Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of adding coarse wheat bran with reduced crude protein level in diets without pharmacological levels of zinc oxide on the growth performance and fecal dry matter of nursery pigs. Our objective was to determine if a low-crude protein diet with an added fiber source might provide similar growth performance and reduce the incidence of scours in weanling pigs compared to a typical, high-protein diet with added Zn. A total of 1,296 pigs (L337 × 1050; PIC, Hendersonville, TN; initially 10.6 lb) were used in a 42-d study to evaluate the addition of cellulose in diets with and without the inclusion of pharmacological levels of Zn on nursery pig growth performance. The objective of this study was to determine the effects on growth performance in nursery pigs that is linked to the conditioning temperature and die specifications used during the feed pelleting process. A total of 315 barrows (DNA; 200 × 400; initial BW 13.2 lb) were used in a 35-d growth trial. Canola co-products have a high content of fiber and glucosinolates. Fiber reduces nutrient utilization in pigs, whereas glucosinolates are degraded to toxic products, which interfere with liver, kidney and thyroid functions. Negative effects of fiber can potentially be alleviated by fiber-degrading enzymes, whereas negative effects of glucosinolates in pigs can potentially be alleviated through reduction in hindgut pH. However, there is a lack of information on effects of supplemental fiberdegrading enzymes on digestion and fermentation characteristics of canola coproducts for pigs. Ensuring the health and wellbeing of pigs is of the utmost importance to the swine industry. There is a need for a real-time system that can identify changes in pig activities and activity patterns to accurately identify compromised pigs. The value of a real-time system is the capability to identify compromised pigs prior to observance of visible clinical symptoms by facility personnel. Therefore, a novel computer vision depth-enabled identification and tracking (DeIT) system was evaluated. A total of 360 pigs [DNA (Columbus, NE) 400 × 200; initially = 14.8 ± 0.15 lb] were used to evaluate the effects of dietary medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) addition on fecal microbial populations. A total of 1,080 barrows and gilts (PIC; 337 × Camborough, initial pen average BW of 25.2 ± 0.64 lb) were used in a 21-d trial to determine the standardized total tract digestible (STTD) P requirement of nursery pigs from 25 to 50 lb. A total of 360 pigs [DNA (Columbus, NE) 400 × 200; initial BW = 14.8 lb] were used to evaluate the effects of dietary medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) addition on nursery pig performance. Upon arrival to the nursery, pigs were randomized to pens (5 pigs per pen) and allowed a 6-d acclimation period, at which point pens of pigs were blocked by BW and randomized to dietary treatment (9 pens per treatment). A total of 360 nursery pigs (PIC 1050 × 280, initially 13.3 ± 2.39 lb) were used in a 45-d growth study to determine the effects of feeding 2 standardized total tract digestible (STTD) P and 3 Ca concentrations on growth performance. In a completely randomized design, pens of pigs (10 pigs per pen, 6 pens per treatment) were allotted randomly to 1 of 6 dietary treatments. DL-Methionine (Met) has been conventionally used in swine diets with assumption of similar bioefficacy with L-Met. However, because L-Met is the form that is utilized by animals for protein synthesis, L-Met could, theoretically, be more available. Four experiments were conducted to evaluate L-Met bioavailability in nursery pigs with 21-day growth trials. A total of 105,105,112 and 84 crossbred pigs were used in Exp. 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Each experiment had a low Met basal diet and 3 levels of the Met sources (DL-Met and L-Met).
