The Development And Comparative Morphology Of The Mandibular Symphysis In Salamanders, Jennifer Lorenz Elwood Oct 1988

The Development And Comparative Morphology Of The Mandibular Symphysis In Salamanders, Jennifer Lorenz Elwood

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Despite the extensive literature on salamander cranial morphology, few authors mention the structure or development of the mandibular symphysis. Adult specimens representing eight caudate families and larval Ambystoma opacum, representing nine developmental stages, were evaluated histologically to determine the structure and development of the mandibular symphysis.

From this analysis it was determined that early in the ontogeny of the mandibular symphysis Meckel's cartilages are separated by a band of undifferentiated cartilage. As development progresses, this band of undifferentiated cartilage gradually transforms into a wedge of fibrocartilage which fuses to Meckel's cartilages.

Symphyseal morphologies of the adult caudates could be broken …

A Review Of The Pacific Members Of The Gobiid Fish Genus Bollmannia Jordan, Robin L. Bedenbaugh Oct 1988

A Review Of The Pacific Members Of The Gobiid Fish Genus Bollmannia Jordan, Robin L. Bedenbaugh

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The Pacific members of the genus Bollmannia Jordan 1890 comprise seven species of gobies distributed from Baja California to Peru and west to the Galapagos Archipelago.

Previous authors recognized nine nominal species, all known only from their brief original accounts. Those accounts do not allow for proper discrimination of the species. All nominal species were re examined using meristic, morphometric, and pigment-pattern characteristics. Three of the nine nominal species are herein considered synonymous with previously described forms. The six valid nominal species are redescribed, a new species is described, and a key and illustrations are provided for the seven valid …

A Light And Electron Microscopic Study Of The Rat Olfactory Tubercle: Normal Morphology And Acetylcholinesterase Localization, James Curtis Woodley Jul 1988

A Light And Electron Microscopic Study Of The Rat Olfactory Tubercle: Normal Morphology And Acetylcholinesterase Localization, James Curtis Woodley

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A cytoarchitectural analysis of the rat olfactory tubercle using Nissl-stained coronal sections revealed that the dense cell layer (DCL) consisted of medium sized striatal cells in the cortical regions and small sized "granule" cells in the cap regions. Also delineated from this experiment was a rim of neuropil, nearly devoid of neurons as well as neuronal processes, outlining the islands of Calleja. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) localization utilizing light microscopy revealed that the olfactory tubercles (OT) contained AChE-positive fibers that were orientated dorsoventrally in the molecular and multiform layers. The DCL consisted of only fibers en passant and putative terminals. Diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) …

The Occurrence Of Fish Remains In Modern Lake Systems : A Test Of The Stratified-Lake Mode, Douglas R. Britton Jun 1988

The Occurrence Of Fish Remains In Modern Lake Systems : A Test Of The Stratified-Lake Mode, Douglas R. Britton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Theories regarding the taphonomy of fishes in lacustrine environments have traditionally relied on an anoxic water column to explain the excellent preservation. This concept has never been directly tested in modern lacustrine environments that are thought to be analogous to the lacustrine environments predicted by the Stratified-lake Model. This research tested that model by searching for fish remains in 38 collected bottom samples of six modern lacustrine analogues, including Fayetteville Green Lake, New York. The bottom sediments of a warm, holomictic, shallow, and saline lake (Salton Sea, California) were also examined. Although laminated sediments were found in all of the …

Problems And Opportunities For The Republic Of China In Regard To Distant Water Tuna Fisheries, Chih-I Sha May 1988

Problems And Opportunities For The Republic Of China In Regard To Distant Water Tuna Fisheries, Chih-I Sha

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The extension of fishery jurisdiction out to 200 miles from the baselines used to measure the territorial sea by most of the coastal states was the dominant event in global fisheries during the decade of the 1970s. In principle, under extended jurisdiction, the coastal states have the authority to eliminate economic waste and to reduce excessive fishing pressure; on the other hand, the distant water fishing states will have to curtail their fishing activities from the traditional fishing grounds off the coastal states. The Republic of China is a typical distant water fishing state, and is seriously impacted by the …

Luteinizing Hormone An Progesterone Response To Gnrh Administration At Insemination In Repeat-Breeder Holstein Cows, Robert Joseph Callan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Several studies suggest that the administration of GnRH near the time of insemination improves pregnancy rates in cattle. It has also been reported that there is greater improvement in repeat-breeder animals than at first service. The mechanism for this observation has not been established. Twenty-eight lactating Holstein cows that returned to estrus after one or more inseminations from the USU Caine Dairy were used in the study. Animals were randomly divided into two treatment groups, intramuscular administration of 100 ug GnRH or saline control at the time of insemination. Blood samples were collected at 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 and …

Milk production level was expressed as relative value (percent of herd mature equivalent production). There were no differences between treated and untreated control cows in pregnancy rate. In addition, there were no differences between service number (3 or 4), relative value group, …

Nitrogen And Energy Budgets Of Production Ewes On Summer Range In Southwestern Utah, John W. Halpop May 1988

Nitrogen And Energy Budgets Of Production Ewes On Summer Range In Southwestern Utah, John W. Halpop

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen (N) and energy budgets for free-roaming ewes were quantified on mountain summer range in southwestern Utah in 1986 and 1987. Diet quality (%N), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), and energy were estimated with the use of five esophageally fistulated ewes. Excretion rates of N and energy to feces and urine were measured by total collection from five nonfistualted ewes.

Total intake N(gN/(MBW*d-1) tracked intraseasonal changes of dietary N percent but was apparently buffered by fluctuations in dry matter intake. In each year, total urine N was closely related to dietary N concentration, r2=0.97 (1986) …

Age And Growth Of The Tautog, Tautoga Onitis (Pisces: Labridae), From Lower Chesapeake Bay And Coastal Waters Of Virginia, E. Brian Hostetter Apr 1988

Age And Growth Of The Tautog, Tautoga Onitis (Pisces: Labridae), From Lower Chesapeake Bay And Coastal Waters Of Virginia, E. Brian Hostetter

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The tautog, Tautoga onitis (Pisces: Labridae), is rapidly gaining popularity in Virginia by anglers, spearfishermen and specialized commercial interests. In Virginia, tautog are seasonally abundant on hard bottom substrates in nearshore (ca. 2-10 m) habitats and inhabit offshore wrecks and reef areas (ca. 10-30 m) year round. Habitat restriction and slow growth of the species coupled with recent technological advances in marine electronics which simplify locating tautog populations by user groups may contribute to overexploitation of tautog within the region.

Tautog were collected over a two year period from the lower Chesapeake Bay and nearshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean …

A Case For The Decentralization Of Tuna Management: The East Pacific Tuna Fishery, Mark Alexander Murray-Brown Jan 1988

A Case For The Decentralization Of Tuna Management: The East Pacific Tuna Fishery, Mark Alexander Murray-Brown

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The east pacific tuna fishery has been a highly controversial industry due to a variety of biological, economic and political factors. Tuna are a highly migratory species and are known to move across areas of the ocean that are claimed by different nations. The high economic value of the tuna fishery has enhanced the dispute over the positioning of many of these national boundaries. During the middle of the twentieth century international fishery organizations were created in an attempt to resolve many of the issues. The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) was created to make management recommendations to maintain the …

Other species encountered in abundance during this …

Invertebrates Associated With The Pincushion Moss (Leucobryum Glaucum) And Underlying Soil, Timothy R. Leffler Jan 1988

Invertebrates Associated With The Pincushion Moss (Leucobryum Glaucum) And Underlying Soil, Timothy R. Leffler

Masters Theses

A faunal study of soil invertebrates collected from pincushion moss (Leucobryum glaucum) and underlying soil in a mixed deciduous forest of Charleston, Illinois, was performed because it was discovered that moss habitats have been largely overlooked by investigators.

The results from this study suggest that moss habitats provide a buffer area from the external physical environment, provide protection from predators, a place for oviposition and may be used as a food source. Twenty-seven orders of invertebrates were collected (66,023 individuals). Acarina (57.9%) and Collembola (37.9%) made up the majority of the invertebrate population. Three abiotic factors (temperature, moisture …

Behavior And Ecology Of Sea Turtles From Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Richard Allan Byles Jan 1988

Behavior And Ecology Of Sea Turtles From Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Richard Allan Byles

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Immature foraging sea turtles occupy Chesapeake Bay, Virginia annually from May through November. Telemetry was used to monitor the movements and behavior of loggerhead, Caretta caretta, and Kemp's ridley, Lepidochelys kempi, turtles during 1981-1985. Both species utilized the estuary for summer foraging, but exhibited habitat-preference and behavioral differences that amounted to resource partitioning between the species. Loggerheads oriented towards major river outflows and tended to move along channel sides with the tidal flow while ridleys occupied shallower foraging areas and did not range as far with the tide. Strong site tenacity was displayed by both species once foraging areas were …
