Structure Of Employment In South Dakota's Manufacturing And Processing Sector, Thomas Dobbs, Sui Shan Au Yeung, Robert M. Dimit

Economics Research Reports

The descriptive research reported in this publication was part of a larger study carried out in South Dakota State University's Economics Department from 1978 through 1982 on rural industrial development in South Dakota. Factors influencing rural industrial development at the local level were reported in Goeken and Goeken and Dobbs. A Master of Science Research Paper in Sociology by Au Yeung drew and reported on some of the data contained in the present publication. The Sociology Research Paper also contained an examination of the effects of industrial development on local population changes in South Dakota.

Grass Tetany, Paul Q. Guyer, Alex Hogg, Gene White Aug 1984

Grass Tetany, Paul Q. Guyer, Alex Hogg, Gene White

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Grass tetany is a nutritional or metabolic disorder in cattle characterized by low blood magnesium, yet it is not just a simple magnesium deficiency. It is also called grass staggers, wheat pasture poisoning and hypomagnesemia. It primarily affects older cows nursing calves under 8 weeks of age, but may also occur in young or dry cows and growing calves. It happens most frequently when cattle are grazing lush, immature grass, but occasionally occurs when cattle are fed dry forages (winter tetany).

B792: The Development Of The Ability To Select For Increased Milk Production: The Jersey Dairy Cow In Maine, 1900-1984, John R. Paton, Barbara A. Barton Aug 1984

B792: The Development Of The Ability To Select For Increased Milk Production: The Jersey Dairy Cow In Maine, 1900-1984, John R. Paton, Barbara A. Barton

Bulletins

Histories of dairying and dairy farming usually pass over one very important topic, the point of origin herself: the dairy cow. In the past 150 years, the period associated with the rise of commercial dairying in the U.S., she has not been a static creature. The story of her development is an important and exciting part of the history of dairying, but this development cannot be explained by such phrases as "feeding and management improved" or "breeding improved " . Since the dairy cow of the 1980s is not the same dairy cow of the 1830s, we should understand how …

Public Officials' And New Members' Perceptions Of Impacts Of Selected Rural Water Systems, Ardelle Lundeen May 1984

Public Officials' And New Members' Perceptions Of Impacts Of Selected Rural Water Systems, Ardelle Lundeen

Economics Research Reports

Research was conducted by the Economics Department at SDSU in conjunction with the Water Resources Institute and the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development to determine perceptions of the extent of the impacts of rural water systems in selected regions of the state. Aspects of the re search were embodied in two studies. As part of a case study of the Brookings- Deuel Rural Water System (BDRWS), a random sample of area residents and public officials was personally interviewed. In another research project involving the Lincoln County Rural Water System (LCRWS) and the Randall Community Water District (RCWD), public …

Alfalfa Production As Related To Irrigation Scheduling: An Economic Perspective, Craig L. Israelsen May 1984

Alfalfa Production As Related To Irrigation Scheduling: An Economic Perspective, Craig L. Israelsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study analyzed the economics of irrigation scheduling for alfalfa hay in the Cache Valley, Utah area. Yield, evapotranspiration (ET) and irrigation drainage loss, along with the costs and returns per acre attributable to irrigation scheduling, were simulated through the use of a computerized plant growth model. The model created yearly "irrigation schedules" for alfalfa hay based on actual climatic, soil and plant characteristic data from the Utah State University Greenville Experiment Station. The model calculated the irrigation schedules based on a soil-water balance equation which never allowed the available soil water to go below the crop stress point.

The …

An Economic Analysis Of Food Policy In The Ivory Coast, Yao Prao Felix May 1984

An Economic Analysis Of Food Policy In The Ivory Coast, Yao Prao Felix

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ivory Coast covers an area of 124,000 square miles with reasonable rainfall for food crops production. But besides what has been called the economic "miracle," the country relies on increasing food imports (rice, wheat, meat, and milk products). At the same time, the country's earnings from the major export commodities are shrinking. So the primary objective was to identify the main causes and circumstances that have resulted in reductions in food production. The major hypothesis was that the present situation is simply the result of policies that have favored cash crops relative to good products. A formal treatment and an …
