The Consumptive Use Of Water In Milford Valley, Utah, Terrel R. Tovey
The Consumptive Use Of Water In Milford Valley, Utah, Terrel R. Tovey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Consumptive use, as used in this thesis, is defined as the sum of the volumes of water used by the vegetative growth of a given area in transpiration and building of plant tissue and that evaporated from adjacent soil, snow, or intercepted precipitation of the area in any specified time, divided by the given area. If the unit of time is small, the consumptive use is expressed in acre-inches per acre or depth in inches, whereas, if the unit of time is large, such as growing season or a 12-month period, the consumptive use is expressed as acre-feet per acre …

IRRIGATION AGRICULTURE has not received attention commensurate with its significance in either ancient or modem times. Although most ancient civilizations depended on irrigation for their very existence, one can consult volume after volume of history only to find irrigation scarcely mentioned. To the agricultural specialist the great challenge and the strength and weakness of irrigation agriculture is not in constructing Boulder Dams nor in planning winding canals and syphons to carry water from the Columbia River to California. The critical point is on the farms where water is applied to the soil and crops are harvested. There the real battles …
The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent
The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Commercial egg production in Utah has developed largely since 1920. Prior to that time most farms had some chickens but the eggs were either used at home or consumed on the local markets. What few commercial poultry farms there were also supplied local markets. It has been estimated that the total egg production in the stat was just about equal to the consumption within the state. Soon after1920 however, egg production on a commercial basis began and thereafter expanded rapidly for a time.
The Future Of Utah's Agriculture, W. Preston Thomas
The Future Of Utah's Agriculture, W. Preston Thomas
Faculty Honor Lectures
Since the settlement of the state Utah's agriculture has been based primarily on irrigated farming. The major part of farm income and the livelihood of farmers and farm families comes from this type of farming. Also, Utah's hopes for agricultural expansion and development, the adding of new wealth, and the providing of employment for Utah rural people, lie in a further development of irrigation and irrigated farming. Range livestock and dry farming, when measured by income and employment of labor have been, and are likely to remain, minor enterprises when compared to irrigated farming. In this discussion of Utah's agriculture …
How To Reseed Utah Range Lands, A. Perry Plummer, Richard M. Hurd, C. Kenneth Pearse
How To Reseed Utah Range Lands, A. Perry Plummer, Richard M. Hurd, C. Kenneth Pearse
Aspen Bibliography
Additional low cost forage is urgently needed by Utah's range livestock industry. Seeding of depleted tracts in accordance with recently developed methods and principles will help supply this forage and is entirely feasible. Where the value of the increased forage will repay the cost of planting, careful reseeding of selected sites is fully justified.
The important part that reseeding can play in restoring ranges to their former capacity has been demonstrated. Although satisfactory results can be obtained on many sites during average or better years, much more study is needed to insure consistent success in abnormal years and to extend …
An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson
An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Before presenting an economic analysis of farm tenure in the Uintah Basin, it will be helpful to consider some aspects of the historical, economic, and social background of that portion of the region included in this study.
A portion of the Uintah Indian Reservation, which was created in 1861, was opened to white settlement under the homestead and townsite laws on August 28, 1905 after 103,000 acres of farming land had been allotted to individual Indians living on the reservation and 276,000 acres reserved for Indian grazing lands and timber reserve.
Because of the large deposits of asphalt products that …

By reason of the topography of the land, Utah is and probably will remain a livestock grazing state. As far as agriculture is concerned over 90 percent of the area is suitable for grazing only. This grazing range is used by cattle and sheep.
