Germination And Host Range Of Branched Broomrape (Orobanche Ramosa) From Texas, Robert D. Coffin
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The effect of temperature on the germination of Orobanche ramosa L., branched broomrape, was investigated by dividing the physiological stages leading to germination into discrete events: pretreatment, a period when the seed becomes receptive to stimulant, and posttreatment, when stimulant application (GR-24) induces germination. Seed was pretreated and posttreated at 16 different temperature combinations. Optimal pretreatment was at 15°C and 18°C, maximum posttreatment at 18°C. Highest germination was obtained by pretreating and posttreating seed at 18°C, lowest at 24°C. The effect of different pretreatment regimes was tested. Seeds were pretreated over moist filter paper and in soil for Oto …

Cereal Crop Tolerance To Herbicides, D Bowran, R Madin, A Lindsay
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
The 1984 experimental programme was a continuation of that started in 1981. The programme was aimed at evaluating the major herbicides in current use for cereals as well as new herbicides against the recommended varieties at three main sites, these being Wongan Hills, Merredin and Mt Barker. In addition Stage 4 breeding lines were evaluated against the same herbicides but only at Wongan Hills. The herbicides used and their rates and time of application are presented in Table 1. Herbicides were applied at both the recommended and twice the recommended rates of application, except in the breeding line trial where …

84M5, 84M6, 84M7. Location: Merredin Research Station Merredin, Western Australia. Three experiments were conducted to measure the productivity and water use of alternative wheatbelt crop species on contrasting soil types in a dry mediterranean environment. Crop species investigated were wheat, barley, cereal rye, narrow leafed lupin and field pea. These were grown on three contrasting soil types, a red-brown earth, a sandy loam over clay and a deep loamy sand; all soils occurring within close proximity to each other. Detailed measurements were made of meteorological conditions, dry matter production, leaf area, root growth, soil water profiles, light interception and plant …

For the first time a laboratory for conducting this type of research has been established in South Perth, and it has been possible to type plants from mature leaf material. This obviates the necessity of waiting for plants to seed to be able to identify them. A total of six new collections were identified as belonging to either the broad-leaf or narrow-leaf forms, the locations for which are given in Table l.l..

Research On Declared Plants And Other Weeds, G. A. Pearce
Research On Declared Plants And Other Weeds, G. A. Pearce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Knowledge about weeds is necessary to assess their significance, devise control measures and to select those which are to be declared for the purposes of the Agricultural and Related Resources Protection Act.
Once a plant has been declared in Western Australia, all landowners must control and prevent its spread to new areas and work towards eradicating known infestations. The Act also declares plants which are prohibited from entering the State.
It is becoming more and more important to provide specific reasons for the declaration of a weed and its placement in a certain category. Such decisions require appropriate action to …

Skeleton Weed : How Serious A Threat In Western Australia?, F D. Panetta, J. Dodd
Skeleton Weed : How Serious A Threat In Western Australia?, F D. Panetta, J. Dodd
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Skeleton weed is probably the most serious weed ever to threaten the Australian wheat industry. It interferes with wheat cropping at two stages: through competition with the growing crop, particularly for nitrogen and water during the crop's development: and later through the production of a tall, wiry flowering stem which tangles in harvesting machinery and can make harvesting difficult, if not impossible.
The weed is a major problem in eastern Australia although a combination of cultural, chemical and biological control programmes is helping to reduce its impact.
In Western Australia, skeleton weed is being contained mainly by eradication efforts. Weed …
