Agroecossistemas Orizícolas Irrigados: Insetos-Praga, Imimigos Naturais E Manejo Integrado, Leila Lucia Fritz, Elvis Arden Heinrichs, Marciele Pandolfo, Silvia Martins De Salles, Jaime Vargas De Oliveira, Lidia Mariana Fiuza

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Quantitative Trait Locus Mapping For Seed Mineral Concentrations In Two Arabidopsis Thaliana Recombinant Inbred Populations, Brian M. Waters, Michael A. Grusak Jan 2008

Quantitative Trait Locus Mapping For Seed Mineral Concentrations In Two Arabidopsis Thaliana Recombinant Inbred Populations, Brian M. Waters, Michael A. Grusak

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Biofortification of foods, achieved by increasing the concentrations of minerals such as iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), is a goal of plant scientists. Understanding genes that influence seed mineral concentration in a model plant such as Arabidopsis could help in the development of nutritionally enhanced crop cultivars. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping for seed concentrations of calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), Fe, potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), and Zn was performed using two recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, Columbia (Col) × Landsberg erecta (Ler) and Cape Verde Islands (Cvi) × Ler, grown …

Agricultural Systems: Agroecology And Rural Innovations For Development [Book Review], Charles A. Francis Jan 2008

Agricultural Systems: Agroecology And Rural Innovations For Development [Book Review], Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

To welcome yet another book on sustainable development, a reviewer must look for what is unique and what adds value to the volumes already published. In Agricultural Systems, editors Sieglinde Snapp and Barry Pound have assembled a collection of chapters that goes beyond the usual praise and criticism of the green revolution and the focus on economic development. Their book provides a first-hand story by people with lengthy experiences in the field, especially in Africa, who have developed and tested grassroots, participatory development approaches. The result is a valuable set of principles, strategies and case studies that paint a new …

NE89526 is an experimental line from the University of Nebraska with the pedigree ‘Lancota’ (CI 17389) selection/’Siouxland’ (PI 483469)//TX792729. 2076-W12-11 is an unreleased experimental line that originated from a population with an unidentified pedigree. Darrell was selected as an F3:4 line in 1998 …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The 2008 Guide for Weed Management in Nebraska is a valuable tool for anyone with responsibility for controlling weeds in crop, pasture, range, turf or aquatic environments in Nebraska. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive publication that will enable the user to make sound weed control decisions based on unbiased, research-based information, and to carry out weed control activities in a safe and responsible manner.

This publication deals principally with herbicides as an aid for crop production. The suggestions for use are based on research at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Research and Extension Centers and elsewhere.

Using Chemigation Safely And Effectively: Calibration Workbook Jan 2008

Using Chemigation Safely And Effectively: Calibration Workbook

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This booklet is designed to be used with the "Calibration" section of the Using Chemigation Safely and Effectively training DVD. The workbook examples correspond with the DVD presentation. During the presentation, you are encouraged to ask questions, and work through the calculations in this workbook and use it as a reference in the field.
Example calculations are included for applying insecticides, and fertilizers through center-pivots. However, they represent the simplest situations of calibrating a center-pivot irrigation system. To calibrate other irrigation system types such as, a corner system or a system with intermittent use of an end gun, requires additional …

Ballot Issues Education For The 2008 General Election - Initiative 424: Constitutional Amendment To Prohibit Discrimination Or Preferential Treatment, J. David Aiken, Bradley D. Lubben Jan 2008

Ballot Issues Education For The 2008 General Election - Initiative 424: Constitutional Amendment To Prohibit Discrimination Or Preferential Treatment, J. David Aiken, Bradley D. Lubben

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

On November 4, 2008, Nebraska voters will consider an amendment to the state constitution to ban many state or local government affirmative action programs (unless pending court challenges nullify the vote). The proposed constitutional amendment was brought forth by petition initiative and is modeled after similar language approved by voters in California (1996), Washington (1998), and Michigan (2006). Voters in Colorado will also face the same question this year on election day while similar efforts in Arizona, Missouri, and Oklahoma failed to reach the ballot.

Whole-Plant Mineral Partitioning Throughout The Life Cycle In Arabidopsis Thaliana Ecotypes Columbia, Landsberg Erecta, Cape Verde Islands, And The Mutant Line Ysl1ysl3, Brian M. Waters, Michael A. Grusak Jan 2008

Whole-Plant Mineral Partitioning Throughout The Life Cycle In Arabidopsis Thaliana Ecotypes Columbia, Landsberg Erecta, Cape Verde Islands, And The Mutant Line Ysl1ysl3, Brian M. Waters, Michael A. Grusak

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Minimal information exists on whole-plant dynamics of mineral flow through Arabidopsis thaliana or on the source tissues responsible for mineral export to developing seeds. Understanding these phenomena in a model plant could help in the development of nutritionally enhanced crop cultivars. A whole-plant partitioning study, using sequential harvests, was conducted to characterize growth and mineral concentrations and contents of rosettes, cauline leaves, stems, immature fruit, mature fruit hulls, and seeds of three WT lines (Col-0, Ler, and Cvi) and one mutant line (Col-0::ysl1ysl3). Shoot mineral content increased throughout the life cycle for all minerals, although tissue-specific …

Native Perennial Grasses In Highway Medians: Pre- And Postplant Techniques For Establishment In A Mediterranean Climate, Stephen L. Young, Victor P. Claassen Jan 2008

Native Perennial Grasses In Highway Medians: Pre- And Postplant Techniques For Establishment In A Mediterranean Climate, Stephen L. Young, Victor P. Claassen

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Within highway rights-of-way, native perennial grasses provide desirable services to support natural and human constructed ecosystems. However, native perennial grass establishment in annual grass dominated roadsides of semiarid and Mediterranean climates of the western United States requires specific cultural and chemical management treatments to control weeds. In 2004, field studies were conducted in Sacramento Valley, California to determine the effect of herbicide, disc cultivation, and species selection on native perennial grass establishment and annual weed persistence. Perennial grass species mixes common to drier and wetter upland areas in northern California were drill seeded at two sites (I-5 North and I-5 …
