Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The River Otter (Lutra Canadensis) In Ditches Of The Great Dismal Swamp, Ronnie M. Pierce
Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The River Otter (Lutra Canadensis) In Ditches Of The Great Dismal Swamp, Ronnie M. Pierce
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
To determine the seasonal feeding habits of the river otter (Lutra canadensis) in the Great Dismal Swamp 209 scats were collected, from May 1977 to May 1978, and analyzed for content. Remains of crayfish were found with a frequency of occurrence of 82% while fish remains occurred in 62% of the scat. This is in direct contrast to previous studies (from other areas) which found fish with a greater frequency than crayfish. Fish consumption was believed to increase during periods of low water or low temperatures. Sunfish were represented most frequently and may be the preferred fish. Amphiuma remains …
Swimming As A Determinate To Immigration For Two Small Mammals In Coastal Virginia, Jeffrey Lewis Carter
Swimming As A Determinate To Immigration For Two Small Mammals In Coastal Virginia, Jeffrey Lewis Carter
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Small mammals were live trapped on the mainland and on an island located in the southeast corner of Virginia. The area was characterized by a mid-Atlantic coastal climate. White-footed mice (Perompsous fsucopus) were trapped on the mainland but not on the island, whereas meadow voles (Microtus psnnsylvimious) inhabited only the island. A series of swimming tests were performed in both the field and in the laboratory on both of these species to determine if swimming abilities could be the factor preventing Pszomysous from colonizing the island.
Both species of small mammals showed good swimming endurance in …

Tb89: Motor And Elective Activity Of The Duodenum Of Broilers, C. Mba-Mezoui, F. H. Bird, C. B. Chawan
Technical Bulletins
Recordings of pressure changes and electrical activity from the proximal small intestine of seven to eight-week-old unanesthetized chickens were made with chronically implanted transducers. The recordings were used to quantitate and determine the relationships among basic electric rhythm (BER), spike potentials (SP), and intestinal contractions (IC) of the duodenum. The omnipresence of the BER was demonstrated. SP were recorded whenever IC were detected. SP numbers and amplitudes were directly related to the strength of IC. Acetylcholine caused a general increase in the number and amplitude of both SP and IC. Epinephrine completely abolished both SP and IC. The results suggest …

A Study Of Leased Oyster Ground In Hampton River In The Vicinity Of The I-64 Bridge, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall
Reports
In 1975 a study was completed by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) entitled "An Environmental Assessment of the Hampton .River and Vicinity." This was for federal project I-64 (142)240 - State Project 0064-114-103. It was completed for Sverdrup and Parcel Consulting Engineers, St. Louis, Missouri. A part of this report consisted of an .evaluation of the molluscan resource in a zone 600 feet wide on either side of the existing bridge. Leased as well as public bottoms were studied.
This report concluded that "the present level of production and the potential productivity (of the area) are low." Since …

An Analysis Of Trees Marked By Black Bears In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Thomas L. Burst
An Analysis Of Trees Marked By Black Bears In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Thomas L. Burst
Masters Theses
With the study area for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 691 black bear (Ursus americanus) mark trees were located. Mark trees along 135 km of preselected index trails were tagged, physiognomic parameters around the trees measured, and characteristics of the tree and mark recorded. Trees along the index trails were reobserved periodically from April to December, 1976-1977, to monitor fresh marking. Additional mark trees located away from manmade trails were characterized and classified as to their position on the slope. Multivariate analyses on an around mark tree were attempted to further delineate the relationship between environmental parameters …
