Environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses are an increasingly popular tool for assessing biodiversity. eDNA sampling that uses invertebrates, or invertebrate DNA (iDNA), has become a more common method in mammal biodiversity studies where biodiversity is assessed via diet analysis of different coprophagous or hematophagous invertebrates. The carrion feeding family of beetles (Silphidae: Coleoptera, Latreille (1807)), have not yet been established as a viable iDNA source in primary scientific literature, yet could be useful indicators for tracking biodiversity in forested ecosystems. Silphids find carcasses of varying size for both food and reproduction, with some species having host preference for small mammals; therefore, …

Effects Of Fire On Ecosystem Carbon In The Upper Midwest And Northeast United States : A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen D. Handler
Effects Of Fire On Ecosystem Carbon In The Upper Midwest And Northeast United States : A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen D. Handler
Michigan Tech Publications
Prior to European settlement, fire was a common disturbance across most of the Midwest and Eastern United States. Today, prescribed fire is used as a management tool to promote native, fire-tolerant species and reduce vulnerability to high-intensity, unplanned fires. This primer discusses how prescribed fire affects ecosystem structure and function, with a primary focus on ecosystem carbon storage and sequestration. Management considerations related to the effects of prescribed fire on ecosystem carbon and greenhouse gas mitigation goals are discussed.

Evaluation Of Palatability And Nutrient Composition Of Terminalia Brownii (Fresen) Leaves Grown In Farm Land In Southern Ethiopia, Bayisa Bekele, Mohinder Singh Hooda, Asmelash Tesfaye
Evaluation Of Palatability And Nutrient Composition Of Terminalia Brownii (Fresen) Leaves Grown In Farm Land In Southern Ethiopia, Bayisa Bekele, Mohinder Singh Hooda, Asmelash Tesfaye
Journal of Bioresource Management
Fodder trees and shrubs are important diet and they can provide huge amount of nutrient for grazing animals specifically in areas where less amount of forage is found. The current study was conducted during the year of 2020-2021 at Southern Ethiopia with the objectives of evaluating the palatability and nutrient composition of Terminalia brownii leaves grown in farmland. Survey was conducted in the study area with a 5 % of the total HHs through selecting randomly from the kebeles resident list. Five samples from each management practice i.e. lopping, pollarding and pruning were taken and analyzed in the laboratory for …

Uncovering The Dynamic Nature Of Fire Refugia Across Landscapes In Oregon's Western Cascades, Alec Scott Dyer
Uncovering The Dynamic Nature Of Fire Refugia Across Landscapes In Oregon's Western Cascades, Alec Scott Dyer
Dissertations and Theses
With increased fire activity, the presence of fire refugia is critical to support forest resiliency and mitigate large-scale vegetation conversion, however, the persistence of fire refugia within burn perimeters over time is uncertain. This study examines the dynamic nature of fire refugia by mapping the decline in forest cover over time, identifying spatiotemporal patch- and landscape-scale patterns and the biophysical drivers of delayed mortality following the 2020 Labor Day Fires occurring in Oregon’s western Cascades. After three years post-fire, delayed mortality accounted for an additional 8.5% of forest loss (total of 24,147 hectares in all five burns) compared to pre-fire …

Evaluation Of Major Physical And Mechanical Properties Of Trembling Aspen Lumber, Dawei Wang, Mengyuan Zhang, Meng Gong, Ying-Hei Chui
Aspen Bibliography
Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is one of the major species within Populus, a predominant genus of hardwoods in North America. However, its utilization has been limited to pulp and paper or wood-based composite boards. This study aimed at evaluating the major physical and mechanical properties of trembling aspen lumber, with an ultimate objective of using this species to produce engineered wood products (EWPs). The testing materials consisted of 2 × 4 (38 mm × 89 mm) trembling aspen lumber pieces in lengths of 8, 10, and 12 feet (2.44, 3.05, and 3.66 m) with two visual grades, …

Mixing Trembling Aspen And White Spruce Increases The Understory Vegetation Cover And Improves Soil Properties But Effects Vary With Broadleaf Density, Mostarin Ara, Bradley D. Pinno, Philip G. Comeau
Aspen Bibliography
Despite the importance of species mixtures to ecosystem-based forest management, density effect of broadleaf trees in the mixture on understory vegetation and soil properties are poorly understood. In this study, we examine the effects of trembling aspen [aspen] (Populus tremuloides Michx.) -white spruce [ spruce] (Picea glauca (Moench) Vos) mixtures that vary in the proportion of aspen on understory vegetation cover, soil nutrient supply rates, and soil properties. Data were collected from an established study located in Alberta, Canada at age 20 and included the following treatments: 1. Natural regeneration of pure aspen; 2. Retaining only …
