Physiological Effects Of Sustained Swimming On Salinity Acclimation In Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha), Fritzman Geena
Physiological Effects Of Sustained Swimming On Salinity Acclimation In Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha), Fritzman Geena
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) encounter a variety of environmental conditions on their migration from freshwater to the ocean. These migrations are physiologically demanding, requiring salmon to reverse their osmoregulatory strategies to successfully acclimate to changing salinity. This reversal occurs primarily at the gills (main osmoregulatory organ) where respiratory and osmoregulatory functions are occurring simultaneously. When subjected to a physiological stressor, the gills will compromise in design to alleviate the most limited function. This tradeoff is known as the ‘osmorespiratory compromise’. This thesis examined whether an osmorespiratory compromise in chinook salmon induced by sustained exercise (a gas exchange stressor) would …
Alternative Interventions For Children Coping With Chronic Conditions: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Nina M. Pelsi, Kim S. Amer
Alternative Interventions For Children Coping With Chronic Conditions: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Nina M. Pelsi, Kim S. Amer
DePaul Discoveries
Reduction of stressors and anxiety levels in adolescents with chronic illnesses is a critical concept in pediatric health care in America today. The many stressors associated with chronic illness include displaying physical and mental differences, social stigma, financial difficulty, and family stress. These stressors may affect the adolescent’s ability to learn and cope in everyday life. The current research was a critical review of the literature examining studies done with adolescents coping with chronic diseases and illnesses. The aim was to analyze the most efficacious non-pharmacological methods for reducing stressors in adolescents with chronic illness. A critical review of the …
Muscle Na+/K+-Atpase Isoform Regulation In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Following Burst And Sustained Swimming Challenges, Mattina Alonge
Muscle Na+/K+-Atpase Isoform Regulation In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Following Burst And Sustained Swimming Challenges, Mattina Alonge
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, are often recognized for their physiologically demanding migration patterns. Shifts in relative expression of specific Na+/K+-ATPase isoforms have been identified during salinity acclimation and similar changes in expression may also occur in response to other physiological challenges. The Na+/K+- ATPase plays a crucial role in the maintenance of membrane potential and excitability during muscle contraction through prompt restoration of sodium and potassium gradients. Additionally, a tissue-specific isoform (α2) has been identified within skeletal muscle, with localized expression conserved across multiple species but the specific function is unknown. …
