The Delphacidae Of Yukon Territory, Canada (Homoptera: Fulgoroidea), Stephen W. Wilson

Twenty nine species of Delphacidae are recorded from the Yukon Territory, Canada, two additional ones from an adjacent region of Northwest Territories, and one species from coastal Alaska. Two new genera are described: Aschedelphax Wilson and Yukonodelphax Wilson. Six new species are described: Aschedelphax hochae Wilson, Delphacodes anufrievi Wilson, D. emeljanovi Wilson, Javesella lla Wilson, Nothodelphax glacia Wilson, and Yukonodelphax kendallae Wilson. Aschedelphax coloradensis (Beamer), Javesella kilmani (Van Duzee), Yukonodelphax pediforma (Beamer) and Y. stramineosa (Beamer) are new combinations. Kusnezoviella matisi Anufriev and Emeljanov is a junior synonym of K. macleani Wilson and Delphacodes hyalina Beamer is a junior synonym …

The annulatipes group of the genus Forcipomyia Meigen, subgenus Lepidohelea Kieffer, is represented in the Western Hemisphere by 12 species. Keys are presented for their identification, and to distinguish them from other groups of the subgenus Lepidohelea. Trends In Overwintering Egg Populations Of A Pine Sawfly, Neodiprion Autumnalis, On Ponderosa Pine Sampled In January And December 1991 Near Ft. Meade In South Dakota, Judith E. Pasek, Willis C. Schaupp Jr

In 1990 and 1991, a number of outbreaks of the pine sawfly, Neodiprion autumnalis, were reported in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. Near Ft. Meade in South Dakota, defoliation in 1990 was heavy at the center of the infestation and decreased to light defoliation at a distance of 1 mile from the center. Defoliation at the same location in 1991 appeared to range from heavy to moderate.

Three sites near Ft. Meade that were sampled in January 1991 were resurveyed in December 1991 to assess changes in overwintering egg populations and degree of defoliation and to determine the potential …

Occurrence Of The Milliped, Stenodesmus Tuobitus (Chamberlin), West Of The Rio Grande (Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae), Rowland M. Shelley

New records of the xystodesmid diplopod Stenodesmus tuobitus (Chamberlin) extend its range and those of the family and suborder Chelodesmidea into southwestern New Mexico, west of the Rio Grande. They confirm that it inhabits arid juniper environments at relatively low elevations as well as moist deciduous fir forests at high elevations, thereby lending credence to past records from the former habitat in Lincoln County. Discovery of the milliped in neighboring mountain ranges to the north and west is now likely, with the distant possibility that it may occur in eastern Arizona.

Affinities, diagnoses, and descriptions are provided for two new species of Plusiotis: P. spectabilis from an unknown locality in Central America and P. dianae from Veracruz state in Mexico. Plusiotis spectabilis is described from a single female and is the largest species in the genus (41 mm in length).

There has been little recent research on control of damage by the white pine weevil, and available insecticides have been few and have become obsolete. Tests in Canada suggested that the insect growth-regulating chemical diflubenzeron was effective, and we have successfully repeated those tests in Maine using several formulations of Dimilin and several ground application systems. Aerial trials have not succeeded; the probable reasons for their failure are discussed. We present a general description of the weevil and its damage, approaches to control of damage, and specific recommendations for use of ground applications of Dimilin, which has recently become registered …

Ommatius fimbriatus and O. subtus are based upon four specimens embedded in Dominican amber from the El Mamey Formation in the Dominican Republic. The amber is from the Lower Oligocene - Upper Eocene, originating between 25 and 40 million years ago. The specimens are the first reported fossils of Ommatius. Both species are described and compared with modern species. Significant characters are illustrated and/or photographed.

Distribution Of The Centipede Scolopocryptops Sexspinosus (Say) In Alaska And Canada (Scolopendromorpha: Cryptopidae), Rowland M. Shelley

Specific Alaskan and Canadian localities are recorded for the chilopod Scolopocryptops sexspinosus (Say) (Cryptopidae), the only indigenous Nearctic scolopendromorph species occurring north of the lower 48 states. It occurs west of the crest of the Coast Range in British Columbia, extending northward to the southernmost islands of Alaska, and is recorded for the first time from eastern Canada, from Niagara Gorge, Ontario. Reports of S. rubiginosus Koch from southern Alaska are based on a misidentification of S. sexspinosus, and records from the north-central United States are too distant from the international border for it to be plausible for Manitoba …

One hundred forty-five species of caddisflies representing 15 families and 46 genera are reported from Oklahoma. Thirty-nine species are new state records. Families having the greatest species richness were Hydroptilidae (44 species), Leptoceridae (31 species), Hydropsychidae (26 species), and Polycentropodidae (13 species).

A new status is proposed for the genera Glabromyzus Richards, 1960 and Juncomyzus Hille Ris Lambers, 1965, which are now treated as subgenera of Carolinaia Wilson, 1911. The relationship between Carolinaia and Utamphorophoro Knowlton, 1947 is discussed. The new name C. (C.) tissoti is given for Carolinaia rhois Tissot, 1928 nec rhois Monell, 1879. The species known as Juncomyzus rhois (Takahashi, 1924) becomes C. (J.) japonica (Takahashi, 1961). The oviparous female of C. (G.) schlingeri, C. (J.) japonica, and C. (J.) nigra are described as well as the alate viviparous female and the male of the last species. …

An undescribed genus and species of flightless longhorned beetle, Apteralcidion lupierrei new genus, new species, in the subfamily Lamiinae, has been collected from giant thistle, Cirsium subcoriaccum, at high elevations in Costa Rica and Panama. This new taxon appears most-closely related to genera in the tribe Acanthocini.

Populations Of Douglas-Fir Beetle In Green Trees Three Years After The Clover Mist Fire On The Clarks Fork Ranger District, Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming, Judith Pasek, Willis Schaupp

Brood densities of Douglas-fir beetle (DFB), Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, in green trees adjoining areas burned by the 1988 Clover Mist Fire varied by site, but averaged 8 per 36 sq. in. for bark samples at all sites examined during November 1991. Brood densities were much reduced from 1990 levels, but were similar to densities found in blackened trees in fall 1989. The reduction from 1990 levels was attributed to heavy winter mortality of brood caused by prolonged extreme cold temperatures. Increasing and epidemic populations of the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) were detected and evaluated in the southcentral Black Hills. Mortality of ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws., in the area increased each year since 1988 and was six times greater in 1991 than in 1989. Survey results indicate an average of 29 trees killed per acre by this bark beetle from 1989 through 1991 in the Bearhouse project area. Infestation is especially concentrated in the Bear Mountain Basin area, where between 27 and 103 trees per acre have been killed, and a large beetle population …

Cyclocephala aravaipensis n.sp. and C. warneri n.sp. are described from Arizona, U.S.A. and Chiapas, Mexico, respectively. An unusual melanistic form of C. melanocephala (Fab.) is reported from two localities in northeastern Quintana Roo, Mexico.

To determine potentially suitable alternative food sources for important native bee pollinators of blueberry, the primary objectives of the present research were (1) to compile the published North American nectar, pollen, and flower records; (2) to analyze the pollen loads of native bees associated with Vaccinium spp. in Maine; and (3) to survey distribution and abundance patterns of native bee populations in Maine blueberry fields.
