Fabricating Cost-Effective Nanostructures For Biomedical Applications, Erden Ertorer Sep 2013

Fabricating Cost-Effective Nanostructures For Biomedical Applications, Erden Ertorer

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this thesis we described inexpensive alternatives to fabricate nanostructures on planar substrates and provided example applications to discuss the efficiency of fabricated nanostructures.

The first method we described is forming large area systematically changing multi-shape nanoscale structures on a chip by laser interference lithography. We analyzed the fabricated structures at different substrate positions with respect to exposure time, exposure angle and associated light intensity profile. We presented experimental details related to the fabrication of symmetric and biaxial periodic nanostructures on photoresist, silicon surfaces, and ion-milled glass substrates. Behavior of osteoblasts and osteoclasts on the nanostructures was investigated. These results …

The Synthesis And Evaluation Of Peptide-Based Probes For The Imaging Of Rhamm Expressing Carcinoma And Glp-1r On Pancreatic Beta Cells, Ashley Esarik Sep 2013

The Synthesis And Evaluation Of Peptide-Based Probes For The Imaging Of Rhamm Expressing Carcinoma And Glp-1r On Pancreatic Beta Cells, Ashley Esarik

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Peptide-based probes are developed into imaging agents to target two different receptors: receptor for HA mediated motility (RHAMM) and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R).

In the first project, peptides are derived from tubulin and mimic HA (hyaluronan), the natural ligand of RHAMM. In order to develop the lead candidate peptides into imaging agents, a DOTA chelator which can coordinate a radiometal was coupled onto the lead peptides. Gallium labelling studies were performed and the labelled probes were used in in vivo mouse studies. Various analogues of two of the candidate peptides were also synthesized using bioisosteric, unnatural as well as …

Modeling Leafhopper Populations And Their Role In Transmitting Plant Diseases., Ji Ruan Aug 2013

Modeling Leafhopper Populations And Their Role In Transmitting Plant Diseases., Ji Ruan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This M.Sc. thesis focuses on the interactions between crops and leafhoppers.

Firstly, a general delay differential equations system is proposed, based on the infection age structure, to investigate disease dynamics when disease latencies are considered. To further the understanding on the subject, a specific model is then introduced. The basic reproduction numbers $\cR_0$ and $\cR_1$ are identified and their threshold properties are discussed. When $\cR_0 < 1$, the insect-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. When $\cR_0 > 1$ and $\cR_1 < 1$, the disease-free equilibrium exists and is locally asymptotically stable. When $\cR_1>1$, the disease will persist.

Secondly, we derive another general delay differential equations system to examine how different life stages of leafhoppers affect crops. The basic reproduction numbers $\cR_0$ is determined: when …

Ecological Constraints And The Evolution Of Cooperative Breeding, David Mcleod Aug 2013

Ecological Constraints And The Evolution Of Cooperative Breeding, David Mcleod

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Cooperative breeding is a social behaviour in which certain individuals will opt to delay or forgo their own reproduction in order to help other individuals. Cooperative breeding is one of the most conspicuous examples of cooperation in nature. However, theoretical understanding of why this behaviour occurs is lacking and contradictory. In this thesis, I examine the role played by ecological constraints on the emergence of cooperative breeding. Contrary to previous results, I find that ecological constraints do matter, provided the population dynamics are properly accounted for. I also examine the long-term evolutionary dynamics of cooperative breeding, and obtain the optimal …

The Role Of Metallothionein In Zinc Homeostasis, Kelly L. Summers Jul 2013

The Role Of Metallothionein In Zinc Homeostasis, Kelly L. Summers

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The structure of the unique metal-binding protein, metallothionein (MT), consists of two metal-thiolate-clustered binding domains; the β-domain binds up to three divalent metals and the α-domain binds four. The mechanisms through which the metals are bound and arranged into domains, as well as the function of MT in metal ion homeostasis, remains largely unknown. By utilizing electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS) to identify each species, and by comparing the data with simulations, MT 1a was found to bind Zn2+ non-cooperatively. Through a competition experiment between MT and its individual domain peptides, MT was proposed to bind Zn2+ …

Multiple Approaches For Assessing Mangrove Biophysical And Biochemical Variables Using In Situ And Remote Sensing Techniques, Francisco Javier Flores De Santiago Jun 2013

Multiple Approaches For Assessing Mangrove Biophysical And Biochemical Variables Using In Situ And Remote Sensing Techniques, Francisco Javier Flores De Santiago

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Mangrove forests are important ecosystems and play a key role in maintaining the equilibrium in coastal lagoons and estuaries. However, in recent years, there has been a considerable loss of mangrove extension due to anthropogenic activities. Recent studies suggest that multiple in situ and remote sensing approaches must be carried out to understand the dynamics in these complex ecosystems. Therefore, the objective for this PhD dissertation is to develop multiple techniques for monitoring the seasonal biophysical and biochemical conditions of the mangrove forests. Particular objectives will include: i. Test the feasibility of using a Chlorophyll Content Index from a …

Integrated Development And Parallelization Of Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identification Software To Expedite Biodosimetry Analysis, Yanxin Li Apr 2013

Integrated Development And Parallelization Of Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identification Software To Expedite Biodosimetry Analysis, Yanxin Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Manual cytogenetic biodosimetry lacks the ability to handle mass casualty events. We present an automated dicentric chromosome identification (ADCI) software utilizing parallel computing technology. A parallelization strategy combining data and task parallelism, as well as optimization of I/O operations, has been designed, implemented, and incorporated in ADCI. Experiments on an eight-core desktop show that our algorithm can expedite the process of ADCI by at least four folds. Experiments on Symmetric Computing, SHARCNET, Blue Gene/Q multi-processor computers demonstrate the capability of parallelized ADCI to process thousands of samples for cytogenetic biodosimetry in a few hours. This increase in speed underscores the …
