Juvenile Finfish And Blue Crab Stock Assessment Program Bottom Trawl Survey Annual Data Report Series, Volume 1991, Christopher F. Bonzek, Patrick J. Geer, James A. Colvocoresses, Robert E. Harris
Reports
This report presents a summary page for each tow conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Juvenile Fish and Blue Crab Trawl Survey during 1991. The sampling methods and summarized data are presented in Bonzek et al. (1992). Data analysis and calculations of juvenile indices for selected species are presented in Colvocoresses et al. (1991). The purpose of this report is simply to provide a "hard copy" record of trawl results. It also provides a method to retrieve information about one or several particular trawls without consulting computerized archives. · · All data about each tow are presented, except …

Environmental Control Of Perkinsus Marinus And Elucidation Of Over Wintering Infections : Final Report, Eugene M. Burreson, Lisa M. Ragone Calvo
Reports
The role of low temperature and low salinity in controlling P. marinus was investigated under laboratory conditions which simulated typical and extreme winter and spring environmental conditions.

Develop A Chesapeake Bay-Wide Young-Of-The-Year Striped Bass Index : Final Report To The Chesapeake Bay Stock Assessment Committee (Cbsac), Herbert M. Austin, James A. Colvocoresses, Thomas C. Mosca
Reports
The objective of this study has been to develop a proportionally weighted Baywide young-of-the-year Chesapeake Bay striped bass index which incorporates data from all major nursery areas of the Chesapeake Bay. In doing so three approaches were used. The first entailed simple computation of both arithmetic and geometric indices. These were computed for historical continuity. The second approach involved a weighting by the commercial landings from each river during the spawning seasons from 1973-1981. The third approach used the area of the spawning grounds and distance of shoreline adjacent to the nursery grounds. Finally, an effort at validation was made …
Criteria For Predicting Zebra Mussel Invasions In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Patrick Baker, Shirley Baker, Roger Mann
Criteria For Predicting Zebra Mussel Invasions In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Patrick Baker, Shirley Baker, Roger Mann
Reports
What is the probability that zebra mussels will invade specific bodies of water within a given state? If they do invade, will they become economic and ecological pests as they have in portions of the Great Lakes? These and similar questions are addressed, with the expectation that management strategies can be developed to delay, mitigate, or possibly even prevent zebra mussel invasions, in some areas.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Specimens of Spiculopteragia spiculoptera and S. asymmetrica were recovered from the abomasa of five of ten naturally infected red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Texas (USA). Female specimens of Spiculopteragia were present in all five animals. Male specimens of S. spiculoptera and S. asymmetrica were present in one of five and three of five red deer, respectively. Spiculopteragia spiculoptera has not previously been recognized in the United States and the present report constitutes the first records of Spiculopteragia spp. in red deer from North America. It is likely that species of Spiculopteragia have been introduced to North America with …

Enteric Coccidia (Apicomplexa) In The Small Intestine Of The Northern Spotted Owl (Strix Occidentalis Caurina), Eric P. Hoberg, R. J. Cawthorn, O. R. Hedstrom
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Sporulated oocysts (mean dimensions = 13.0 x 10.8 μm) and sporocysts (11.3 x 5.5 μm) of a coccidian resembling Frenkelia sp. or Sarcocystis sp. were present in the lamina propria of the small intestine of a naturally-infected northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) collected near Medford, Oregon, USA. Dimensions of these oocysts and sporocysts appear to be considerably smaller than those from other sarcocystid species with avian definitive hosts. Additionally, numerous developmental stages and unsporulated oocysts (mean dimensions 22.8 x 17.8 μm) of a possible species of Isospora also were observed in the intestinal epithelium. This constitutes the …
