Murine hepatitis virus strain (MHV-3) produces a strain-dependent pattern of disease which has been used as a model for fulminant viral hepatitis. This study was undertaken to examine whether there was a correlation between macrophage activation and susceptibility or resistance to MHV-3 infection. Peritoneal macrophages were isolated from resistant A/J and susceptible BALB/cJ mice and, following stimulation with MHV-3 or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), analyzed for transcription of mRNA and production of interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), mouse fibrinogen-like protein (musfiblp), tissue factor (TF), leukotriene B4, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Macrophages from BALB/cJ mice produced …

Demand for household furniture is shaped by a multitude of dynamic forces, from the global economic situation to subtle changes in consumer preferences. Correspondingly, the academic disciplines employed to identify, analyze, and predict these forces range from macroeconomics to psychology, and include demography, sociology, geography, and several applied fields. The demographic characteristics of furniture consumers has been a particularly popular area of research, primarily because of the availability of secondary data from various public · agencies. Some of this research is reviewed in a subsequent section of this report.

Project Report No. 38, Average Observed Fusiform Rust Transition Paths, O. Schabenberger, T. G. Greroire, J. David Lenhart

Informal Project Reports

fusiform rust ( Cronatrium quercuum [Berk. ] Miyabe ex Shirai f . sp . tusiforme L. ) is a devastating disease in loblolly ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash ( Pinus elliottii Englem. ) pine plantations throughout the southern United States . Pine stems infected with fusiform rust are subject to hazards such as wind breakage, and if a pine stem with a gall on it does survive to harvest, utilization of the infected stem piece may be down-graded from possible lumber to probable pulpwood or maybe completely discarded .

Hardwoods In North Mississippi: Resource Information From Two Forest Surveys, Steven H. Bullard, Clay Robertson, Joshua Idassi, Joanne L. Faulkner

Faculty Publications

The USDA Forest Service periodically conducts forest surveys for Mississippi and other states. Survey results for a 26-county area designated as "North Mississippi" were most recently published in late 1993. We compared the hardwood acreages, volume, growth, removals and other values to the survey results published in 1987 for this region, and several significant results are evident:

Root Growth Potential And Field Survival Of Container Loblolly Pine Seedlings Fall Fertilized With Nitrogen, Hans Michael Williams, David B. South Jan 1995

Root Growth Potential And Field Survival Of Container Loblolly Pine Seedlings Fall Fertilized With Nitrogen, Hans Michael Williams, David B. South

Faculty Publications

Two studies investigated the effects of fall nitrogen fertilizer applications on the root growth potential (RGP) and field performance of container loblolly pine seedlings (Pinus taeda L.). The seedlings were sampled at 4 chilling levels ranging from 100 to 550 hours (0 to 8' C). Seedlings propagated for the first study may have had a hidden nutrient deficiency and therefore the fall diammonium phosphate (DAP) application at rates of 202 kg N/ha and 67 kg N/ha increased RGP 43% and 32%, respectively. The growing season mineral fertilizer application rate was increased in the second study which may explain why nitrogen …

Clearcutting And Shearing On A Saline Soil In East Texas: Impacts On Soil Physical Properties, Chang Mingteh, Alexander K. Sayok, Kenneth G. Watterson

Faculty Publications

Soil samples, or in-situ measurements, were collected at seven occasions and at six depths to study the Impact of three forest conditions on soil physical properties of a saline soil in E. Texas. Soil bulk density, CW. of silt plus clay at the surface horizons, soil water content, soil water retention, and depth to groundwater Increased following intensive site preparation. Differences in these properties between the commercial clearcuttlng and undisturbed forest were small. The wet soil conditions created in the Intensive preparation site are not likely to be responsible for the failure of artificial pine regeneration. In areas where site …

Wilderness Planning: A Case Study In Dispute Resolution, Michael Legg, Marlene Rebori Tull Jan 1995

Wilderness Planning: A Case Study In Dispute Resolution, Michael Legg, Marlene Rebori Tull

Faculty Publications

Local landowners and environmental groups have historically disputed with the USDA National Forest Service in Texas over wilderness management issues such as wild and prescribed fire and management of the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonusfrontalis). To help diffuse polarization and open lines of communication between agency personnel and the general public, the theory of transactive planning was applied with the LAC process on two wilderness areas. Data collection consisted of: 1) participant observation; 2) issue-evaluation surveys; 3) process-evaluation surveys; and 4) exit interviews. Results indicate the planning process aids in dispute resolution by reducing antagonistic relationships and fostering public consensus in …

Association Of Mouse Fibrinogen-Like Protein With Murine Hepatitis Virus-Induced Prothrombinase Activity, Rebecca D. Parr, Laisum Fung, Jeffrey Reneker, Nancy Myers-Mason, Julian L. Leibowitz, Gary Levy

Faculty Publications

Previously, we demonstrated induction of a unique macrophage prothrombinase during infection of BALB/cJ mice by mouse hepatitis virus strain 3 (MHV-3). By immunologic screening, a clone representing this prothrombinase was isolated from a cDNA library and sequenced. The sequence identified this clone as representing part of a gene, musfiblp, that encodes a fibrinogen-like protein. Six additional clones were isolated, and one clone, p11-3-1, encompassed the entire coding region of musfiblp. Murine macrophages did not constitutively express musfiblp but, when infected with MHV-3, synthesized musfiblp-specific mRNA. musfiblp mRNA induction was earlier and significantly greater in BALB/cJ than A/J …
