And Hydrogen Sulfide Participate In Supplemented Phosphorus-Induced Tolerance To Salinity Stress In Maize (Zea Mays) Plants, Cengi̇z Kaya, Muhammad Ashraf Jan 2020

The Endogenous L-Cysteine Desulfhydrase And Hydrogen Sulfide Participate In Supplemented Phosphorus-Induced Tolerance To Salinity Stress In Maize (Zea Mays) Plants, Cengi̇z Kaya, Muhammad Ashraf

Turkish Journal of Botany

Although phosphorus supplementation (SP) has been shown to improve salinity tolerance in plants, crosstalk between hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or L-cysteine desulfhydrase (LDES) and SP-induced salinity tolerance needs to be elucidated. Thus, prior to initiation of stress treatment, young seedlings were transferred to aqueous solution containing the scavenger of H2S, 0.1 mM hypotaurine (HT), or the inhibitor of LDES, 0.3 mM DL-propargylglycine (PAG), for 12 h. The plants grown under control (no NaCl added) or salinity stress (SS; 100 mM NaCl) were then supplemented with SP (2.0 mM in total) as KH2PO4 for 5 weeks. SS caused a significant decrease in …

Regulation Of Antioxidant Activity In Maize (Zea Mays L.) By Exogenous Application Of Sulfur Under Saline Conditions, Alia Riffat, Muhammad Sajid Aqeel Ahmad Jan 2020

Regulation Of Antioxidant Activity In Maize (Zea Mays L.) By Exogenous Application Of Sulfur Under Saline Conditions, Alia Riffat, Muhammad Sajid Aqeel Ahmad

Turkish Journal of Botany

One of the major effects of salt stress is high production of reactive oxygen species that adversely affect essential cellular metabolic pathways. To limit the elevated production of reactive oxygen species, plants stimulate various types of antioxidants. In this study, sulfur was used to induce tolerance against oxidative stress through modulation of the activities of various antioxidants. Two maize genotypes (Agatti 2003 and Pak Afgoi 2003) were subjected to different salinity (25 and 75 mM) and sulfur (40 and 80 mM) treatments and a control treatment. Various antioxidants and oxidative stress determinants in maize organs (leaf, shoot, and root) were …

Oxidative Stress In Calves With Enzootic Pneumonia, Mustafa Özbek, Cumali̇ Özkan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was performed to evaluate the oxidative stress in calves with enzootic pneumonia. Ninety calves that were 2?6 months old were used in this study. Ten of these calves were healthy and used as the control group, while 80 were diagnosed with enzootic pneumonia according to the clinical examinations. The biochemical results showed that total oxidant status (TOS), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and sialic acid (SA) levels were higher in calves with enzootic pneumonia than in the control group. While there was a statistically significant increase in TOS, MDA, and SA concentrations, there was not any statistically significant …
