The New World species of Octotoma are revised and keys, diagnoses, and descriptions are provided for the nine known species. The authorship of the genus belongs to Chevrolat rather than Dejean. Octotoma intermedia, from Mexico, is described as new.

Diversity Of Coprophagous Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) In Grazed Versus Ungrazed Sandhills Prairie In Western Nebraska, Mary Liz Jameson

Baited pitfall traps were used to compare the dung-feeding Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) of a grazed versus an ungrazed sandhills prairie in western Nebraska. Traps yielded 14,832 coprophagous Scarabaeidae over a 4-week sampling period in 1987. Canthon ebenus (Say), C. pilurarius (L.), Onthophagous hecate Panzer, and O. pennsylvanicus Harold were the dominant species on both prairies. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index indicated that diversity was slightly higher on the grazed site, whereas the Margalef diversity index showed the diversities to be nearly the same. Activity and foraging by scarabs (as measured by trapping success) were found to be most closely correlated with temperature …

The Dynastinae of the World by the late Sebo Endrodi was published in 1985. This long-awaited book condensed into one English language volume Endrodi's series of 22 principal papers on the entire subfamily Dynastinae. Judging from conversations and correspondence with colleagues, the book has been very well received. . .as well it should have been for it will provide a framework for all future studies on the Dynastinae.

The three species in the genus Areoda are reviewed for the first time. The genus is characterized, a key to species is provided, each species is described, spatial and temporal distributions are given, and the biogeography is discussed. We consider their distribution to be isolated and relictual in the Atlantic coastal forests of southeastern Brazil.

Scientific Note: A Case Of Gynandromorphy In Golofa Tersander Burmeister (Coleoptra: Scarabaeidae), Brett C. Ratcliffe

Golofa tersander is a sexually dimorphic species with males possessing a long, slender horn arising from the frons, a distinct pronotal tubercle anteriorly, a strongly convex pygidium, and an apically emarginate last sternite. Females, on the other hand, have only a tubercle on the frons, lack a pronotal tubercle, possess a relatively flat pygidium, and the last sternite is entire apically. Both of the specimens described here exhibit all of these external male character states just mentioned.

Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, sex pheromone, racemic 8-methyl-2-decyl-propanoate (MDP) was successfully encapsulated in a starch borate (5B) matrix creating a controlled release granular formulation. The release rate of MDP from starch borate granules was attractive to male D. virgifera at high and low D. virgifera population levels in field corn. Male D. virgifera were attracted to the 5B-MDP granules throughout the growing season, but efficacy declined during the period of peak female D. virgifera emergence and corn pollination. The 5B-MDP delivery system was as effective as a septa-MDP delivery system, and 5B-MDP formulations had a shelf life …

Residual Toxicity Of Some Fluoroaliphatic Sulfones To The Red Imported Fire Ant, C. S. Lofgren, W. A. Banks, R. K. Vander Meer, D. F. Williams

Thirty-six fluoroaliphatic sulfones were tested to determine their residual toxicity to Solenopsis invicta Buren in soil. Six of the compounds gave >90% kill of the ants after they were exposed for 4 days at 10 ppm. When tested at 1.0 ppm, only one compound, AI3-10841, gave appreciable mortality. This compound was tested at 10 ppm in soil held outdoors under ambient summer conditions. Mortality 8 days following initial exposure to samples of this soil was 100% for 12 weeks and 91 to 100% from 20 to 36 weeks.
