A specialty pepper cultivar trial was planted at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (42.081985, -86.354087, Benton Harbor, Michigan). Bejo (BJ), Johnny’s Seeds (JO), Seminis (SE), Tozer (TZ), and US Agriseeds (UA) seed companies donated six jalapeno cultivars, nine lunchbox cultivars, and two tapered 5-inch cultivars for plastic-mulch bedded and trellised hand harvest. Trial quality was excellent.

HM Clause (HM), PanAmerican (PA), Rupp (RP), Sakata (SK), and US Agriseeds (UA) seed companies donated four zucchini cultivars, three patty pan cultivars, and one yellow summer squash cultivar for plastic-mulch bedded hand harvest. Trial quality was excellent.

Objective: To improve the yield and antibacterial rate of antimicrobial peptides from Pleurotus tuber-regium mycelium (PTRM-AMPs). Methods: Taking the yield and the antibacterial rate of PTRM-AMPs against Staphylococcus aureus and Esche-richia coli as evaluation indexes, on the basis of protease screening, the extraction process of PTRM-AMPs was optimized, and the minimum inhibitory concentration of PTRM-AMPs was determined. Results: The optimum technological conditions for the preparation of PTRM-AMPs by alkaline protease hydrolysis were as follows: the enzymatic hydrolysis temperature was 39.5 ℃, the enzymatic hydrolysis time was 3.2 h, the pH value was 11.1, the solid-liquid ratio was …

Wheat variety performance tests are conducted each year in Arkansas by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences. The tests provide information to companies developing varieties and marketing seed within the state and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating variety recommendations for small-grain producers. The introduction of dicamba-tolerant (DT) soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L) in 2017 provided an additional tool for herbicide resistant weeds management. In the subsequent years, off-target movement of dicamba allegedly caused damage to sensitive crops and vegetation.

Possible causes of off-target movement include tank contamination, physical drift, and volatility. Additional products, such as herbicides to control grass, are often added to tank with dicamba, which is used to control broadleaf weeds, to increase the spectrum of control and application efficiency. A total of 6,600 acres of watermelons were planted in southern Indiana in 2021, making Indiana the sixth largest watermelon production state in the US, following Florida, Texas, Georgia, California, and North Carolina (USDA, 2022). Farmers select cultivars based on yield, disease resistance and fruit quality. This annual watermelon cultivar evaluation trial aims to provide watermelon producers and seed companies with information on the performances of different watermelon cultivars in southern Indiana.

High temperature stress at reproductive stages of cotton crop severely affects the yield and quality of cotton crop under changing climatic conditions. Peppermint, Mentha piperita L. belonging to the Lamiaceae family, contains a valuable essential oil known for its high menthol and menthone content. During the vegetation seasons of 2016 and 2017, field studies were conducted in Turkey?s Isparta climate by using randomized blocks to examine the yield and oil composition of the new peppermint cultivars. In these studies, Multimentha produced the highest herb yield even though the quality of its essential oil is relatively poor due to its low menthol content. CONTEXT: Producer-reported data can be used to identify suites of management practices that lead to higher yield and profit. However, a rigorous validation of the approach in relation to its potential impact on farmer yield and profit is lacking.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate a producer-data approach on its capability to guide on-farm evaluation of management practices with greatest potential for increasing producer yield and profit. We show proof of concept using soybean in the North Central US region as a case study.

A pickling cucumber variety trial was planted at the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center (43.399097, -83.694497, Frankenmuth, Michigan). Bejo (BJ), Nunhems (NU), Rijk Zwaan (RZ), and Sakata (SK) seed companies donated parthenocarpic (seedless) varieties for mechanical once-over harvest. The top five varieties each had Total Percent Recovery scores of 100%. When arranged in order of their highest combined clean yields of the most profitable fruit sizes (2B + 3A + 3B), they were NU 2106 (711 bu/a), NU 2105 (699 bu/a), RZ 16 (639 bu/a), RZ 11 (446 bu/a), and BJ Aristan (303 bu/a).

Indiana ranks sixth in cantaloupe production in the US. A total of 1,800 acres of cantaloupes were planted in Indiana with a production value of $8.6 million in 2018 (USDA 2021). Melon produced in Indiana is primarily eastern-type cantaloupes. Traditional eastern-type cantaloupes have less pronounced netting, larger fruit size, softer flesh and shorter shelf life compared with western-type cantaloupes. They are harvested at quarter-slip to full-slip stage, and require frequent harvest. Recently, extended shelf life varieties have been developed and are becoming attractive in the eastern market. Soil moisture deficiency is a major factor in determining crop yields in water-limited agricultural production regions. Evapotranspiration (ET), which consists of crop water use through transpiration and water loss through direct soil evaporation, is a good indicator of soil moisture availability and vegetation health. ET therefore has been an integral part of many yield estimation efforts. The Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) is an ET-based crop stress indicator that describes temporal anomalies in a normalized evapotranspiration metric as derived from satellite remote sensing. Re-integrating crop and livestock production through cover crop (CC) and corn residue grazing could efficiently utilize resources and ensure profitability while improving environmental quality, but how this integration affects soils and crops is not well understood. We conducted two studies to address this. In the first study, we evaluated the impact of cattle (1.3-3.7 head ha-1) grazing an oat (Avena sativa L.) Senescence can be influenced by the environment of a plant, such as, drought, heat, and nutrient stress. These environmental stressors can also influence canopy architecture. A total of 6,700 acres of watermelons were planted in Indiana in 2020 with a production value of $46.9 million (USDA 2021). Production in Indiana in 2020 was increased from 6,500 acres and $35.3 million production value in 2019. Primary watermelon type grown in Indiana is standard-sized triploid watermelons. Variety selection based on yield, disease resistance and fruit quality is a key decision in watermelon production. The objective of this study is to provide watermelon producers and seed companies with the updated information on the performance of watermelon varieties grown in Indiana.

Effects Of Using Low Tunnel And Grafted Plants For Watermelon Production Under Low Temperature Stress In Indiana, Wenjing Guan

This study evaluated the effect of using low tunnel and grafted plants for early-season watermelon production in Indiana. Results of the study indicated that grafted seedless watermelon plants can better tolerate cold stress in the early watermelon season compared to non-grafted seedless watermelon plants. Grafted plants with ‘Camelforce’ rootstock had better old tolerance than that of ‘Carolina Strong Back’ rootstock. The effect of using low tunnels to improve plant survival rate under extreme weather conditions is limited, which depend on temperate stress and cold tolerance of the plants.

Utilizing summer annual grass-legume forage mixtures has the potential to improve forage yield and nutritive characteristics, and/or animal performance during times when cool-season pasture growth is limited by high temperatures. Legumes can utilize atmospheric nitrogen, which can increase crude protein and forage digestibility in mixtures. As nitrogen application generally improves both the yield and nutritive characteristics of summer annual forages, but can have a negative effect on legume competitiveness, nitrogen fertilizer recommendations for legume-containing summer annual mixtures are not well established.

Cantaloupe And Specialty Melon Variety Evaluation In Indiana, Wenjing Guan, Dennis Nowaskie, Petrus Langenhoven, Daniel S. Egel

Thirty melon varieties including traditional eastern-type cantaloupe, non-slip muskmelon, honeydew, and other specialty type melons were evaluated in a field trial at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center (SWPAC) in Vincennes, IN in 2019. Yield and fruit quality attributes including fruit size, total soluble solids, firmness, etc., were recorded. This study identified promising melon cultivars for growing under Midwest open-field conditions.

Indiana ranks sixth in harvested watermelon acreage in the US. A total of 6,500 acres of watermelons were planted in Indiana in 2019 with a total production value of $35 million (USDA 2020). Variety selection based on yield, disease resistance and fruit quality are some of the key decisions in watermelon production. The objective of this study is to provide watermelon producers, as well as seed companies, with the updated information on the performance of watermelon varieties grown in Indiana. 2020 Cantaloupe Variety Evaluation In Southern Indiana, Wenjing Guan, Dan Egel, Dennis Nowaskie, Thomas D H Haseman

Indiana ranks sixth in cantaloupe production in the US. A total of 1,800 acres of cantaloupes were planted in Indiana with a production value of $8.6 million in 2018. Melon produced in Indiana is primarily eastern-type cantaloupes. Recently, extended shelf life varieties have been developed and are becoming attractive in the eastern market. This report compared the yield and quality of seven cantaloupe varieties grown in southern Indiana.
