Effects Of Controlled Overdrying On Some Physical Characteristics Of Paper Related To Printing Press Performance, Kenneth C. Pearson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of certain drying variables on some physical strength properties when these variables were controlled to bring about overdrying conditions. The variables under study were length of time and degree of temperature in relation to amount of drying produced. The results were then related to dimensional stability, tensile, stretch and mullen in an attempt to establish a relationship of overdrying to these physical characteristics.

The dimensional stability was run on the Neenah Multiple Specimen Expansimeter with tensile, stretch and mullen all run according to respective Tappi Standards.

From the study it …

The Local Interest As A Consideration In The Planning Of Highway Construction In The Canyonlands Region Of Southeastern Utah, Robert L. Barry

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An examination was conducted of the potential of proposed highway construction for serving the needs and interests of the population of the Canyonlands Region of southeastern Utah. The history of the highway development issue in the region was first examined with special attention given to the local position on the issue as expressed by local government spokesmen. Next, the total system of development proposals for the region was divided into four sections using criteria of area served and degree of controversy. A map analysis was conducted to determine how these four separate proposals would serve transportation needs of the region. …

A Description Of Anglers And Angling Use In Two Areas Of The Uinta Mountains, John F. Hoagland May 1973

A Description Of Anglers And Angling Use In Two Areas Of The Uinta Mountains, John F. Hoagland

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The High Uinta Primitive Area, Utah's most popular high mountain recreation area, has a reputation as an excellent trout and grayling fishery. Proposed for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System, the area faces several management dilemmas. The primary problem being that managers must protect the resource from the effects of heavy recreational use without destroying the primitive and aesthetic dimensions of wilderness environment. It appears that much impact on the more accessible lakes is due to fishing use. The objectives of the study were: (1) to determine the proportions of angling to non-angling groups; (2) to describe certain characteristics …

Criteria For Recreation Site Selection On Flood Control Reservoirs-Case Studies, Kenneth B. Mclaughlin May 1973

Criteria For Recreation Site Selection On Flood Control Reservoirs-Case Studies, Kenneth B. Mclaughlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stephen F. Austin State University was awarded a contract in August 1971 to select the 1,200 acres best suited for recreation area development on three proposed flood control reservoirs. At that time, there was no central publication which could be used as a guide for such a project. This thesis was written to help correct this situation. The nine factors that were used in initial site selection are soils, topography, access, wind, vegetation, land ownership, distribution of the sites, bridges and open-water and cove locations. Once the sites were selected, they were evaluated and assigned priorities for development according to …

A Linear Programming Decision Model For Elk And Deer Management On The Logan Peak Winter Range Area, Ronald P. Grove May 1973

A Linear Programming Decision Model For Elk And Deer Management On The Logan Peak Winter Range Area, Ronald P. Grove

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One consequence of our surging human population is the corresponding increased level of resource consumption. This occurrence renders it imperative that resource managers intensify their management of the world's natural resources. Failure to improve management techniques involving the use of these resources will result in premature depletion of non-renewable commodities and severe checks on the vigor of renewable resources.

Management is faced with the difficult task of searching for astute means of allocating natural resources. Because of the tremendous size and complexity of the natural world, the problem can be extremely complicated.

Mathematical techniques have proved useful in providing natural …

Dry Matter And Minerals In Loblolly Pine Plantation On Four Arkansas Soils, Timothy T. Ku, James D. Burton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Average contents of N, P, K, Ca, and Na and total above ground dry matter were determined in 19-year-old unthinned loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in southeastern Arkansas. Three stands were sampled on each of four sites: well and poorly drained coastal plain soils and well and poorly drained loessial soils. Total dry weights, determined from 15 felled trees on each of the 12 plots, ranged from 127,000 kg/ha on poorly drained loessial soil to 173,300 kg/ha on poorly drained coastal plain soil. Ranking of sites, in descending order of production of dry matter, P, K, and Na was: …

Wood Production And Kraft Pulping Of Short-Rotation Hardwoods In The Pacific Northwest, Fred L. Schmidt, Dean S. Debell Jan 1973

Wood Production And Kraft Pulping Of Short-Rotation Hardwoods In The Pacific Northwest, Fred L. Schmidt, Dean S. Debell

Aspen Bibliography

For decades foresters and fiber-using industries throughout the world have been concerned with the problem of future procurement of wood fiber. Research has progressed on several promising approaches to this problem, including fertilization, genetic improvement, better control of competition, and more complete utilization. Recently another alternative has been suggested --- the production of hardwood fiber on very short rotations with coppice regrowth. The concept was first proposed by McAlpine et al. (1966) under the name, "silage sycamore". Since that time, tests of "silage" forestry have been initiated with other hardwood species in many regions of the United State and Canada …
