Taxonomy And Distribution Of Western Atlantic Bittium (Gastropoda: Mesogastropoda), Ella May Thomson Wulff
Taxonomy And Distribution Of Western Atlantic Bittium (Gastropoda: Mesogastropoda), Ella May Thomson Wulff
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The genus Bittium in the Western Atlantic was studied to determine the number and distribution of extant species. Shells of adults and juveniles collected from Brazil to Canada, including the type specimens of B. virginicum, were examined and compared on the basis of length, lengthwidth ratio and varix presence or absence. Although intergrades of B. alternatum and B. varium probably existed in the middle Chesapeake Bay, along the Atlantic shores of the Delmarva Peninsula and New Jersey, and in western Long Island Sound prior to 1940, B. alternatum is now found from Shark River, New Jersey, northward and B. varium …

Seasonal Distribution Of Dinoflagellates In The Lower York River, Virginia, Gail Brown Mackiernan
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Surface plankton samples were collected weekly over a 14-month period from the York River at Gloucester Point, Virginia. All dinoflagellates collected were identified to the species level when possible, and the relative abundance of each form was noted. The local dinoflagellate flora was examined with attention being given to environmental factors which might influence its composition. Special emphasis was placed on "red water" blooms.
One hundred eighteen separable forms, representing 20 genera of Pyrrhophyta, were collected. Of these, 84 were identified to the species level with reasonable certainty. Five of the 118 belonged to the class Desmophyceae, the remainder to …

Hydrozoa Of Southern Chesapeake Bay, Dale R. Calder
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Hydrozoans of southern Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries were studied from April 1965 until March 1968 to determine faunal diversity, seasonality and reproductive periodicities. Laboratory culture techniques were used in describing unknown or inadequately known stages in the life history of several species and as an aid in identification. A total of 55 species was identified, including 43 hydroids and 32 medusae. Of these, 22 hydroids and 15 medusae are reported in Chesapeake Bay for the first time. Two species earlier reported from the bay, Eudendrium carneum and Blackfordia virginica, were not found. Clytia paulensis and the hydroid of Proboscidactyla …

Intertidal Zonation Of Marine Algae At Gloucester Point, Virginia, Barry Lee Wulff
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A study was made of the intertidal zone of aged wooden pilings from February to June, 1967 at Gloucester Point Virginia, located in the lower York River estuary. Twenty-six species of marine algae were found grouped into three floristic zones.
Nine species were limited to below mean low water, whichialL.rlted the lowest cone. In this group there were six Rhodophyta and three Chlorophyta. Seven floral levels comprised the middle floristic zone between mean low water to a height of 74 cm above mean low water. These levels ere based on uppermost range extensions of sixteen species (six Cyanophyta, two Rhodophyta, one Phaeophyta …

Ecology Of Marine Invertebrate Fouling Organisms In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Dale R. Calder
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Investigations were conducted from 15 May 1964 to 3 January 1966 to determine the incidence, distribution, and abundance of marine invertebrate fouling organisms in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Dredging carried out at seven stations revealed that benthic organisms most likely to be involved in fouling were Thuiaria argentea, Alcyonidium verrilli, Microciona prolifera, Amathia vidovici, and Aeverrillia armata. All of these species occur in the Pier 12 berthing area of the Norfolk Naval Base, with. !· argentea and~- verrilli being most abundant. Detailed studies of the organisms attaching to asbestos fiber test panels were made at Pier 12 of the Naval Base. …
