The Effect On Farm Profit Of Conserving Stubble To Prevent Wind Erosion, A D. Bathgate Jan 1989

The Effect On Farm Profit Of Conserving Stubble To Prevent Wind Erosion, A D. Bathgate

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Over-grazing of stubbles is a major cause of winf erosion on WesternAustralian farms. Stubble contributes to the 'roughness' of the paddock; as the roughness is reduced, the risk of winf erosion is increased.

The risk of lupinosis in sheep has previously reduced the likelihood of lupin stubble being over grazed, but the development of Gungurru, a phomopsis-resistent variety of lupin, has increased the potential for over-grazing and hence the probability of wind erosion.

This article describes the economic benefit (or cost) of conserving stubble at the conservation standards.

Pasture Species Evaluation On Acid Wodjil Soil - Machine Sown Plots., Bradley Nutt Jan 1989

Pasture Species Evaluation On Acid Wodjil Soil - Machine Sown Plots., Bradley Nutt

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 89TS38

Location: East Latham

The very low seed yields are a reflection of the dry winter conditions experienced in 1989. The Rose (T. hirtum) and Cupped (T. cherli) clovers appear to be a more promising option for this difficult soil type compared to other species. Paros yellow serradella performed well considering the trial site is located in a very dry area. The burr medics would not be an option on these acidic soil types because of nodulation failure; which should become evident in the regenerating swards.

The Nitrogen Response Of Wheat Crops Following Lupins, I C. Rowland, Mel Mason, John Hamblin Jan 1989

The Nitrogen Response Of Wheat Crops Following Lupins, I C. Rowland, Mel Mason, John Hamblin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

One of the many benefitsof growing narrow-leaved lupins in a crop rotation (Rowland et al 1988) in the increased yield of the following cereal crop as a result of the improved nitrogen level of the soil.

This article reports the results from 41 wheat/lupin rotation trials involving a range of nitrogen rates throughout the Western Australian agricultural area between 1978 and 1987. These trials allowed scientists to assess the interaction of nitrogen fertilization with previous cropping history and to estimate some of the contribution of the nitrogen and other effects of lupins within the crop rotations. The results provide some …

Water Erosion On Vegetable Growing Land In South Western Australia, D J. Mcfarlane, N D. Delroy, H V. Gratte, J P. Middlemas, A M E Van Vreeswyk, I Mckissock Jan 1989

Water Erosion On Vegetable Growing Land In South Western Australia, D J. Mcfarlane, N D. Delroy, H V. Gratte, J P. Middlemas, A M E Van Vreeswyk, I Mckissock

Resource management technical reports

The most serious erosion was found to be occurring in the Donnybrook area due to a combination of erosive winter rainfall, steep slopes and erodible soils. The most serious erosion was found to occur when storm runoff entered the vegetable plots from above, providing a transporting medium for the cultivated soil. A predictive model of erosion showed that soil texture, furrow slope, plot length, rainfall erosivity and canopy cover were significant factors affecting soil loss.

Trees For Windbreaks On Swan Coastal Plain Farms, Leon English, Ken Angell, Metropolitan District Office, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Jan 1989

Trees For Windbreaks On Swan Coastal Plain Farms, Leon English, Ken Angell, Metropolitan District Office, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

Strong easterly and south-westerly winds are a feature of the Swan Coastal Plain and we receive frequent inquiries about which tree species are suitable for planting as windbreaks. When selecting trees for windbreaks you must match the species to the various soil types which occur along the Coastal Plain. The mature height of the tree is also an important consideration in good windbreak design. This Bulletin lists species which are suitable for windbreaks in descending order of mature height and indicates the soil type(s) on which they should be planted.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trials : 88BY26, 88PE34, 88MD35

Control of Rhizoctonia solani infection of potato stems and daughter tubers was demonstrated by preplanting applications of tolclofos-methyl (RIZOLEX TM) to either cut or round seed tubers. Yield of tubers from cut seed treated with Rizolex was increased over that of cut seed cured before planting bu not when seed was cut and planted the same day. Crops grown from round seed treated with Rizolex yielded higher than from untreated round seed.

Surface sterilization of seed tubers with Sodium hypochlorite was effective in reducing stem damage but not in reducing daughter tuber sclerotes. This indicates …
